Grosse soirée à The Black Lab en cette fin mai! Deux groupes français sont prêts à faire trembler les murs de la salle de Wasquehal. Tout d’abord les nouveaux venus de Dropdead Chaos qui nous ont littéralement bluffé avec leur premier album un peu plus tôt cette année. Et on pourra également compter sur les légendes du tech death français, Gorod, qui nous ont eux-aussi retourné avec leur nouvel album paru il y a quelques semaines. Autant vous dire que le public lillois s’est donné rendez-vous pour soutenir ces deux formations qui promettent une soirée d’anthologie! Après un petit passage au stand d’excellente street food tenu par Alexandre Suergiu (restaurant Aux Ephérites) et Jean Driège, on est fin prêts pour cette belle soirée musicale.

On commence donc en trombe avec le combo Dropdead Chaos. Peut-on les qualifier de Super Groupe? Oui on peut! Sur scène pas moins de 7 musiciens que nombre, dans la salle, connaissent pour leurs différents projets. Le premier sur scène sera Boris Le Gal (Betraying The Martyrs) qui lance les hostilités avec la rythmique déjà connue par beaucoup de « Underneath The Sound »! En quelques secondes, on se retrouve projeté à notre adolescence, dans les années 2000, avec des titres rappelant les meilleures heures du néo métal. Au chant Renato Di Folco (Trepallium / Les Tambours Du Bronx) et Déha (Wolvennest / Maladie) se partagent le chant et n’hésitent pas à nous faire reprendre les morceaux en chœur. Déha s’occupe également des sonorités hip-hop et va jusqu’à nous montrer ses talents de rappeur. L’ambiance est électrique et on sent que tous les musiciens prennent un pied total devant un public tout acquis à leur cause. Baptiste Ory (Smash Hit Combo), Nils Courbaron (Sirenia) et Raf Pener (T.A.N.K) nous balancent tous les trois des riffs à faire headbanger toute la fosse auxquels s’ajoutent les lignes de basse puissantes de Jacou (Black Bomb A) , littéralement chez lui ce soir. Le groupe est en grande forme et nous joue l’album en laissant une petite place pour une cover de Slipknot. L’ambiance est électrique et le partage entre la scène et la fosse est total, on sent que le groupe est construit sur des belles bases d’amitié et ça fait très plaisir à voir! On aimerait que cette belle prestation de cesse pas mais après un solo DJ de Déha et un solo de batterie de Boris, le groupe repart de plus belle avec « Dropdead » avant de nous annoncer les deux derniers titres de la soirée. « One Last Encore » et le tubesque ‘Humans » sont nos dernières occasions de nous époumoner au son des titres fédérateurs du groupe. Ils quittent la scène visiblement très émus par cet accueil chaleureux et nous promettent de revenir très vite.

Cette prestation de Dropdead Chaos à The Black Lab arrive directement très haut dans la liste des meilleurs concerts que la salle a connu depuis son ouverture. Tout était parfait aussi bien sur scène que dans la fosse. Un début de soirée qu’on est clairement pas prêt d’oublier! Bonne nouvelle de notre côté, on retrouvera le groupe très vite pour une date parisienne. 

On poursuit avec Gorod, qui sont eux aussi avec l’envie de nous retourner les cervicales. Et dès le premier morceau, cette promesse est tenue. Le tech death du groupe est à son apogée! On comprend rapidement pourquoi le groupe fait des émules outre atlantique, tant leur musique égale les groupes étrangers. Les fans sont présents en nombre et n’hésitent pas à accueillir les morceaux avec de chaleureux applaudissements. Les morceaux de The Orb sont bien évidemment mis en avant mais les anciens morceaux ne sont pas oubliés au grand bonheur des plus assidus. De notre côté, c’est notre première devant le groupe bordelais et on prends une véritable baffe en quelque secondes tant les morceaux joués cochent toutes les cases de titres inoubliables. Julien Deyrez hurle dans son micro et nous montre que sa voix est toujours aussi puissante! On sent, là aussi que la formation bordelaise passe une belle soirée et les échanges entre les morceaux renforcent cette sensation. On ne voit pas le temps passer et chaque titre rends nos cous un peu plus sensibles, ce qui est bon signe! Nicolas Alberny et Mathieu Pascal donnent tout côté riffing millimétré tandis que Karol Diers (batterie) et Benoit Claus (basse) forment un duo rythmique magistral! Après un set totalement parfait et un dernier morceau qui termine en beauté cette performance, les musiciens quittent la scène très largement applaudis par tout le public lillois.

