A la sortie du travail, un vendredi soir, on ne s’attend pas à prendre la voiture et aller à Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes pour commencer un week-end. Mais c’est bien ce qu’il s’est passé ce 10 novembre pour aller assister aux Bruits d’été, organisés par FLAC et Taste of Mind. Après un voyage bien pluvieux, j’arrive aux Nymphéas,  salle dans laquelle va se passer le festival. L’atmosphère et le dépaysement frappe directement puisque l’accueil se fera par des bruits de jungle, et une décoration très estivale à contrario du temps proposé par dame Nature. Après avoir pu échanger avec la représentante / chargée de com de la FLAC et faire un premier tour d’horizon de la salle, la bonne surprise se fait par la présence d’option végé et vegan sur les stands de nourriture, trop souvent absente sur les festivals de cette taille. On se retrouve sur une date 100% hardcore avec Hometown Crew, Cavalerie, Veto, Drops, Insurgent et Supermodel Stitches.

On commence donc avec Supermodel Stitches, groupe punk hardcore des environs de Lille. Même si le groupe est jeune, on sent directement que le quatuor devant nos yeux n’est pas la première formation pour chaque membre du groupe et que l’expérience de la scène émane de ces derniers. Le jeu est énergique et vient chercher directement le public. L’ambiance qui se dégage est bien amicale et bienveillante,  on sent que les copains et la famille sont venus voir le groupe. Les titres s’enchaînent avec un point d’appui sur leur dernier EP Rupture avec des titres comme “Low Battery” où la voix du chanteur fournit son plein potentiel. Les sonorités sont variés et ne s’arrête pas au Punk Hardcore, on peut facilement dénicher du Melodic Hardcore dans certains titres. Une belle continuité dans ce que nous avions pu avoir lors de leur passage à la Bratcave en septembre dernier. 

C’est avec un EP encore en préparation que le quintet Insurgent se présente à nous.  On voit des têtes familières avec Quentin (Mindslow, Drops) et Hugo ( KLVR, NerveN). Avec un seul titre officiellement sorti ” Compassion is a strength” c’est avec une grande attente que j’attends la prestation. Le résultat est sans appel, l’énergie est folle, Hugo donne tout ce qu’il a sur scène et dans le micro. Plus tourné vers le melodic hardcore, on se retrouve avec une catharsis d’émotion et de paroles introspectives qui se termine par Hugo hurlant sur la foule sans micro. Un avant gout live de tout ce qui pourra être posé sur un CD début 2024.

Plus la peine de les présenter, Drops devient un peu la famille au fur et à mesure des reports. Malheureusement , et je vais finir par croire être un chat noir, le quintet est réduit à quatuor dû à l’absence de Jerem, guitariste lead du groupe. Sans surprise, le groupe délivre son hardcore positif entremélé d’echange avec le public sur la politique, l’acceptation de soi et le bien être animal. Le public est clairement chaud et les 2 step et sing-along s’enchaînent dans le pit. On peut reconnaitre les gens de la scène hardcore de Paris, Eiffel Assault, dans le public qui rassure le fait que la scène Hardcore du Nord commence à faire son nom dans la France et ramène du monde. 

Dernier groupe du Nord – Pas de Calais de la soirée, VETO, originaire de Dunkerque venant défendre leur dernier EP Cursing them all sorti en 2022. Le chanteur vient chercher la foule, bien qu’ayant des allures du chanteur de Counterparts, le groupe se trouve dans un registre tout autre. Les rythmes de batterie sont énergiques et le chanteur donne de sa personne en allant couvrir chaque mètre carré de la scène. L’ambiance qui s’en dégage est plutôt good vibes, on hésiterait même à relancer un peu Tony Hawk tellement certains riffs peuvent se rapprocher des soundtracks Punk de ce dernier.

Premier groupe non nordiste à se présenter sur la scène. Le groupe parisien Cavalerie est un peu l’OVNI de la soirée avec ses nuances plus thrash que le reste de la prog. Vêtements full black, les lumières deviennent et resteront rouges tout le set, T-Shirt KickBack porté par le guitariste. Le message est clair, on est là pour se casser la gueule. Ressenti dès le premier titre, les riffs sont rapides à ne plus distinguer les notes, les kicks et lignes de basse se rapprochant du beatdown. Telle la couleur des lumières, le chanteur appelle au sang dans la salle et elle lui rendra. Le set se termine par la reprise de “ I wanna be your dog” et ça ne fait aucun doute que le siège de la salle a été un réel succès.

Pour finir, les têtes d’affiche de la prog, Hometown Crew, viennent clôturer cette belle soirée. On change à nouveau totalement d’ambiance pour un style beaucoup plus Youth Crew. Le groupe vient poser ses amplis pour terminer leur tournée française à Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes. Le quintet néerlandais, nous emmène avec eux dans les titres de leur dernier EP Nothing Lasts Forever. Il a fallu attendre leur apparition pour avoir les vrais premiers stage dive de la soirée. Le groupe donne tout sur scène, faisant même venir Res et Pierre de Drops pour un feat, les deux groupes étant amis et ayant tournés pas mal de fois ensemble. On termine le concert avec le sourire aux lèvres et l’envie de revenir pour la prochaine édition.

