Retour au Black Lab pour la première venue à Lille des anglais de High Parasite. Le groupe de Aaron Stainthorpe (ex-My Dying Bride) vient nous présenter son album Forever We Burn, sorti en 2024 et on ne pouvait décemment pas manquer ça. Pour les accompagner c’est The Old Dead Tree qui ont été choisis pour démarrer cette soirée, et vu le souvenir vivace de leur concert au même endroit il y a presque un an jour pour jour on attendait ça de pied ferme! Une bien belle soirée proposée par A Gauche De La Lune.

Lorsque The Old Dead Tree montent sur scène on est déçus pour eux du peu de monde présent dans la salle de Wasquehal. Avec un plateau de cette qualité on s’attendait à une salle bien plus remplie, mais les parisiens ne se démontent pas et entendent bien nous présenter une performance inoubliable. Le set s’ouvre sur « Even If », morceau tiré de The Perpetual Motion et d’entrée on se prend en pleine face la qualité du son de la formation. La voix de Manuel Munoz est impeccable et son alternance impressionnante entre chant clair cristallin et chant hurlé surpuissant nous en met plein la vue. La formation parisienne a décidé ce soir de proposer un set mettant en lumière toute sa discographie. Et nous voilà rapidement plongés dans des titres de l’album Second Thoughts, dernier album en date de la formation, avec en particulier les riffs magistraux de Nicolas Chevrollier et Nicolas Cornolo sur « Without a Second Thought ». La puissance de la musique de The Old Dead Tree nous prend aux tripes pour ne plus nous lâcher du reste du set. C’est au tour de l’inédit, issu des sessions à Abbey Road, « Feel Alive Again » de nous montrer que chaque année qui passe ne fait que renforcer la qualité des compositions du groupe parisien. La section rythmique est également diablement en forme avec Gilles Moinet à la basse et Raphaël Antheaume à la batterie. Ces derniers nous gratifient de toute leur versatilité assez prog finalement sur des titres comme « Unrelenting » ou encore « We Cry As One », morceau issu de leur tout premier album sorti en 2003! Les fans sont aux anges et les amateurs d’un métal puissant sont également ravis par la performance devant nos yeux. Ce soir c’est tête d’affiche commune et nous avons donc le droit à une heure de set, et on ne boude clairement pas notre plaisir. « It Can’t Be! » et « How Could You » nous confirment une fois de plus l’immense talent qui parcoure la formation. Et après nous avoir remercié pour notre présence Manuel et sa bande se lancent dans les deux derniers titres de la soirée à savoir « Out Of Breath » et le magistral « The Lightest Straw » qui vienne clôturer cette performance en beauté. Une fois de plus The Old Dead Tree ont montré au public qu’ils ont des titres absolument imparables et une force de frappe émotionnelle très forte. On ne saurait que vous conseiller de vous replonger au plus vite dans leur discographie. Et de notre côté on espère que leur prochain passage dans le coin sera tout aussi envoutant!
C’est au tout de High Parasite de monter sur scène et autant vous dire que la foule s’est resserrée devant la scène pour ne rien manquer de ce set qui n’annonce déjà comme un immanquable de ce mois de mars. Le groupe débarque sur scène et Aaron Stainthorpe nous subjugue déjà avec son costume et son gant blanc ainsi que son maquillage qui ne prend que la moitié de son visage. N’ayant qu’un album à son actif pour le moment le groupe anglais nous le proposera en intégralité ce soir, mais dans un ordre différent de celui du disque, puisque c’est « Parasite » qui ouvre ce concert. Dès les premières notes on sent que la nouvelle formation venue de Batley en Angleterre a déjà de belles choses à nous proposer. Leur métal gothique est passionnant et évidemment porté par la puissance vocale indéniable d’Aaron. Sur « Concentric Nightmares » ou le nouveau single « Drag Me Under », qui annonce l’album à venir, on prend en pleine face les lignes de basse puissantes de Tombs, masqué et également maquillé, et les frappes enlevées de Dan Brown derrière les fûts. On sait en quelques titres que High Parasite a de quoi combler le public tant chaque morceau révèle toute la maestria de la jeune formation. En bon Anglais, Aaron n’hésite pas à placer quelques moments d’esprit entre les morceaux pour des moments de belle complicité avec le public. Les riffs de Jonny Hunter et Sam Hill sur « My Syndrome » ou « Widowmaker » nous enchantent et nous laissent avec l’envie de remuer dans la fosse. En guise de surprise le groupe nous offre ensuite une reprise étonnante de « Push It! » de Garbage. La version bien plus teinté métal que l’originale vient laisser à Aaron une occasion supplémentaire de nous livrer toute sa versatilité vocale. Le concert file à une vitesse folle et le public applaudit largement la formation, qui ne laisse rien au hasard avec tubes en puissance comme « We Break We Die » ou « Hate Springs Eternal ». La soirée touche bientôt à sa fin et le chanteur annonce qu’il n’y aura pas de rappel, avec toujours cette touche d’humour typiquement britannique. C’est donc « Forever We Burn » qui vient clore cette soirée avec une performance toujours plus enthousiasmante de chaque personne présente sur scène. Une fois les remerciements faits au public le groupe donne rendez-vous à ces fans à la table de merch pour y échanger plus longuement. Cette première soirée en compagnie de High Parasite fut un pur plaisir pour les oreilles et on imagine aisément qu’avec un deuxième album bientôt sous le bras, le groupe anglais n’aura aucun mal à convaincre un public toujours plus large. On quitte la salle ravis par cette soirée et prêt à remettre ça dès que possible.

