Décembre commence fort à l’Aéronef avec un combo de deux soirées en une ce 1er décembre ! En effet, les lillois de Big Death Amego s’offrent une release party grandiose sur la mezzanine de l’Aéronef en ce jour de sortie du clip de « Die or follow Me ». S’ensuit une soirée en club dont l’Aéronef a le secret avec les locaux de Heat Cruise, les néerlandais de Marathon et les américains de Militarie Gun pour clôturer la fête. Face à cette affiche magnifique, il n’est pas étonnant de voir que la date soit complète. On vous raconte tout de cette soirée qui restera à coup sûr dans les annales !

Une fois par mois, l’Aéronef ouvre sa mezzanine à un groupe local voulant se faire découvrir pour ce qu’ils appellent le Warm me up. Cette fois c’est donc les lillois de Big Death Amego, que nous avions vu à Halloween à la Brat Cave, de nous proposer leur prestation, en ce jour de release officielle de leur EP Die Or Follow Me. De mémoire de mezzanine, on n’avait jamais vu autant de monde ! Alors que la salle est encore en train de se remplir, les lillois montent sur scène. On est heureux de constater qu’ils ont retrouvé leur deuxième guitariste Clément, absent lors de leur dernier concert. Sur « Birds » Clément et Pierre, les deux guitaristes en profiteront d’ailleurs pour trinquer tandis que Louis et Sacha nous offrent un beau passage basse/batterie. Évidemment nous ne pouvions pas passer à côté de « Die or Follow Me » dont le clip est sorti pile une heure avant le début du concert, ce qui nous a permis de le visionner dans les transports nous y amenant ! Le clip est à l’image du titre que nous jouent ce soir les cinq musiciens : énergique ! Et on va en avoir une preuve de plus avec le pogo qui démarre lentement sur ce titre. « Pressure », qui commence avec le traditionnel 1,2,3,4, hurlé par Louis avant que Hugues ne reprenne le relais, amène encore un peu plus de monde à pogoter. Le scream de Hugues résonne comme un véritable exutoire à la pression. Le groupe arrive à se mettre le public dans la poche, au point de réussir à leur faire lever les bras façon concert de pop mélancolique sur les « lalala » de « Pressure ». Au passage, le bar se prend une blague de Hugues sur sa capacité à servir toute la salle… et pourtant ils ont une équipe de choc qui assurera toute la soirée malgré les nombreuses commandes d’un public assoiffé ! Il semblerait que Big Death Amego soit bien décidé à faire effondrer cette mezzanine, puisque Hugues et Louis vont investir la fosse, Hugues laissant même son micro afin de pouvoir être libre de déchainer le pogo à sa guise. On termine donc ce Warm me up avec un growl et un pogo que la mezza n’a probablement jamais vu ! Nul doute que nous nous souviendrons de ce live !
Pas le temps de s’attarder trop longtemps à reprendre nos esprits, on redescend dans le Club afin d’y accueillir Heat Cruise, autre groupe local de la soirée. Les lillois étaient la semaine dernière au Pico, et se retrouvent propulsés dans un club complet de l’Aéronef, quel plaisir ! Et c’est amplement mérité pour le groupe qui nous propose son style bien à lui, mélangeant diverses influences, entre le post hardcore et le punk rock. Leur temps de set est assez court (environ 30 minutes), mais les lillois arrivent à nous montrer toute leur palette musicale. Certains titres sont agrémentés de sampler, d’autres sont plus calmes, nous amenant davantage dans la mélancolie, tandis qu’on se sent l’envie de pogoter sur d’autres. Malgré l’échauffement sur la mezza, le public gardera ses forces pour les deux formations suivantes, et accueillera chaleureusement mais calmement le groupe. Durant les transitions, le groupe semble presque timide face au public nombreux mais cette impression disparaît dès lors que la musique retentit. Les musiciens se présentent de manière très naturelle face à nous, sans jeu de scène particulier, sans costume, habillés comme on peut l’être tous les jours. Et ils envoient un son d’une énergie dingue, avec des scream particulièrement réussis qui nous procurent diverses émotions, notamment sur « Yesterday ». Heat Cruise seront largement applaudi à la fin de la prestation et on en aurait bien redemandé… Mais il reste encore deux groupes sur cette soirée chargée !
