10 albums déjà que le duo iconique norvégiens Karin Park et Kjetil Nernes, connu sous le nom de Årabrot nous font vivre le rock sous couvert d’inspirations philosophiques avec brio. Ce 13 octobre, ils sont de retour avec leur nouvel album, Of Darkness And Light, sorti via Pelagic Records. Pour les connaisseurs, le titre de l’album fait référence à Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra de Nietzsche, un texte philosophique centré sur la transcendance de nos propres limites, de quoi attiser encore plus notre curiosité n’est-ce pas ?

Guitare et clavier en place, les premières notes du rock atmosphérique nous envoie dans un univers moderne mais teinté de sonorité très 70s. Les voix s’entremélent et se placent au même plan de puissance que la batterie. L’album a été enregistré dans une église, mais pas question de se tenir à carreaux, ici les riffs fusent dans tous les sens avec « You Cast Long Shadows ». L’album se veut accessible et comment faire plus accessible qu’en s’inspirant du groupe le plus connu au monde que son The Beatles ? « Horrors Of The Past » est un pur hommage, jusque dans la manière de chanter. Mais attention, hors de question de faire un titre copié collé, le duo tente l’expérience suivante : Et si les Beatles avaient fait du post-punk ? Aussi étonnant que cela puisse paraitre, ça fonctionne à merveille. Le clip, en image animée, pourrait facilement se poser sur une mélodie techno, mais c’est « Madness » qui héritera de cette techno, à la limite industrielle. La voix de Kjetil Nernes sera énervée et profonde, mais tentera de s’adoucir grâce à la douceur du coeur féminim de Karin Park. Une voix forte et entrainante, c’est la recette parfaite pour un morceau comme « We Want Blood », aussi catchy, stimulant mais surtout exhaltant. Ce rock industriel s’étends sur « Fire! » et laisse apparaitre enfin la voix Karin en premier plan. On finit tout de même l’album en mettant au placard toute cette brutalité, que ce soit en appelant dieu sur « Swan Killer », ou en introduisant la marque d’un son très pop avec « Love Under Will » sonnera même pop.

Årabrot n’ont besoin que de quelques secondes pour nous convaincre. Un rock moderne, plein de créativité, n’hésitant pas à associer la brutalité de l’industriel, la folie de la techno, la technique du rock 70s et la distortion (naturelle) de la voix du post-punk.

Iconic Norwegian duo Karin Park and Kjetil Nernes, also known as Årabrot, have been brilliantly bringing rock to life with philosophical inspiration for 10 albums now. This 13 October, they are back with their new album, Of Darkness And Light, released by Pelagic Records. For those in the know, the title of the album is a reference to Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, a philosophical text centred on the transcendence of our own limits, which is enough to make us even more curious, isn’t it?

Guitar and keyboard in place, the first notes of atmospheric rock send us into a modern universe tinged with very 70s sounds. The vocals intermingle and are on the same level of power as the drums. The album was recorded in a church, but there’s no question of sticking to your guns here, as the riffs fly in all directions on ‘You Cast Long Shadows’. The album aims to be accessible, and what could be more accessible than taking inspiration from the world’s most famous band, The Beatles? « Horrors Of The Past » is a pure tribute, right down to the vocals. But be warned, there’s no question of copying and pasting, so the duo try the following experiment: What if the Beatles had made post-punk? Surprising as it may seem, it works perfectly. The clip, in moving image, could easily be set to a techno melody, but it’s ‘Madness’ that inherits this techno, bordering on industrial. Kjetil Nernes‘ voice is angry and deep, but tries to soften thanks to Karin Park‘s gentle feminine heart. A strong, driving voice is the perfect recipe for a track like ‘We Want Blood’, which is catchy, stimulating and above all exhilarating. This industrial rock expands on « Fire! », finally allowing Karin’s voice to take centre stage. But the album ends with all that brutality out of the way, whether by calling out to God on « Swan Killer », or by introducing a very pop sound with « Love Under Will ».

Årabrot only need a few seconds to convince us. A modern rock, full of creativity, not hesitating to combine the brutality of industrial, the madness of techno, the technique of 70s rock and the (natural) distortion of post-punk vocals.
