Début mars sortait le nouvel album de Haken, intitulé Fauna, que nous avons adoré. Nous voici donc en route pour le Trix à Anvers afin de découvrir cet album en live ! Pour l’occasion, les anglais se sont entourés de Between The Buried And Me pour une co-headline de prog qui s’annonce grandiose, Cryptodira ouvrira les hostilités.

Après un voyage tumultueux vers la Belgique et une panne de mon bus, j’arrive trop tard pour profiter pleinement du set de Cryptodira. Mais, le peu que j’ai pu entendre m’a donné envie de me pencher sur la discographie du groupe. Me voici donc en place pour le début de Between The Buried And Me.

Avant la tournée, Between The Buried And Me nous avaient annoncé que Dustie Waring (guitare) ne pourrait pas être présent mais que ces parties avaient été pré enregistrées pour que le son du groupe soit le plus proche possible de ce que l’on peut entendre normalement. Et effectivement, dès « Extremophile Elite » on en prends plein les tympans! Le son est parfait et nous laisse pleinement prendre la mesure de la qualité des compositions des américains. Tommy Giles Rogers alterne entre le devant de la scène et ses claviers dans le fond, mais nous propose tout au long du set des parties vocales parfaitement maîtrisées.

Le groupe met majoritairement en avant l’excellent Colors II, sorti en 2021, mais n’oublie pas de nous jouer des morceaux issus d’albums moins récents. Quel plaisir de retrouver « Famine Wolf » sur la setlist! Tout au long de la soirée Paul Waggoner sera absolument mémorable à la guitare et ira le plus possible au contact du public belge. Chaque morceau nous rappelle à quel point les américains savent composer des morceaux inoubliables. A droite de la scène Dan Briggs alterne entre sa basse et ses multiples claviers, tout en formant un duo rythmique de choc avec Blake Richardson, lui aussi en très grande forme derrière ses fûts.

Cette co headline nous permet d’avoir un set de plus d’une heure des américains, ce qui nous laisse le plaisir de profiter d’un nombre conséquent de morceaux. Et clairement, le public du Trix en profite pleinement et donne tout sur chaque titre joué. Mais comme toute belle chose à une fin, Tommy nous annonce le dernier morceau de cette soirée. C’est le très jazzy « Voice Of Trespass » qui sera choisi pour 8 dernières minutes endiablées. Le groupe quitte la scène belge largement applaudi en remerciant le public belge d’avoir été aussi énergique!

Encore une fois Between The Buried And Me ont prouvé avec ce set que leur prog métal est toujours d’une versatilité assez impressionnante. On se croirait presque en direct du studio, mais les mouvements des musiciens nous rappellent que nous sommes bien en live! Une performance qui comme les précédentes fera date, et qui nous laisse tous bien chauds pour l’arrivée d’Haken. 

Le back drop très floral de Fauna est posé et nous sommes fin prêts à accueillir les anglais sur scène. Tous vêtus d’une chemise aux couleurs de l’album, les musiciens d’Haken débarquent sur la scène et commencent en trombe avec « Prosthetic »! Bien évidemment, le son est parfait et laisse à chaque musicien une place de choix. Quel plaisir de voir Peter Jones faire son retour derrière les claviers, et imposer son jeu sur des morceaux plus anciens. Dès le premier titre, le public reprend en chœur chaque titre de la setlist, chose toujours assez rare dans le prog métal. On sent que Ross Jennings prend un grand plaisir sur scène, tant il bouge dans tous les sens en chantant. Sa voix reconnaissable entre mille est toujours un plaisir à entendre, et les nouveaux titres comme « The Alphabet Of Me » sont déjà parfaitement maîtrisés.

Richard Henshall et Charles Griffiths sont deux guitaristes hors pair qui, tout au long du set, vont montrer leur versatilité sans limite. Quel plaisir de profiter d’un set avec un son aussi bon tout du long. Le classique « Falling Back To Earth » sera accueilli par de larges applaudissements du public belge, et donne à Conner Green une nouvelle occasion de briller avec son jeu de basse unique. On ne se lasse pas d’entendre ces morceaux légendaires du groupe anglais, mais le nouvel album est sorti et il est grand temps de le mettre en avant. C’est donc parti pour le single « Taurus », déjà connu par cœur par le public. Le set est déjà inoubliable mais le groupe anglais nous balance un de mes morceaux préférés « The Endless Knot », qui confirmera son statut dès les premières notes.

On est déjà bien avancés dans le set mais après le duo « Lovebite » et « Carousel », le groupe nous propose de terminer en beauté avec les cinq parties du titre « Messiah Complex » issu de l’album Virus. Quoi de mieux pour chaque musicien d’avoir à nouveau un moment unique de prendre la lumière avec ce titre dantesque. Ce dernier morceau est l’occasion pour moi de saluer la performance de Raymond Hearne derrière sa batterie! Après plus de 15 minutes parfaites de bout en bout, le groupe quitte la scène du Trix largement applaudi, en laissant au public un souvenir indélébile.