On passe donc à Marathon, nom qui correspond à cette soirée ! Les néerlandais d’Amsterdam arrivent sur scène et on sent rapidement qu’on a encore à faire à un groupe aux multiples influences et qui a créé son propre son ! On entend rapidement le post punk nous rappelant les contrées Anglo Saxonnes. Très rapidement les têtes des protagonistes se secouent et les cheveux volent en tous sens. Le groupe évolue en fonction des titres et des sonorités qu’ils veulent nous offrir. Ils sont donc parfois trois, quatre ou cinq sur scène. On est face à un véritable mur de guitare lorsqu’elles sont toutes les 4 présentes sur scène. Un clavier vient également agrémenter la sonorité du groupe, toujours selon les titres. On sent que Marathon ne s’interdit rien et explore différents univers, n’hésitant pas à rajouter ou enlever des instruments selon leur besoin. Ils ont d’ailleurs commencé comme groupe de shoegaze psychédélique avant d’aller chercher des sonorités davantage post punk. On ne peut que s’en féliciter car les mélodies qui en ressortent sont uniques et nous invitent à entrer dans l’univers du groupe très facilement. On n’est pas très étonnés de voir le batteur arborer un t -shirt Deadletters, autre groupe ayant un univers propre et une grande liberté dans les sonorités qu’ils proposent. Tout ce que nous propose Marathon semble avoir l’objet de recherches minutieuses pour nous sortir exactement ce qu’ils avaient en tête, sans jamais être dans une sophistication à outrance. Les deux membres centraux du groupe le sont sur scène et semblent possédés durant toute la prestation, sautant, tournant, et jouant dans une espèce de transe. Les lumières psychédéliques renforcent cette impression d’avoir atterri dans un autre monde à la fois chaotique et exultant. Bref, on est pleinement rentrés dans la proposition de Marathon et il est clair qu’on guettera leurs prochaines sorties musicales et visites dans nos contrées.
Vient enfin le tour de Militarie Gun, appelé à clôturer cette soirée dantesque. On sent que le public les attendait et les rangs se resserrent très vite lors de leur entrée sur scène. Le groupe est rapidement très à l’aise ce qui désinhibe aussi très vite le public. Un pogo à faire trembler le sol démarre dès « Pressure Cooker”, le troisième titre du set. Ils enchaînent les morceaux et déroulent un punk rock efficace. La voix de Ian Shelton résonne comme un appel à se déchainer. Elle est parfois presque saturée comme dans “Never Fucked Up Once”, parfois beaucoup plus posée comme dans “Will Logic”. Les slams démarrent et on retrouve notamment les Big Death qui sautent gaiement depuis la scène. Certains refrains sont repris en chœur par un public particulièrement en forme. Un ou deux slameurs finiront même au micro durant quelques secondes, le tout dans une ambiance très bon enfant et respectueuse qui rend hommage au style. Les titres sont courts, et Ian nous annonce que le groupe a pour ambition de nous en présenter 21 ce soir, ce qu’ils feront ! L’énergie que déploie les cinq protagonistes est digne des plus grands. Leur aisance scénique et leur façon d’emmener tout le public est d’autant plus incroyable que le groupe ne s’est formé qu’en 2020 ! On sent au fil des morceaux une identité propre au groupe, avec un dynamisme dans les morceaux souvent entre mélancolie et explosion des émotions, le tout dans un équilibre qui nous maintient en haleine durant tout le concert ! Ian Shelton, leader et tête pensante du groupe, est un frontman d’exception, soutenu par toute sa bande, dont on sent poindre diverses influences, autant dans le punk-rock que le hardcore, l’indie rock ou le post. Les mélodies qui retentissent tout au long de la soirée nous font passer par divers états émotionnels, mais toujours dans le partage avec le groupe. Lorsque la fin du concert arrive, on s’attend à tout de la part de Ian qui lâche vraiment tout sur scène. Et effectivement il finira dans le public dont certains ont à l’inverse investi la scène d’où ils sauteront pour rejoindre le chanteur dans son slam de fin de concert sur ”Do It Faster”. Le groupe reviendra nous interpréter “Fell On My Head”, ce qu’on dû clairement faire certains entre pogos et slam déchainés… Ainsi se clôture le marathon des 21 titres de Militarie Gun, dont aucun n’est à jeter.
On se sent à la fois rincé et plein d’ondes positives à la fin de cette soirée. Encore une fois un des clubs dont l’Aéronef a le secret avec en plus un joli Warm Me Up en bonus. En effet quel bonheur d’avoir pu voir Big Death Amego participer à cette soirée. Au vu de leur notoriété grandissante, du nombre de personnes présentes ce soir et de la qualité de leur set, on espère les voir évoluer rapidement dans le Club ! Dans celui-ci on a justement pu ce soir découvrir le talent scénique de trois groupes nous offrant trois variantes du punk au sens large : post hardcore aux nuances punk rock avec Heat Cruise, post punk teinté de shoegaze psychédélique avec Marathon et enfin punk rock aux multiples influences avec Militarie Gun. Tout cela a permis une belle harmonie de la soirée tout en étant variée. Bref une soirée avec quatre groupes talentueux, des découvertes, une ambiance respectueuse : tout ce pour quoi on se déplace avec plaisir dans les salles de concert !

