C’est sûrement une des sorties metal les plus attendues de ce début d’année par les adeptes de la formation post black metal Gaerea. Les portugais reviennent avec Loss, disponible dès le 20 mars via Century Media, dont les singles nous ont déjà annoncé une évolution dans les sonorités. On découvre tout ça juste ici !

Gaerea avait annoncé de longue date que leur ambition n’était pas de rester cantonné à du black ou post black éternellement. Et dès les premières secondes de Loss, on en a la preuve avec “Luminary”. Le métal moderne vient nous frapper avec force. Pour autant on retrouve toujours ce qui fait la recette de la formation : les émotions puissantes. Venant des tripes, on sent dans la voix comme dans les mélodies ces émois à la fois éprouvants et percutants, bruts et tellement complexes. D’ailleurs “Submerged” porte particulièrement bien son nom. On sent un tsunami musical et émotionnel nous envahir et tout balayer sur son passage. Les parties d’un seul coup très douces accentuent cet effet. Le morceau est d’une beauté sans pareil, et on y retrouve toute l’âme de Gaerea. “Hellbound” continue à nous emmener toujours plus loin sur le chemin de l’art brut. Car oui, on parle bien de ça dans l’ADN de Loss. Les rythmes et la voix puissante sont en grande partie responsables de cette impression. Et en même temps, les riffs de guitare, les mélodies au clavier…viennent donner un aspect de travail d’orfèvre à l’ensemble. On retrouve dans les titres de cet opus des sonorités qui peuvent évoquer Orbit Culture avec qui Gaerea a partagé la scène, notamment à Lille en novembre dernier. On peut citer ainsi “Uncontrolled” mais aussi d’autres petits instants tout au long de l’album. Le son de batterie se fait également un peu différent par moments, toujours dans cette veine de métal moderne, comme par exemple dans “Cyclone”. “LBRNTH” nous propose une sorte d’interlude, dans un moment de douceur mélancolique, qui nous amène parfaitement à “Nomad” avec une voix plus lyrique. Ce dernier titre cité est à mon sens le plus bouleversant de Loss. Les blasts sur fond de riffs ultra mélodiques créent une atmosphère puissante et particulièrement accrochante, renvoyant à des sensations très profondes. Niveau longueur, on retrouve un équilibre dans les titres, en dehors de “Stardust” qui clôt l’album. Celui-ci démarre par un son qui nous évoque fortement Sleep Token. Ce morceau, et donc l’opus, se terminent sur une note douce, comme trois points de suspension mis en musique.
Avec Loss, Gaerea va piocher dans différents styles de metal. On peut y entendre des références à divers groupes actuels que l’on vous laissera trouver au gré de votre sensibilité. La formation portugaise ouvre ici un nouveau chapitre de son histoire, tout en restant bien dans la continuité d’un même ouvrage. On a peu de doute sur le fait que son public, assez large, s’y retrouve également. On vous raconte d’ailleurs très vite la release party du 20 mars au Botanique de Bruxelles !

This is surely one of the most eagerly awaited metal releases of the year so far for fans of the post-black metal band Gaerea. The Portuguese band are back with Loss, out on March 20th via Century Media, with singles that have already hinted at an evolution in their sound. We’ll be taking a closer look right here!

Gaerea had long made it clear that their ambition was not to remain confined to black metal or post-black metal forever. And from the very first seconds of *Loss*, we have proof of this with “Luminary”. Modern metal hits us with full force. Yet we still find what makes the band’s sound so distinctive: powerful emotions. Coming from the gut, we feel in both the vocals and the melodies these emotions that are at once harrowing and striking, raw and so complex. Indeed, “Submerged” is particularly aptly named. You feel a musical and emotional tsunami engulfing you and sweeping everything away in its path. The suddenly very gentle passages accentuate this effect. The track is of unparalleled beauty, and you can hear the very soul of Gaerea in it. “Hellbound” continues to take us ever further down the path of art brut. For yes, that is indeed what lies at the heart of Loss’s DNA. The rhythms and the powerful vocals are largely responsible for this impression. And at the same time, the guitar riffs and keyboard melodies… lend the whole a sense of masterful craftsmanship. The tracks on this album feature sounds that may evoke Orbit Culture, with whom Gaerea shared the stage, notably in Lille last November. Examples include “Uncontrolled”, as well as other brief moments throughout the album. The drum sound also varies slightly at times, always staying true to that modern metal style, as in “Cyclone”, for instance. “LBRNTH” offers a sort of interlude, a moment of gentle melancholy, which leads perfectly into “Nomad” with its more lyrical vocals. This last track is, in my view, the most moving on Loss. The blast beats against a backdrop of ultra-melodic riffs create a powerful and particularly gripping atmosphere, evoking very deep emotions. In terms of length, there is a balance between the tracks, apart from “Stardust”, which closes the album. This track begins with a sound that strongly evokes Sleep Token. This track, and thus the album, ends on a gentle note, like an ellipsis set to music.
With Loss, Gaerea draws on various metal styles. You can hear references to various contemporary bands, which we’ll leave you to discover according to your own taste. The Portuguese band opens a new chapter in its history here, whilst remaining firmly within the continuity of a single body of work. There’s little doubt that its fairly broad audience will find something to enjoy here too.
