Alors que nous attendions leur venue sur la suite de l’EP The Depression Sessions avec Fit For An Autopsy et Thy Art Is Murder, c’était finalement Malevolence qui ont remplacé The Acacia Strain au pied levé. Pas de quoi être triste, puisque les américains nous font le plaisir de sortir un double album, Step Into The Light et Failure Will Follow, ce vendredi 12 mai, via Rise Records. Après la puissance de Slow Decay en 2020, nous étions impatient de découvrir les tours de génies que le quintet de deathcore a à nous jouer.

Les trois premiers titres, de moins de 2 minutes, vont s’enchainer à une vitesse impressionnante et en un clignement de cils, on passe de riff gras, très gras sur « Flourishing », à un titre plus calme mais très hardcore avec « Calf’s Blood », pour replonger dans le deathcore profond de « Chain » et son featuring avec Jacob Lilly du groupe Chamber. Ca va vite, même trop vite à mon goût. « Fresh Bones » apportera la première composition plus abouti, avec des vrais temps pour digérer la puissance des morceaux. Le breakdown se veut efficace avant d’enchaîner avec « Teeth of The Cursed Dog » dont on retient la voix de Vincent Bennett impressionnante de technicité. Les titres sont discontinus dans leur rythmique, renforçant le sentiment qu’on est face à un vrai album halentant et intense. Josef Alfonso du groupe Sunami rejoindra les américains sur « Sinkhole » pour un beau moment de hardcore en 2-step, dont la basse de Griffin Landa et la batterie de Kevin Boutot sont monumentales. L’album se clôture sur le surprenant « None Of Us Asked To Be Here ».

Step Into The Light vient confirmer la place de choix qu’à The Acacia Strain dans la scène deathcore. Des titres rapides, percutants, ne nous laissant pas une seconde de répit, mais alors, qu’ont concocté les américains avec un deuxième album sorti le même jour ? C’est parti pour l’écoute de Failure Will Follow.

Alors que le précédent album a vu ses titres s’enchaîner à une vitesse folle, on est face ici à trois titres dont les durées respectives sont 11, 17 et 10 minutes. De quoi nous surprendre et attirer notre intension. Aimez-vous le doom ? « Pillar Of Salt » se prête avec brio à l’exercice de rendre hommage au style. Dylan Walker de Full of Hell et iRis.EXE prennent l’exercice à coeur et sortent de leurs zones de confort. Quand l’un est plutôt grindcore et la seconde nous a habitué à du goth rock très industriel, on est impressionné par le résultat de cette collaboration. « Bog Walker » se veut plus aérien avant de finir avec le très bon « Basin Of Vows » et son featuring avec Ethan McCarthy de Primitive Man.

The Acacia Strain viennent nous étonner tout en faisant dans la qualité. On est face ici à un double album innovant, et percutant. Il y en a pour tous les goûts, et ravi nos oreilles aficionado de core en tout genre, et de doom. Un très beau moment !

While we were waiting for them to come on the follow-up of The Depression Sessions EP with Fit For An Autopsy and Thy Art Is Murder, it was finally Malevolence who replaced The Acacia Strain at short notice. No reason to be sad, since the Americans are pleased to release a double album, Step Into The Light and Failure Will Follow, this Friday May 12th, via Rise Records. After the power of Slow Decay in 2020, we were eager to discover the genius tricks that the deathcore quintet has to play us.

The first three tracks, less than 2 minutes long, go by at an impressive speed and in a blink of an eye, we go from fat riffs, very fat on « Flourishing », to a calmer but very hardcore track with « Calf’s Blood », to dive back into the deep deathcore of « Chain » and its featuring with Jacob Lilly from the band Chamber. It goes fast, even too fast for my taste. « Fresh Bones » will bring the first more accomplished composition, with real time to digest the power of the tracks. The breakdown is effective before moving on to « Teeth of The Cursed Dog », which features the impressive technical voice of Vincent Bennett. The tracks are discontinuous in their rhythmic, reinforcing the feeling that we are in front of a real halentant and intense album. Josef Alfonso of the band Sunami will join the Americans on « Sinkhole » for a beautiful moment of hardcore in 2-step, where the bass of Griffin Landa and the drums of Kevin Boutot are monumental. The album closes with the surprising « None Of Us Asked To Be Here ».

Step Into The Light confirms the place of choice that The Acacia Strain has in the deathcore scene. Fast, hard-hitting tracks, not leaving us a second of respite, but then, what did the Americans concoct with a second album released the same day? Let’s listen to Failure Will Follow.

Something to surprise us and attract our attention. Do you like doom? « Pillar Of Salt » lends itself brilliantly to the exercise of paying tribute to the style. Dylan Walker from Full of Hell and iRis.EXE take the exercise to heart and step out of their comfort zones. When one is rather grindcore and the second one is used to very industrial goth rock, we are impressed by the result of this collaboration. « Bog Walker » is more aerial before finishing with the very good « Basin Of Vows » and its featuring with Ethan McCarthy of Primitive Man.

The Acacia Strain come to astonish us while making in the quality. We are facing here a double album innovating, and punchy. There is for all the tastes, and delighted our ears aficionado of core in any kind, and of doom. A very nice moment!
