Jaye Jayle, le projet solo de Evan Patterson (Young Widows, Total Concrete) sort son quatrième album cette année. Intitulé Don’t Let Your Love Life Get You Down, il est disponible via Pelagic Records. Après un album plus expérimental en 2020, que nous réserve cette nouvelle sortie du musicien américain?

Cet album s’ouvre avec un morceau définitivement blues porté par une multitude de voix se répondant pour former un chœur majestueux. Le son de l’album frappe par sa capacité à nous envelopper dès les premiers instants, la production de Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe) y étant surement pour beaucoup! La voix de Evan Patterson sait se faire douce quand il le faut mais garde ce côté bluesy très appréciable tout du long. Le travail de la basse de Todd Cook frappe par sa diversité. Les lignes souvent résonnantes et puissantes laissent place parfois à des sons plus doux qui accompagnent parfaitement les guitares. Le single « Black Diamonds and Bad Apples », où la voix de Victoria Fisher vient rejoindre celle d’Evan, arrive encore une fois à nous surprendre avec des sonorités nouvelles, qui ne laissent que peu de doute sur le talent de compositeur de l’instigateur de ce projet. On vous laisse d’ailleurs découvrir cette petite pépite musicale en fin d’article. Sur chaque morceaux la batterie de Neil Arbabright se fait douce, tout en montrant l’incroyable maîtrise du musicien. Le blues présent dans la musique autant que dans les paroles touche au cœur et nous montre que ce genre n’a pas fini de nous révéler toutes ces facettes, et c’est normal puisque plus que certains autres ce style va chercher au plus profond des sentiments du compositeur. Corey Smith nous emporte avec ses napes de claviers, et laisse des notes résonner en fond sur l’excellent « The Snake Bite ». Chaque titre apporte sa pièce à l’édifice qu’est cet album, en étant foncièrement différent du précédent mais en gardant une cohérence folle les uns avec les autres. Sur le dernier titre de l’album Bonnie « Prince » Billy vient poser sa voix et Patrick Shiroishi nous enchante avec son saxophone sur un titre qui donne une magnifique dernière impression et une dernière belle image de la qualité du projet.

Jaye Jayle nous enchante avec Don’t Let Your Love Life Get You Down! L’album est une véritable aventure blues qui ne peut laisser indifférent. Les sons de chaque instrument résonnent en nous et nous laissent sans voix. Le talent d’Evan Patterson n’a pas de limites et cet album nous le prouve une fois encore.

Jaye Jayle, the solo project of Evan Patterson (Young Widows, Total Concrete), is releasing its fourth album this year. Entitled Don’t Let Your Love Life Get You Down, it’s available via Pelagic Records. After a more experimental album in 2020, what does this new release from the American musician have in store for us?

The album opens with a definitive blues track featuring a multitude of voices responding to form a majestic chorus. The sound of the album is striking in its ability to envelop us from the very first moments, the production of Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe) surely having a lot to do with it! Evan Patterson‘s voice is gentle when it needs to be, but retains a bluesy quality that’s much appreciated throughout. Todd Cook‘s bass work is striking in its diversity. The often resonant and powerful lines sometimes give way to softer sounds that accompany the guitars perfectly. The single ‘Black Diamonds and Bad Apples’, where Victoria Fisher‘s voice joins Evan‘s, once again manages to surprise us with new sounds that leave little doubt as to the songwriting talent of the man behind this project. We’ll leave you to discover this little musical nugget at the end of the article. On each track, Neil Arbabright‘s drums are gentle, showing off the musician’s incredible mastery. The blues in the music as much as in the lyrics touches the heart and shows us that this genre has not finished revealing all its facets, and that’s normal because more than some others this style goes deep into the feelings of the composer. Corey Smith sweeps us away with his keyboard napes, and lets the notes resonate in the background on the excellent ‘The Snake Bite’. Each track contributes its own piece to the edifice that is this album, being fundamentally different from the previous one but maintaining a crazy coherence with each other. On the last track of the album, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy adds his vocals and Patrick Shiroishi enchants us with his saxophone on a track that gives a magnificent final impression and a last fine image of the quality of the project.

Jaye Jayle has enchanted us with Don’t Let Your Love Life Get You Down! The album is a true blues adventure that will leave no one indifferent. The sounds of each instrument resonate within us and leave us speechless. Evan Patterson’s talent knows no bounds, and this album proves it once again.
