Les trois premiers titres, signés Legbiter, ouvrent le split avec un sens de l’impact qui ne fait pas dans la dentelle. Avec “Worms”, le trio annonce immédiatement la couleur : c’est frontal et massif mais porté par un refrain étonnamment doux qui contraste avec la rudesse des couplets. Cette alternance donne une respiration bienvenue dans une tracklist qui n’a, par ailleurs, aucune intention de lever le pied. Sur “Speedball”, le chant se balade plutôt dans les contrées shoegaze, un voile presque onirique qui entre en confrontation avec une section instrumentale beaucoup plus brutale et percutante. Le morceau trouve ainsi son identité dans ce tiraillement permanent entre douceur et chaos. Puis vient “Major Motion”, le plus shoegazy des trois, où les riffs s’enchaînent sans jamais perdre cette trame noisy qui définit profondément le groupe. Une montée en densité qui laisse place à une seconde moitié de split plus lourde, plus rampante.

Avec Norna, on bascule dans un univers plus massif, plus incantatoire. “Lithany” ouvre leur triptyque avec un chant nettement plus crié et viscéral, tandis que les riffs s’étirent pour installer un climat doom poisseux au sein d’un squelette de post-metal pur jus. Le résultat est pesant, limite obsédant comme une prière murmurée au bord du gouffre. “Eyes of God” joue sur la superposition : ici, on a l’impression de percevoir vingt textures musicales empilées qui s’amalgament pour créer une pression sonore montant lentement mais sûrement. Le groupe travaille l’épaisseur plus que l’agressivité. Enfin, “Serpents of Gold” clôt la sortie avec un long morceau ample habité par une basse lourde qui semble nous faire basculer dans une introspection sombre. On y retrouve un lien direct avec leur album éponyme : même manière d’explorer les zones psychologiques les plus enfouies, de transformer la lourdeur en immersion totale.

Ce split EP révèle deux façons d’aborder l’intensité musicale : Legbiter, dans l’attaque frontale et l’énergie noisy ; Norna, dans la densité lente et la tension interne. Les deux groupes se distinguent clairement, notamment dans leurs approches vocales radicalement opposées, mais une continuité se dessine entre eux dans leur manière d’aller droit au bout et frapper fort. Le résultat de ce split est cohérent, malgré la surprise de réunir ces deux formations. On aime beaucoup et on vous le recommande.

In late August 2024, Norna released their self-titled album, which we highly recommended. On 20 March 2026, they’re back, still on Pelagic Records, but this time with a split EP alongside their Swedish counterparts: Legbiter. Whilst the former navigate the realm of post-metal with strong doom roots, the latter operate in a noisy and abrasive post-hardcore style. An unexpected pairing on paper, but one that promises an intense dialogue between two aesthetics that are nevertheless closely aligned in their explosive instinct.

The first three tracks, by Legbiter, open the split with a no-nonsense sense of impact. With “Worms”, the trio immediately sets the tone: it’s direct and massive, yet carried by a surprisingly gentle chorus that contrasts with the harshness of the verses. This contrast provides a welcome breather in a tracklist that, incidentally, has no intention of letting up. On “Speedball”, the vocals wander into shoegaze territory, an almost dreamlike veil that clashes with a much more brutal and punchy instrumental section. The track thus finds its identity in this constant tug-of-war between gentleness and chaos. Then comes “Major Motion”, the most shoegaze-influenced of the three, where the riffs follow one another without ever losing that noisy texture that so deeply defines the band. A build-up in intensity that gives way to a heavier, more creeping second half of the split.

With Norna, we’re plunged into a more massive, more incantatory world. “Lithany” opens their triptych with vocals that are distinctly more screamed and visceral, whilst the riffs stretch out to create a thick, doom-laden atmosphere within a framework of pure post-metal. The result is heavy, almost haunting, like a prayer whispered on the edge of the abyss. “Eyes of God” plays on layering: here, one feels as though one can perceive twenty stacked musical textures that blend together to create a sonic pressure building slowly but surely. The band focuses on depth rather than aggression. Finally, “Serpents of Gold” closes the release with a long, expansive track driven by a heavy bassline that seems to plunge us into a dark introspection. There is a direct link here to their eponymous album: the same way of exploring the deepest psychological recesses, of transforming heaviness into total immersion.

This split EP reveals two approaches to musical intensity: Legbiter, with their head-on assault and noisy energy; Norna, with their slow density and internal tension. The two bands are clearly distinct, particularly in their radically opposed vocal styles, yet a continuity emerges between them in their determination to go all the way and hit hard. The result of this split is cohesive, despite the surprise of bringing these two bands together. We really like it and highly recommend it.
