Alors que le groupe avait annoncé son hiatus pour une durée indéterminée, les français de Where Mermaids Drowns nous ont fait la surprise de revenir sur le devant de la scène ce 27 mars avec un EP, Embrace The Ineluctable, en trio cette fois ci, mais avec une envie inchangée de créer de la beauté musicale dans ce que le post rock français a de plus beau à nous offrir.

Souvenez vous, en 2023, nous vous parlions avec enthousiasme des français de Where Mermaids Drown, et notamment leur album Reminisce qu’on l’on avait adoré en studio, à peine un mois avant de les voir sur la scène du Post In Paris. Malgré toutes ces actualités, le groupe a rapidement annoncé un avenir incertain, avec notamment le départ de Pierrick, guitariste du groupe, pour des soucis d’emploi du temps, et surtout le déménagement de Jean-Sébastien au pays du soleil levant. Nous nous étions donc fait à l’idée que leur album live sorti en 2024 serait probablement leur dernier travaux ensemble, et pourtant, les membres du groupe étaient bien loin d’être aussi résigné que nous. C’est donc dans une nouvelle configuration et dynamique qu’Embrace The Ineluctable est né. Un EP qui leur a donné quelques fils à retordre car c’est en trio qu’ils ont du re-apprendre à composer sans changer trop la personnalité de leur musique.
Le résultat est trois petits morceaux, commençant par avec le calme « Resign With Grace » et sa mélodie lumineuse et envoûtante. Dans une douceur planante, nous voici suspendu dans un morceau post rock aux diverses textures qui monte en puissance avec beauté. Il est clair qu’une guitare manque à l’appel par rapport aux morceaux précédents du groupe, mais loin de là l’idée d’avoir un morceau inachevé. Avec « Rebirth. Again. », nous aurons un titre en deux parties distinctes. Une première pleine de douceur, comme lorsque l’on se réveille calmement, où les notes prennent le temps de nous envahir tendrement, puis vient toute la puissance dans sa seconde partie, lorsque la machine est enclenchée. Les notes fusent et le rythme plus soutenu nous donne un coup de boost. L’EP se clôture sur le très beau « Grateful », où le piano surplombe tout, amenant douceur, nous rappelant avec sourire quelques inspirations cute lofi dans le style Animal Crossing, mais en restant pur et dur dans du post rock.
Where Mermaids Drown nous offrent donc en trois morceaux un petit moment de douceur, tout pile ce qu’il fallait pour nous replonger dans leur discographie qu’on aime tant. Comme une preuve qu’ils ne sont pas partis, mais qu’ils s’adaptent, créent différemment, et surtout acceptent les changements que la vie apportent pour renaitre à nouveau. Une belle réussite, à dévorer de toute urgence.

Although the band had announced an indefinite hiatus, the French group Where Mermaids Drowns surprised us by returning to the spotlight on March 27th with an EP, Embrace The Ineluctable, this time as a trio, but with an undiminished desire to create musical beauty within the finest that French post-rock has to offer.
Remember, back in 2023, we spoke enthusiastically about the French band Where Mermaids Drown, and in particular their album Reminisce, which we’d loved in the studio, just a month before seeing them perform at the Post In Paris. Despite all this good news, the band soon announced an uncertain future, notably with the departure of Pierrick, the band’s guitarist, due to scheduling conflicts, and above all Jean-Sébastien’s move to the Land of the Rising Sun. We had therefore resigned ourselves to the idea that their live album, released in 2024, would likely be their final work together, and yet the band members were far from being as resigned as we were. It was thus in a new line-up and dynamic that Embrace The Ineluctable was born. An EP that gave them a bit of a run for their money, as they had to relearn how to compose as a trio without altering the character of their music too much.
The result is three short tracks, beginning with the tranquil ‘Resign With Grace’ and its luminous, spellbinding melody. In a dreamy, soaring atmosphere, we find ourselves suspended in a post-rock track with varied textures that builds in intensity with great beauty. It’s clear that a guitar is missing compared to the band’s previous tracks, but this is far from being an unfinished piece. With “Rebirth. Again.”, we have a track in two distinct parts. The first is full of gentleness, like waking up calmly, where the notes take their time to wash over us tenderly; then comes all the power in the second part, when the machine kicks into gear. The notes fly and the faster tempo gives us a real boost. The EP closes with the beautiful “Grateful”, where the piano dominates everything, bringing a sense of gentleness, reminding us with a smile of some cute lo-fi inspirations in the style of Animal Crossing, whilst remaining pure and true to post-rock.
Where Mermaids Drown treat us to three tracks that offer a moment of pure bliss – exactly what we needed to immerse ourselves once more in their discography, which we love so much. It’s proof that they haven’t gone anywhere, but are adapting, creating in new ways, and above all embracing the changes that life brings to be reborn anew. A real triumph, to be devoured without delay.