Gorod ont ce soir été fidèle à leur réputation et nous nous rappellerons longtemps de leur prestation! Leur tech death est totalement maîtrisé et n’a clairement laissé personne insensible ce soir. Une prestation totalement à la hauteur de nos attentes après l’écoute de The Orb.

So we get things off to a flying start with Dropdead Chaos. Can we call them a Supergroup? Yes you can! On stage are no less than 7 musicians, many of whom are familiar with their various projects. The first on stage will be Boris Le Gal (Betraying The Martyrs) who kicks off the hostilities with the rhythm already familiar to many from ‘Underneath The Sound’! In a matter of seconds, we find ourselves transported back to our teenage years, in the 2000s, with tracks reminiscent of the best hours of neo metal. On vocals, Renato Di Folco (Trepallium / Les Tambours Du Bronx) and Déha (Wolvennest / Maladie) share the spotlight, getting us to sing along. Déha also takes care of the hip-hop sounds and even shows us his rapping skills. The atmosphere is electric, and you can tell that all the musicians are having a great time in front of an audience that is totally behind them. Baptiste Ory (Smash Hit Combo), Nils Courbaron (Sirenia) and Raf Pener (T.A.N.K) all throw down riffs that will have the whole pit on its feet, topped off by the powerful bass lines of Jacou (Black Bomb A), literally at home tonight. The band are in top form and play the album, leaving a little room for a cover of Slipknot. The atmosphere is electric, and there’s a real sense of sharing between the stage and the pit. You can feel that the band is built on a solid foundation of friendship, and that’s great to see! We’d like this great performance to go on forever, but after a DJ solo from Déha and a drum solo from Boris, the band take off again with « Dropdead » before announcing the last two tracks of the evening. One Last Encore » and the hit « Humans » were our last chance to get carried away by the band’s unifying songs. They left the stage visibly moved by the warm welcome and promised to return very soon.

Dropdead Chaos‘s performance at The Black Lab goes straight to the top of the list of the best concerts the venue has seen since it opened. Everything was perfect, both on stage and in the pit. A start to an evening we won’t soon forget! The good news for us is that we’ll be seeing the band again very soon for a Paris date.

Then it’s on to Gorod, who are also keen to turn our heads. And from the very first track, that promise is kept. The band’s tech death is at its best! It’s easy to see why the band are such a hit on the other side of the Atlantic, as their music is the equal of foreign bands. The fans are out in force and don’t hesitate to greet the songs with warm applause. The Orb‘s new songs were obviously given pride of place, but the old favourites were not forgotten, much to the delight of the most devoted fans. It was our first time seeing the Bordeaux band, and we got a real slap in the face in a matter of seconds, as the tracks played ticked all the boxes of unforgettable songs. Julien Deyrez screams into his microphone and shows us that his voice is as powerful as ever! You can tell the Bordeaux outfit are having a great evening, and the exchanges between songs reinforce that feeling. Time flies and each track makes our necks a little more sensitive, which is a good sign! Nicolas Alberny and Mathieu Pascal give their all on the riffing front, while Karol Diers (drums) and Benoit Claus (bass) form a masterful rhythmic duo! After a totally perfect set and a final track that rounded off the performance in style, the musicians left the stage to rapturous applause from the entire Lille audience.

Tonight, Gorod lived up to their reputation and we’ll remember their performance for a long time to come! Their tech death is totally mastered and clearly left no one unmoved this evening. A performance that totally lived up to our expectations after listening to The Orb.
