Le Grand Mix accueille en ce 10 mars une belle soirée de rock! En effet, SPRINTS devaient jouer en format Club mais l’intérêt du public pour garage punk du groupe de Dublin a incité l’équipe a proposer le concert en grande salle et autant vous dire que c’était une excellente idée! Pour les accompagner, les irlandais ont choisi le groupe Néerlandais Marathon, qui avait déjà fait le bonheur du public lillois il y a quelques années à l’Aéronef. Une soirée que l’on attendait de pied ferme et qu’on vous raconte avec grand plaisir!

C’est dans une salle déjà bien remplie que Marathon montent sur scène prêts à nous faire découvrir leur son post punk boosté à la shoegaze et au grunge. Et autant vous dire que pour nous qui les découvrons ce soir c’est un véritable coup de coeur. La voix de Kay Koopmans nous envoute rapidement, tout comme son jeu de guitare. « How Does It Feel » montre tout le talent du groupe d’Amsterdam et nous laisse avec la furieuse envie d’en découvrir plus. Le duo rythmique mené par Leenart van Hulst à la batterie et Nina Lijzenga à la basse fait remuer le public sans effort et nous montre à quel point le son du groupe est taillé pour la scène. Sofie Ooteman et Victor Dijkstra complètent le line up avec leurs guitares et des claviers pour ce qui est de Sofie, pour un son toujours plus enveloppant. L’ensemble comble le public et nous avec et chaque nouveau morceau joué nous montre à quel point la formation a déjà des titres percutants à nous proposer, et sait faire passer les émotions. On se délecte de chaque note et de chaque ambiance installée par le combo. Le groupe semble d’ailleurs ravi de retrouver le public du Nord et nous remercie pour l’accueil chaleureux à plusieurs reprises. La fin du set nous confirme notre amour pour le groupe et les applaudissements dans la fosse du Grand Mix montrent que nous ne sommes pas les seuls à avoir trouvé là un nouveau groupe à suivre de près. Marathon quittent la scène après un dernier titre électrisant et nous promettent de revenir rapidement dans le coin. Un début de soirée comme on les adore et un groupe qu’on quitte avec la furieuse envie de les revoir et de se plonger dans leur discographie.
Après un changement de plateau rapide, c’est au tour de SPRINTS de monter sur la scène du Grand Mix, pour ce qui est la première date de leur tournée européenne. Le groupe démarre en trombes avec « Something’s Gonna Happen », morceau tiré du dernier album en date, All That Is Over. L’évidence nous frappe en quelques instants, Karla Chubb excelle aussi bien au chant qu’à la guitare et sait se mettre un public dans la poche en quelques instants. Leur son garage punk fait remuer la fosse rapidement et des titres comme « Descartes » ou « Beg » mettent tout le monde d’accord. Zac Stephenson nous envoie également ses meilleurs riffs, comme sur « Shadow Of A Doubt », morceau tiré de leur album Letter To Self sorti en 2024. Les fans du groupe sont aux anges et le public qui est venu les découvrir ce soir en prend plein la vue! Impossible de rester de marbre face à cette décharge d’énergie punk proposée par le groupe de Dublin. L’accueil du public semble d’ailleurs ravir Karla et sa bande, puisque elle n’hésitera pas à remercier le Nord pour son accueil toujours chaleureux. Côté rythmique, Jack Callan à la batterie et une amie du groupe, qui remplace Sam McCann absent de la tournée, à la basse apportent toujours plus d’énergie et renforcent l’envie de la fosse de pogoter. Karla n’hésitera pas à lâcher sa guitare pendant le set pour venir chanter au plus près du public et même s’offrir un bain de foule et un tour en hauteur portée par un public enthousiaste à souhait. « Coming Alive », « Heavy » ou encore « Cathedral » confirment à quel point ce concert était un immanquable du mois de mars et aussi que la formation irlandaise sait offrir un set de rock d’anthologie. L’ambiance est toujours au beau fixe et « Up And Corner » ne fait que le confirmer. Après avoir offert une reprise de « Deceptacon » de Le Tigre, SPRINTS nous proposent « Desire » et « Little Fix » pour clôturer cette belle soirée. Encore une fois c’est une déferlante punk qui passe dans la fosse du Grand Mix et laisse le public en joie face à un groupe qui a excellé de bout en bout, une chanteuse et guitariste absolument impériale et des musicien.ne.s au sommet de leur art. On quitte la salle ravis et prêts à remettre ça au plus vite. Quel plaisir de voir que le rock est encore bien vivant et que des groupes rameutent les foules dans les fosses d’Europe et du monde! On ne pouvait rêver plus belle soirée!