Avec un set mettant largement en avant leur deux derniers albums, Haken ont encore prouvé qu’ils sont au sommet de la scène prog métal européenne (voire mondiale). Les musiciens au top de leur forme ont donné le meilleur d’eux même pendant plus d’une heure en ne nous laissant respirer que quelques instants. Une performance qui me donne envie de revoir le groupe au plus vite (4 ans c’est beaucoup trop long!).

At the beginning of March, Haken’s new album Fauna was released and we loved it. So here we are on our way to the Trix in Antwerp to discover this album live! For the occasion, the English have surrounded themselves with Between The Buried And Me for a prog co-headlining that promises to be great, Cryptodira will open the hostilities.

After a tumultuous trip to Belgium and a breakdown of my bus, I arrived too late to fully enjoy the set of Cryptodira. But, the little I could hear made me want to look at the band’s discography. So here I am for the beginning of Between The Buried And Me.

Before the tour, Between The Buried And Me had announced that Dustie Waring (guitar) would not be present but that these parts had been pre-recorded so that the band’s sound would be as close as possible to what you would normally hear. And indeed, from « Extremophile Elite » onwards, we get an earful! The sound is perfect and lets us fully appreciate the quality of the American’s compositions. Tommy Giles Rogers alternates between the front of the stage and his keyboards in the background, but throughout the set he offers us perfectly mastered vocal parts.

The band mainly puts forward the excellent Colors II, released in 2021, but doesn’t forget to play songs from less recent albums. What a pleasure to find « Famine Wolf » on the setlist! Throughout the night Paul Waggoner will be absolutely memorable on guitar and will get in touch with the Belgian audience as much as possible. Every song reminds us how good the Americans are at writing unforgettable songs. On the right side of the stage Dan Briggs alternates between his bass and his multiple keyboards, while forming a great rhythmic duo with Blake Richardson, who is also in great shape behind his drums.

This co-headline allows us to have a set of more than an hour from the Americans, which gives us the pleasure to enjoy a significant number of songs. And clearly, the Trix audience takes full advantage of this and gives their all on each track played. But as all good things must come to an end, Tommy announces the last song of the evening. The very jazzy « Voice Of Trespass » is chosen for the last 8 minutes of the evening. The band leaves the Belgian stage with a big round of applause, thanking the audience for having been so energetic!

Once again Between The Buried And Me proved with this set that their prog metal is still impressively versatile. It was almost like being in the studio, but the musicians’ movements reminded us that we were in a live setting! A performance that, like the previous ones, will be remembered, and that leaves us all very excited for the arrival of Haken.

The very floral back drop of Fauna is laid down and we are ready to welcome the English on stage. All dressed in shirts with the album’s colours, Haken‘s musicians come on stage and start with « Prosthetic »! Of course, the sound is perfect and gives each musician a place of choice. What a pleasure to see Peter Jones make his return behind the keyboards, and impose his playing on older tracks. From the very first track, the audience sing along to every song in the setlist, which is always a rare thing in prog metal. We can feel that Ross Jennings is having a great time on stage, as he moves around while singing. His recognisable voice is always a pleasure to hear, and the new songs like « The Alphabet Of Me » are already perfectly mastered.

Richard Henshall and Charles Griffiths are two outstanding guitarists who, throughout the set, will show their limitless versatility. What a pleasure to enjoy a set with such a good sound all the way through. The classic « Falling Back To Earth » is greeted by a large applause from the Belgian audience, and gives Conner Green another opportunity to shine with his unique bass playing. We can’t get enough of these legendary songs from the English band, but the new album is out and it’s high time to showcase it. So it’s off to the single « Taurus », already known by heart by the audience. The set is already unforgettable but the English band throws in one of my favourite tracks « The Endless Knot », which will confirm its status from the very first notes.

We are already well into the set but after the duet « Lovebite » and « Carousel », the band offers us to finish in beauty with the five parts of the track « Messiah Complex » from the album Virus. What better way for each musician to have a unique moment to take the light with this dantesque track. This last track is the occasion for me to salute the performance of Raymond Hearne behind his drums! After more than 15 minutes of perfect playing, the band left the Trix stage to great applause, leaving the audience with an indelible memory.

With a set largely featuring their last two albums, Haken proved once again that they are at the top of the European (and even the world) prog metal scene. The musicians at the top of their form gave the best of themselves for more than an hour, leaving us to breathe only a few moments. A performance that makes me want to see the band again as soon as possible (4 years is far too long!).
