Alors qu’il y a un an sortait le formidable Skinty Fia, les Irlandais de Fontaines D.C. prouvaient en un album l’étendu de leur talent. On retrouve aujourd’hui le leader charismatique de ce groupe pour son premier album solo, intitulé Chaos For The Sky, sorti via Partisan Records. Alors que celui-ci expliquait que l’écriture de cet album lui est venu lors d’une balade le long de la plage au nord de Dublin, laissons nous porter dans cette promenade.

Les premières notes de la guitare acoustique se lancent , on retrouve le timbre de voix si emblématique du chanteur Irlandais. Le ton est assez sombre, mais vient totalement se contrebalancer par le rythme lumineux et paisible de « Last Time Every Time Forever ». L’univers de Grian semble beaucoup plus calme qu’avec ses compatriotes de Fontaines D.C., et pourtant, on est loin d’être sur des chansons joyeuses. Les paroles viennent totalement contrebalancer l’humeur musicale des morceaux. Je vous parlais en début d’année de l’album de Voyou, Les Royaumes Minuscules, je n’aurai pas cru faire ce genre de comparatif et pourtant, « Bob’s Casino » trouverait parfaitement sa place dans l’album du Français. C’est sur le titre « All Of The People », que je suis touchée en plein cœur. Point culminant de cet album, le morceau vient questionner les relations humaines. La richesse de cet album passe aussi par les nombreux instruments qui donnent une ampleur aux différents morceaux. Guitare, violon, trompette, batterie, claviers, harmonica… Tout y passe pour un joyeux orchestre dramatique, dont « East Coast Bed » en sera votre plus bel exemple. On a envie de s’asseoir autour d’un feu de joie sur « Salit Throwers off a Truck ». L’album se clôture sur un « Season For Pain » et son ton triste, comme à la fin d’un bon drame. Il n’y a pas de saisons pour l’amour, il n’y a pas de saisons pour la douleur, il n’y a pas de saisons pour se délecter de cet album.
Grian Chatten nous propose un très bon premier album, plein d’inspirations, léger, et pourtant si profond. On connaissait déjà son talent, mais on est éblouit par cette production. Il saura, à coup sûr, plaire autant aux fans de post-punk, aux rockeurs ou encore aux fans d’indie. Laissez vous porter par la douceur, la douleur, le réconfort et la tristesse qu’il en dégage.

Now the charismatic frontman is back with his first solo album, Chaos For The Sky, released via Partisan Records. As he explains, the writing of this album came to him during a walk along the beach north of Dublin, let’s take a stroll.

The first notes of the acoustic guitar kick in, and we find the Irish singer’s emblematic vocal timbre. The tone is quite dark, but is totally counterbalanced by the luminous, peaceful rhythm of « Last Time Every Time Forever ». Grian’s world seems a lot calmer than that of his compatriots Fontaines D.C., and yet we’re far from on happy songs. The lyrics totally counterbalance the musical mood of the tracks. At the beginning of the year, I mentioned Voyou’s album Les Royaumes Minuscules, and I didn’t think I’d be making this kind of comparison, yet « Bob’s Casino » would fit in perfectly with the Frenchman’s album. It’s on the track « All Of The People » that my heart is touched. The highlight of the album, the track questions human relationships.The richness of this album is also due to the many instruments that give breadth to the different tracks. Guitar, violin, trumpet, drums, keyboard, harmonica… everything goes into a joyful, dramatic orchestra, of which « East Coast Bed » is your finest example. Salit Throwers off a Truck » makes you want to sit around a bonfire. The album closes with « Season For Pain » and its sad tone, as if at the end of a good drama. There are no seasons for love, there are no seasons for pain, there are no seasons for enjoying this album.
Grian Chatten offers us a very good first album, full of inspirations, light and yet so profound. We already knew of his talent, but we’re dazzled by this production. It’s sure to please post-punk, rock and indie fans alike. Let yourself be carried away by the sweetness, pain, comfort and sadness he exudes.