Back at the Black Lab for the first-ever Lille appearance by the English band High Parasite. Aaron Stainthorpe’s band (formerly of My Dying Bride) are here to present their album *Forever We Burn*, released in 2024, and we simply couldn’t miss it. Supporting them, The Old Dead Tree were chosen to kick off the evening, and given the vivid memory of their gig at the same venue almost exactly a year ago to the day, we were eagerly awaiting it! A truly wonderful evening organised by A Gauche De La Lune.

When The Old Dead Tree take to the stage, we feel sorry for them seeing how few people are in the venue in Wasquehal. With a line-up of this calibre, we’d expected a much fuller house, but the Parisians don’t let it get to them and are determined to give us an unforgettable performance. The set opens with “Even If”, a track from The Perpetual Motion, and right from the start we’re hit by the band’s superb sound quality. Manuel Munoz’s vocals are impeccable, and his impressive alternation between crystal-clear clean singing and powerful screaming leaves us thoroughly impressed. Tonight, the Parisian band has decided to deliver a set showcasing their entire discography. And we’re quickly immersed in tracks from Second Thoughts, the band’s latest album, particularly the masterful riffs of Nicolas Chevrollier and Nicolas Cornolo on “Without a Second Thought”. The power of The Old Dead Tree’s music grabs us by the gut and doesn’t let go for the rest of the set. It’s the turn of the previously unreleased track, from the Abbey Road sessions, “Feel Alive Again”, to show us that with every passing year, the quality of the Parisian band’s compositions only grows stronger. The rhythm section is also in brilliant form, with Gilles Moinet on bass and Raphaël Antheaume on drums. They treat us to their full range of versatility – which is actually quite prog-inspired – on tracks like ‘Unrelenting’ and ‘We Cry As One’, a song from their very first album released in 2003! The fans are in heaven and lovers of heavy metal are equally delighted by the performance unfolding before our eyes. Tonight they’re co-headlining, so we’re treated to an hour-long set, and we’re certainly not holding back our enjoyment. ‘It Can’t Be!’ and ‘How Could You’ confirm once again the immense talent that runs through the band. And after thanking us for coming, Manuel and his band launch into the finaDead Tree have shown the audience that they have absolutely unstoppable tracks and a very powerful emotional impact. We can only advise you to dive l two tracks of the evening: ‘Out Of Breath’ and the masterful ‘The Lightest Straw’, which brings this performance to a stunning close. Once again, The Old back into their discography as soon as possible. And for our part, we hope that their next visit to the area will be just as spellbinding!
It’s High Parasite’s turn to take to the stage, and needless to say, the crowd has packed in front of the stage so as not to miss a moment of this set, which is already shaping up to be a must-see this March. The band takes to the stage and Aaron Stainthorpe already captivates us with his costume and white glove, as well as his make-up, which covers only half his face. With just one album to their name so far, the English band will be playing it in its entirety tonight, though in a different order to the record, as it is “Parasite” that opens the concert. From the very first notes, it’s clear that this new band from Batley in England already has some great things to offer. Their gothic metal is thrilling and, of course, driven by Aaron’s undeniable vocal power. On “Concentric Nightmares” or the new single “Drag Me Under”, which heralds the upcoming album, we’re hit head-on by the powerful bass lines of Tombs, masked and also made-up, and the spirited drumming of Dan Brown behind the kit. Within a few tracks, it’s clear that High Parasite has what it takes to satisfy the audience, as each song reveals the full mastery of this young band. In true English style, Aaron doesn’t hesitate to throw in a few witty remarks between tracks, creating moments of great rapport with the audience. Jonny Hunter and Sam Hill’s riffs on “My Syndrome” and “Widowmaker” have us spellbound and leave us itching to get down in the mosh pit. As a surprise, the band then treats us to a stunning cover of Garbage’s “Push It!”. This version, with a much heavier metal edge than the original, gives Aaron another chance to showcase his vocal versatility. The concert flies by at breakneck speed and the crowd applauds the band enthusiastically, who leave nothing to chance with potential hits like “We Break We Die” or “Hate Springs Eternal”. The evening is drawing to a close and the singer announces that there will be no encore, with that typically British touch of humour. It is therefore “Forever We Burn” that brings the evening to a close, with an ever-more-enthusiastic performance from everyone on stage. Once they’ve thanked the audience, the band invites their fans to the merch table for a longer chat. This first evening with High Parasite was a pure delight for the ears, and it’s easy to imagine that with a second album soon to be released, the English band will have no trouble winning over an ever-growing audience. We leave the venue delighted by the evening and ready to do it all again as soon as possible.
