Grandma’s Ashes est un power trio de rock progressif. Leur premier EP, The Fates, sorti en janvier 2021 a mis le groupe sur le devant de la scène et leur a permis de faire des dates un peu partout en France, et une date pleine à craquer à La Boule Noire à Paris. Le trio revient cette année avec son premier album. Intitulé This Too Shall Pass, il sera disponible dès le 17 février via Nice Prod et Baco Music.

L’intro nous fait entendre les trois magnifiques voix des trois membres de la formation. Elles se mêlent pour un titre tour en douceur et en harmonies vocales de toute beauté. Puis viennent les riffs de guitare, les lignes de basse et la batterie avec le titre « Cold Touch ». D’entrée de jeu le talent des trois musiciennes frappe par son évidence. Le trio que forment Myriam, Eva et Edith sait en quelque titre nous faire voyager entre prog rock très influencé 70s mais en allant chercher aussi du côté du stoner ou du garage rock.

Impossible de ne pas headbanger dans son salon au son des titres de Grandma’s Ashes. « Borderlands » vient calmer un peu le jeu, tout en gardant des bons riffs dans sa manche, avant qu’un interlude nous envoie vers la deuxième partie de cet album qui pour le moment est une très belle surprise. Les deux morceaux suivants montrent une autre facette du trio tout en nous donnant une nouvelle raison de vouloir réécouter cet album en boucle. Riffs, harmonies, rythmiques au top tout y est pour nous faire totalement vibrer.

Ne vous laissez pas avoir par la classification prog rock du groupe, on est face à une musique très diverse qui va chercher dans tout pleins de styles sans jamais se perdre. En tout cas cela montre que les trois musiciennes ont une envie folle de proposer au public quelque chose qu’on a pas tant l’habitude d’entendre. Les capacités d’interprètes des trois chanteuses/musiciennes sont à saluer tant chaque titre leur donne à chacune une place de choix.

« Caffeine » vient faire comme son titre l’indique, une grosse décharge qui réveille bien comme il faut. Les riffs sont lourds, quasi doom à certains instants, mais laissent place ensuite à un peu plus de douceur et rythmes dansants. Encore une fois le trio frappe juste et nous laisse sonnés par la qualité des morceaux proposés. Il reste deux titres à la formation pour nous en mettre plein la vue une dernière fois, et comme prévu « Lost At Sea » clôture cet album avec brio.

 

Ne cherchez pas, il faudra dans les prochaines années compter sur Grandma’s Ashes. Les trois musiciennes n’ont rien à envier aux grands groupes et montrent dès le premier album une maturité sonore assez dingue. On ne peut que vous inciter à vous plonger tête la première dans This Too Shall Pass et on vous invite à foncer voir le groupe dès qu’une date près de chez vous arrive!

Grandma’s Ashes is a progressive rock power trio. Their first EP, The Fates, released in January 2021, put the band on the map and allowed them to play dates all over France, including a sold-out date at La Boule Noire in Paris. The trio is back this year with their first album. Entitled This Too Shall Pass, it will be available from February 17th via Nice Prod and Baco Music.

 

The intro lets us hear the three magnificent voices of the three members of the band. They blend together for a track that is full of softness and beautiful vocal harmonies. Then come the guitar riffs, the bass lines and the drums with the title « Cold Touch ». From the start, the talent of the three musicians is obvious. The trio formed by Myriam, Eva and Edith knows how to make us travel between prog rock very influenced by the 70s but also looking for stoner or garage rock.

It’s impossible not to headbang in your living room to the sound of Grandma’s Ashes’ tracks. « Borderlands » calms things down a bit, while keeping some good riffs up its sleeve, before an interlude sends us to the second part of this album, which for the moment is a very nice surprise. The next two tracks show another side of the trio while giving us another reason to want to listen to this album again and again. Riffs, harmonies, top notch rhythms, everything is there to make us totally vibrate.

Don’t let yourself be fooled by the band’s prog rock classification, we’re facing a very diverse music that goes for all kinds of styles without ever getting lost. In any case, it shows that the three musicians have a crazy desire to offer the public something that we are not used to hearing. The interpretative abilities of the three singers/musicians are to be commended, as each track gives them a place of choice.

« Caffeine » comes to make, as its title indicates it, a big discharge which wakes up well as it should. The riffs are heavy, even doom like sometimes,  but then give way to a little more softness and dancing rhythms. Once again the trio hits the nail on the head and leaves us stunned by the quality of the tracks they offer. The band has two tracks left to show us one last time, and as expected « Lost At Sea » closes this album with a bang.

Don’t fool yourselves, Grandma’s Ashes will be a force to be reckoned with in the next few years. The three musicians have nothing to envy to the big bands and show from the first album a sound maturity that is quite crazy. We can only encourage you to dive head first into This Too Shall Pass and we invite you to go and see the band as soon as a date near you comes up!
