Depuis leurs débuts Holding Absence ne cessent d’impressionner le monde du post hardcore avec une musique toujours évolutive et s’affranchissant volontiers des codes du genre. Après deux albums largement encensés et un split EP avec Alpha Wolf sorti l’an dernier, les gallois nous proposent de découvrir leur troisième album. Intitulé The Noble Art Of Self Destruction, il sera disponible dès le 25 août via Sharptone Records. Grands fans de la formation chez Sounding Shivers on a hâte de découvrir ce que les quatre musiciens nous réservent pour cette nouvelle sorite, crée pour être le chapitre final de la trilogie d’albums sortis entre 2019 et aujourd’hui.

Dès le premier titre la voix de Lucas Woodland nous montre toute sa versatilité, en ayant encore une fois évoluée depuis l’album précédent. Le chanteur alterne voix douce et chant hurlé sans effort et nous transporte dans l’émotion en un instant. Cet album est le premier composé avec Ben Elliott  à la basse, ce qui fait que trois des cinq membres du groupe Falling With Style (séparé depuis 2015) se sont retrouvé dans Holding Absence, et leur complicité se sent dans chaque note. Les épreuves qui parsèment nos vies et qui font de nous qui nous sommes sont au cœur de l’album et parfaitement illustrées par la pochette magnifique réalisée par Bethan Miller sur le thème du Katsugi (méthode de réparation de poteries avec de l’or au Japon). Comme toujours le jeu de batterie de Ash Green est énergique et technique à souhaits et apporte beaucoup à la puissance des morceaux du groupe gallois. Côté guitares, Scott Carey nous enchante avec de belles sonorités qui restent instantanément en tête,  comme sur l’excellent « Scissors ». L’album évoque des sujets difficiles mais le fait avec une puissance musicale qui nous laisse toujours une note d’espoir pour surmonter toutes ces épreuves. « Death, Nontheless » évoque le suicide tandis que « Honey Moon » nous propose une ballade amoureuse digne de groupes comme The Pixies. Pour revenir à « Death, Nontheless », on saluera la performance dingue d’Ash sur ce titre qui nous subjugue avec cette rythmique absolument dantesque!, ainsi que les gang vocals qui font de ce morceau un véritable point d’orgue de l’album! On se laisse transporter par la beauté de « Her Wings » avant que « Liminal » vienne nous remettreun coup d’énergie. Et quelle fin en apothéose avec le majestueux « The Angel In The Marble », qui rejoint sans effort « Wilt » (dernier titre du premier album) ou « Penance », morceaux absolument majeurs du groupe!

D’album en album Holding Absence évoluent en passant une nouvelle marche à chaque fois. The Noble Art Of Self Destruction confirme cela de la plus belle des manières. Le groupe gallois est paré pour une ascension toujours plus rapide des scènes européennes. On ne peut que vous conseiller de découvrir cet album pour ce qu’il est puis de vous replonger dans la trilogie, pour le voir comme le chapitre important qu’il est dans la carrière du groupe. On vous invite à foncer retrouver le groupe sur leurs dates européennes de l’automne donc celle du 14 novembre à Paris.

From the very first track, Lucas Woodland‘s voice shows its versatility, having evolved once again since the previous album. The singer alternates between soft and screaming vocals effortlessly, transporting us into emotion in an instant. This album is the first to feature Ben Elliott on bass, which means that three of the five members of Falling With Style (who split up in 2015) have reunited on Holding Absence, and their complicity can be felt in every note. The trials and tribulations that punctuate our lives and make us who we are are at the heart of the album, and perfectly illustrated by Bethan Miller‘s gorgeous cover on the theme of Katsugi (a method of repairing pottery with gold in Japan). As always, Ash Green‘s drumming is as energetic and technical as you could wish for, adding a great deal of power to the Welsh band’s songs. As for the guitars, Scott Carey delights us with beautiful tones that stay instantly in our heads, as on the excellent ‘Scissors’. The album evokes difficult subjects but does so with a musical power that always leaves us with a note of hope to overcome all these trials. « Death, Nontheless » is about suicide, while « Honey Moon » is a love ballad worthy of bands like The Pixies. Looking back on « Death, Nontheless », we must salute Ash‘s insane performance on this track, which captivates us with its absolutely Dantesque rhythm, as well as the gang vocals that make this track a real highlight of the album! The beauty of ‘Her Wings’ takes your breath away, before ‘Liminal’ gives you a burst of energy. And what a climactic finish with the majestic ‘The Angel In The Marble’, which effortlessly joins ‘Wilt’ (the last track on the first album) and ‘Penance’, two of the band’s most important songs!

From album to album, Holding Absence evolve, taking a new step each time. The Noble Art Of Self Destruction confirms this in the best possible way. The Welsh band are poised for an ever-accelerating rise on the European stages. We can only advise you to discover this album for what it is, and then dive back into the trilogy, to see it as the important chapter it is in the band’s career.
