Alors que nous vous parlions de Loss, le nouvel album de Gaerea, la formation organisait sa release party au Botanique de Bruxelles. Quelques heures seulement après la sortie de l’opus, l’occasion était trop belle de découvrir ces nouveaux titres en live ! Direction donc Bruxelles le 20 mars dernier, pour une double dose de Gaerea.

Nous ne sommes pas les seuls à être impatients puisque plus de la moitié de la salle est déjà présente dans le couloir avant l’ouverture des portes. Une épaisse fumée est présente dans l’Orangerie, salle du Botanique dans laquelle se produit Gaerea. Nous ne voyons donc rien de la scène, et le suspens est total sur ce qui nous attend. A 19h30 pile, la salle est plongée dans le noir, et “LBRNTH” résonne. Ce titre n’est ni plus ni moins que l’introduction de “Nomad” sur l’album. La batterie jouée en live apporte une profondeur incroyable à ce moment. Puis c’est bien “Nomad” qui démarre. Presque heureusement, le son met quelques minutes à se caler totalement, nous permettant de ne pas faire un harakiri collectif face à ce titre beau, puissant et dévastateur. Le backdrop est aux couleurs de Loss, et on comprend vite pourquoi. En effet, sur cette première partie de set, le groupe va nous jouer l’intégralité de l’opus ! Il ne sera pas dans l’ordre et cela fait sens lors de ce live. L’ordre des titres sur album fonctionne très bien, mais la formation l’a repensé ici pour monter plus crescendo. Ce n’est pas un scoop, Gaerea a opéré un virage avec Loss. Le live se fait ici plus incisif qu’auparavant, invitant davantage le public à participer. Alpha (chant) appelle ainsi à la formation de circle pit, de wall of death… L’ambiance démarre d’ailleurs rapidement avec “Phoenix”. On retrouve ce qui fait l’ADN des live de Gaerea avec les mouvements très chorégraphiés et gracieux de Alpha. La salle est pleine à craquer et on acclame le groupe jusqu’au fond. “Submerged” démarre avec une voix grave, profonde, semblant venir d’outre tombe, et accompagnée uniquement d’une douce guitare. Puis le son massif vient nous submerger et déchainer le pit. Gaerea chante et joue ici quelque chose qui se situe bien au delà des mots, une force archaïque et viscérale qui nous parle à tous. Delta (guitare) appose des chœurs hauts perchés, dans une forme presque lyrique. L’introduction de “Luminary” est également repensée pour le live. Et la puissance de ce titre prend toute son ampleur en live. C’est clairement la révélation de cet album une fois jouée sur scène. Une sorte de battle de guitare entre Delta et Bêta précède le début de “Uncontrolled”. Les lights suivent le rythme des cymbales très présentes. Vient ensuite “Cyclone”, qui démarre doucement, avec de longs passages instrumentaux et mélodiques, avant de venir nous percuter par un instant de pur black métal. Le public est réactif à chaque titre, et l’ambiance ne faiblit à aucun moment. “Hellbound” vient une dernière fois déchainer totalement le pit, notamment par les blasts puissants de Xi. Les musiciens quittent ainsi la scène, avant que Alpha ne revienne nous introduire “Stardust”. Avec ce titre, qui clôt l’album comme cette partie du concert, le groupe a fait le paris d’un titre très différent, aux sonorités de Sleep Token indéniables. Pour interpréter ce morceau dans lequel la formation assume totalement la direction différente, chacun arbore une cagoule, comme toujours, mais cette fois-ci à paillettes ! “Stardust” fait appel à de nombreux samples de piano / clavier, et à l’écoute de ce titre, on se dit que l’évolution pourrait être la présence d’un clavier sur scène… A suivre ! 

Alors que la formation quitte la scène, un écran descend pour nous présenter METAMORPHOSIS – Shaping the Unknown, documentaire sur la vie, la création et l’évolution du groupe. Annoncé comme durant environ 30 minutes, il en dure plutôt 15. La reprise du concert en surprend alors plus d’un !

La salle se remplit donc à nouveau rapidement de toutes les personnes parties faire une pause durant le documentaire. La soirée s’enchaîne en non stop. Ici on retrouve des titres plus anciens de Gaerea, ravissant ainsi les anciens autant que les nouveaux fans. Coma, avant dernier opus de la formation, est particulièrement représenté. On retrouve ainsi le fantastique “World Ablaze” qui fonctionne toujours aussi bien. On retourne même dans la période très post black de Mirage avec l’emblématique “Laude”. Les wall of death et autres joyeusetés du pit sont toujours présents. On renoue ici avec les racines de la formation, et on se souvient à quel point on adore toutes leurs périodes. Le groupe ne se cantonne pas à un style, mais le fait avec sincérité et cela se ressent comme fil rouge dans toutes leurs compositions. Alpha demande à la salle d’allumer les flashs des téléphones sur l’introduction légère de “Wilted Flower”. On termine ainsi cette soirée exceptionnelle en communion avec Gaerea. 