Le Grand Mix is hosting a fantastic evening of rock on 10 March! SPRINTS were originally due to play a club gig, but the public’s enthusiasm for the Dublin band’s garage punk sound prompted the organisers to move the concert to the main venue – and let’s just say it was an excellent idea! To accompany them, the Irish band chose the Dutch group Marathon, who had already delighted the Lille crowd a few years ago at L’Aéronef. It was an evening we’d been eagerly awaiting, and we’re delighted to tell you all about it!

It was to a packed venue that Marathon took to the stage, ready to introduce us to their post-punk sound, infused with shoegaze and grunge. And let me tell you, for those of us discovering them tonight, it was love at first listen. Kay Koopmans’ voice quickly captivates us, as does his guitar playing. “How Does It Feel” showcases the Amsterdam band’s talent and leaves us desperate to hear more. The rhythm section, led by Leenart van Hulst on drums and Nina Lijzenga on bass, effortlessly gets the crowd moving and demonstrates just how well the band’s sound is suited to the stage. Sofie Ooteman and Victor Dijkstra complete the line-up with their guitars and, in Sofie’s case, keyboards, creating an ever more immersive sound. The whole band delights the audience and us alike, and with every new track played, they demonstrate just how many powerful songs they already have to offer, and how well they convey emotion. We revel in every note and every atmosphere created by the band. The band also seem delighted to be back with their North of France fans and thank us repeatedly for the warm welcome. The end of the set reaffirms our love for the band, and the applause from the crowd at Le Grand Mix shows that we’re not the only ones who’ve discovered a new band to keep a close eye on. Marathon leave the stage after one last electrifying track and promise to return to the area soon. It’s the sort of start to the evening we love, and we leave with a burning desire to see them again and delve into their discography.
After a quick stage change, it’s SPRINTS’ turn to take to the stage at the Grand Mix for the first date of their European tour. The band kicks off with a bang with “Something’s Gonna Happen”, a track from their latest album, All That Is Over. It becomes clear within moments that Karla Chubb excels both on vocals and guitar and knows how to win over an audience in no time. Their garage punk sound gets the pit moving quickly, and tracks like “Descartes” and “Beg” have everyone on the same page. The band’s fans are in heaven, and the crowd who’ve come to discover them tonight are in for a real treat! It’s impossible to remain unmoved by this burst of punk energy from the Dublin band. The crowd’s reception seems to delight Karla and her band, as she doesn’t hesitate to thank the North for its ever-warm welcome. On the rhythm side, Jack Callan on drums and a friend of the band—standing in for Sam McCann, who is absent from the tour—on bass bring even more energy and fuel the crowd’s desire to mosh. Karla didn’t hesitate to put down her guitar during the set to come and sing right up close to the audience, even going so far as to take a dip in the crowd and be lifted high into the air by an incredibly enthusiastic crowd. “Coming Alive”, “Heavy” and “Cathedral” confirm just how much of a must-see this concert was in March, and also that the Irish band knows how to deliver a rock set for the ages. The atmosphere remains electric, and “Up And Corner” only serves to confirm it. After treating us to a cover of Le Tigre’s “Deceptacon”, SPRINTS treat us to “Desire” and “Little Fix” to round off this wonderful evening. Once again, a wave of punk sweeps through the pit at the Grand Mix, leaving the audience in raptures before a band that excelled from start to finish, an absolutely commanding singer and guitarist, and musicians at the peak of their art. We leave the venue delighted and ready to do it all over again as soon as possible. What a pleasure to see that rock is still very much alive and that bands are drawing crowds to venues across Europe and the world! We couldn’t have asked for a better evening!