Pas de doute que Bruits d’Eté est un festival à surveiller de très près dans ses prochaines éditions. Ce dernier se veut inclusif dans les différentes gestions et stands ( bouffe VG, prévention IST, stand Hardcore Cares …). On ne peut qu’aussi souligner l’immersion via les sons, la décoration de la salle qui m’a vraiment bluffé dès l’entrée. Un stand de maquillage fluo est aussi présent sur site permettant de renforcer l’aspect festival d’été que veut se donner Bruits d’Eté. La programmation hardcore de cette année regroupée en une journée permet bien de se rendre compte que la scène Nordiste et globalement française du hardcore ne fait que prendre de l’ampleur.

When you get off work on a Friday evening, you don’t expect to get in the car and drive to Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes to start the weekend. But that’s exactly what happened on November 10th to attend the Bruits d’été festival, organised by FLAC and Taste of Mind. After a rainy journey, I arrived at Les Nymphéas, the venue for the festival. I was immediately struck by the atmosphere and the change of scenery, as I was greeted by the sounds of the jungle and a very summery decor, in contrast to the weather proposed by Mother Nature. After chatting to the FLAC representative and getting an initial overview of the venue, we were pleasantly surprised by the presence of vegan and vegetarian options on the food stands, which are all too often absent from festivals of this size. We found ourselves on a 100% hardcore date with Hometown Crew, Cavalerie, Veto, Drops, Insurgent and Supermodel Stitches.

So we begin with Supermodel Stitches, a hardcore punk band from the Lille area. Even though the band is young, you can tell straight away that the quartet in front of you is not the first time each member of the group has played together, and that they all have stage experience. Their playing is energetic, and goes straight to the audience. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, with the feeling that friends and family have come to see the band. The tracks follow on from one another, with a focus on their latest EP, Rupture, with tracks like « Low Battery » where the singer’s voice delivers its full potential. The sounds are varied and don’t stop at Punk Hardcore, you can easily find Melodic Hardcore in certain tracks. It’s a fine continuation of what we heard when they played at La Brat Cave last September.

With an EP still in preparation, the quintet Insurgent present themselves to us. We see some familiar faces with Quentin (Mindslow, Drops) and Hugo ( KLVR, NerveN). With only one song officially released, ‘Compassion is a strength’, it was with great anticipation that I awaited their performance. The result is unmistakable, the energy is insane, Hugo gives everything he’s got on stage and in the microphone. Turning more towards melodic hardcore, we find ourselves with a catharsis of emotion and introspective lyrics that ends with Hugo screaming at the crowd without a microphone. A live foretaste of everything that could be put on a CD in early 2024.

There’s no need to introduce them any more, Drops are becoming a bit of a family as the reviews go on. Unfortunately, and I’m going to end up thinking I’m a black cat, the quintet has been reduced to a quartet due to the absence of Jerem, the band’s lead guitarist. Unsurprisingly, the band deliver their positive hardcore, interspersed with exchanges with the audience about politics, self-acceptance and animal welfare. The crowd were clearly into it, and the 2-step and sing-alongs went down a storm in the pit. People from the Paris hardcore scene, Eiffel Assault, can be spotted in the crowd, reassuring us that the northern hardcore scene is starting to make a name for itself in France and is bringing people at shows.

The last Nord – Pas de Calais band of the evening, VETO, from Dunkirk, come to defend their latest EP Cursing them all, released in 2022. The singer comes out to get the crowd, and although he looks like the lead singer of Counterparts, the band are in a completely different league. The drum beats are energetic and the singer gives it his all, covering every square metre of the stage. The atmosphere is one of good vibes, and some of the riffs are so reminiscent of Tony Hawk’s punk soundtracks that you’d be tempted to throw them back.

The first band not from the north of France is to take to the stage. Parisian band Cavalerie are the UFO of the evening, with a more thrashy edge than the rest of the line-up. Dressed in full black, the lights turn and stay red throughout the set, the guitarist wears a KickBack T-shirt. The message is clear: we’re here to kick some ass. You can feel it from the very first track, the riffs are so fast you can’t make out the notes, the kicks and bass lines are almost beatdown. Like the colour of the lights, the singer calls for blood in the room, and it will return. The set ends with a cover of ‘I wanna be your dog’, and there’s no doubt that the venue was a real success.

Finally, the headliners of the night, Hometown Crew, bring the evening to a close. Once again, it’s a complete change of atmosphere, with a much more Youth Crew style. The band put down their amps at the end of their French tour in Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes. The Dutch quintet take us through tracks from their latest EP Nothing Lasts Forever. We had to wait for their appearance to get the first real stage dive of the evening. The band give it their all on stage, even bringing in Res and Pierre from Drops for a featuring, the two bands being friends and having toured together quite a few times. We finished the concert with a smile on our faces and the desire to come back for the next edition.

There’s no doubt that Bruits d’Eté is a festival to keep a close eye on in future editions. The festival aims to be inclusive in its management and stands (VG food, STI prevention, Hardcore Cares stand, etc.). We can’t fail to mention the immersion provided by the sounds and the decoration of the room, which really blew me away as soon as I walked in. There’s also a fluorescent make-up stand on site, reinforcing the summer festival feel that Bruits d’Eté is aiming for. This year’s line-up of hardcore acts, packed into one day, shows that the Nordic and French hardcore scene as a whole is only going from strength to strength.