Gaerea nous a ici offert un moment incroyable. On ne pouvait rêver meilleure release party qu’une soirée 100% dédiée au groupe. On ne peut que vous conseiller d’aller écouter Loss si ce n’est pas déjà fait, et de foncer les voir sur scène dès que possible. Gaerea est un orfèvre de la musique. Tout est extrêmement travaillé, des compositions, à la scénographie en passant par les visuels ou le son. Sûrement un des meilleurs groupes de métal de cette décennie, qui met toujours la barre un peu plus haut.

Just as we were telling you about Loss, Gaerea’s new album, the band was holding its release party at the Botanique in Brussels. Just a few hours after the album’s release, it was too good an opportunity to pass up to hear these new tracks live! So off we went to Brussels on March 20th for a double dose of Gaerea.

We weren’t the only ones eager to get started, as more than half the venue was already gathered in the corridor before the doors opened. Thick smoke filled the Orangerie, the Botanique venue where Gaerea were performing. We couldn’t see a thing of the stage, and the suspense was palpable as to what lay ahead. At 7.30 pm sharp, the venue is plunged into darkness, and “LBRNTH” rings out. This track is nothing less than the intro to “Nomad” on the album. The live drums bring incredible depth to this moment. Then “Nomad” kicks off. Almost fortunately, the sound takes a few minutes to settle completely, sparing us from committing collective harakiri in the face of this beautiful, powerful and devastating track. The backdrop features the colours of Loss, and we quickly understand why. Indeed, during this first part of the set, the band is going to play the entire album for us! It won’t be in the original order, and that makes perfect sense for this live performance. The track order on the album works very well, but the band has reworked it here to build up to a bigger crescendo. It’s no secret that Gaerea took a new direction with Loss. The live performance here is more incisive than before, encouraging the audience to get more involved. Alpha (vocals) calls for a circle pit and a wall of death… The atmosphere gets going quickly with “Phoenix”. We see what makes up the DNA of Gaerea’s live shows, with Alpha’s highly choreographed and graceful movements. The venue is packed to the rafters and the crowd cheers the band on right to the back. “Submerged” begins with a deep, grave voice, seeming to come from beyond the grave, accompanied only by a soft guitar. Then the massive sound washes over us and sets the pit alight. Here, Gaerea sings and plays something that goes far beyond words, an archaic, visceral force that speaks to us all. Delta (guitar) adds soaring backing vocals, in an almost lyrical style. The intro to “Luminary” has also been reworked for the live show. And the power of this track really comes into its own live. It’s clearly the standout track on this album once played on stage. A sort of guitar battle between Delta and Beta precedes the start of “Uncontrolled”. The lighting follows the rhythm of the prominent cymbals. Next comes “Cyclone”, which starts off gently, with long instrumental and melodic passages, before hitting us with a burst of pure black metal. The crowd responds to every track, and the atmosphere never wanes. “Hellbound” comes along one last time to completely unleash the mosh pit, particularly thanks to Xi’s powerful blast beats. The musicians then leave the stage, before Alpha returns to introduce “Stardust”. With this track, which closes both the album and this part of the concert, the band has taken a gamble on a very different song, with unmistakable Sleep Token influences. To perform this track, in which the band fully embraces this different direction, everyone wears a balaclava, as always, but this time with sequins! “Stardust” features numerous piano and keyboard samples, and listening to this track, one wonders if the next step might be the inclusion of a keyboard on stage… Watch this space!

As the band leaves the stage, a screen descends to present METAMORPHOSIS – Shaping the Unknown, a documentary on the band’s life, creative process and evolution. Announced as lasting around 30 minutes, it actually runs for about 15. The concert’s resumption then takes more than a few by surprise!

The venue quickly fills up again with everyone who had stepped out for a break during the documentary. The evening continues non-stop. Here we hear some of Gaerea’s older tracks, delighting both long-standing and new fans alike. Coma, the band’s penultimate album, features prominently. We’re treated to the fantastic “World Ablaze”, which still works a treat. We even go back to the very post-black metal period of Mirage with the iconic “Laude”. The wall of death and other pit antics are still very much present. Here we reconnect with the band’s roots, and we’re reminded just how much we love all their eras. The band doesn’t confine itself to a single style, but does so with sincerity, and this runs like a thread through all their compositions. Alpha asks the crowd to flash their phones during the gentle intro to “Wilted Flower”. And so we bring this exceptional evening to a close in communion with Gaerea.

Gaerea has treated us to an incredible experience here. We couldn’t have asked for a better release party than an evening entirely dedicated to the band. We can only advise you to give Loss a listen if you haven’t already, and to rush out and see them live as soon as possible. Gaerea are masters of their craft. Everything is meticulously crafted, from the compositions and stage design to the visuals and sound. Undoubtedly one of the best metal bands of this decade, they’re constantly raising the bar a little higher.