December gets off to a great start at l’Aéronef with a combo of two nights in one on 1 December! Big Death Amego from Lille will be hosting a spectacular release party on the Aéronef’s mezzanine on the day of the release of their ‘Die or follow Me’ video. This was followed by the kind of club night the Aeronef is famous for, with locals Heat Cruise, Dutch band Marathon and Americans Militarie Gun rounding things off. With such a magnificent line-up, it’s hardly surprising that the date is sold out. We tell you all about a night that’s sure to go down in history!

Once a month, l’Aéronef opens its mezzanine to a local band who want to be discovered for what they call the Warm me up. So this time it’s Lille’s Big Death Amego, who we saw on Halloween at La Brat Cave, to perform for us on the day of the official release of their EP Die Or Follow Me. In mezzanine memory, we’ve never seen so many people! While the room was still filling up, the band from Lille took to the stage. We were delighted to see that they had reunited with their second guitarist, Clément, who was absent from their last concert. On ‘Birds’, Clément and Pierre, the two guitarists, take the opportunity to have a drink, while Louis and Sacha offer us a beautiful bass/drums passage. Of course, we couldn’t miss ‘Die or Follow Me’, the video for which was released just an hour before the start of the concert, so we were able to watch it on the way there! The video reflects the energy of the track the five musicians are playing tonight! And we’re going to get one more proof of that with the pogo that starts slowly on this track. « Pressure », which kicks off with the traditional 1,2,3,4, shouted by Louis before Hugues takes over, gets even more people pogoing. Hugues‘ scream sounds like a real outlet for the pressure. The band managed to win over the audience, to the point of getting them to raise their arms in a melancholy pop concert style on the « lalala » of « Pressure ». Incidentally, Hugues makes a joke about the bar’s capacity to serve the whole room… and yet they’ve got a crack team that will keep them going all evening despite the numerous orders from a thirsty crowd! It seems that Big Death Amego are determined to make this mezzanine collapse, since Hugues and Louis are going to take over the pit, Hugues even leaving his microphone to be free to unleash the pogo as he pleases. The Warm me up ends with a growl and a pogo that the mezza has probably never seen! There’s no doubt we’ll remember this live show!
No time to linger too long to catch our breath, we head back down to the Club to welcome Heat Cruise, another local band of the evening. The band from Lille were at the Pico last week, and now find themselves in a full club at L’Aéronef – what a pleasure! And it’s a well-deserved treat for the band, who bring us their very own style, mixing influences from post-hardcore to punk rock. Their set is fairly short (around 30 minutes), but the band from Lille manage to show us their full musical range. Some tracks feature samplers, others are calmer and more melancholy, while others leave you wanting more. Despite the warm-up on the mezza, the crowd save their strength for the next two bands, and give the band a warm but calm welcome. During the transitions, the band seemed almost shy in front of the large audience, but this impression disappeared as soon as the music started. The musicians present themselves in a very natural way in front of us, with no particular stage act, no costume, dressed as you would be every day. And they deliver a sound of insane energy, with some particularly good screams that stir up a range of emotions, especially on ‘Yesterday’. Heat Cruise were widely applauded at the end of their set, and we were left wanting more… But there are still two bands left on this busy evening!
So we move on to Marathon, a name that fits the evening! The Dutch band from Amsterdam take to the stage, and it’s clear that this is another band with multiple influences who have created their own sound! You soon hear a post-punk sound reminiscent of Anglo-Saxon lands. Very quickly the heads of the protagonists are shaking and the hair is flying in all directions. The band evolves according to the titles and sounds they want to offer us. Sometimes there are three, four or five of them on stage. There’s a real wall of guitar when all 4 of them are on stage. The band’s sound is also enhanced by a keyboard, depending on the track. It’s clear that Marathon are not afraid to explore different worlds, adding or removing instruments as they see fit. In fact, they started out as a psychedelic shoegaze band before moving on to more post-punk sounds. And that’s all to the good, because the melodies that emerge are unique and invite you into the band’s universe with ease. We’re not at all surprised to see the drummer sporting a Deadletters t-shirt, another band with their own universe and a great deal of freedom in the sounds they offer. Everything Marathon comes up with seems to have been meticulously researched to deliver exactly what they had in mind, without ever being overly sophisticated. The two central members of the band are on stage and seem possessed throughout the performance, jumping, spinning and playing in a kind of trance. The psychedelic lighting reinforces the impression of having landed in another world, both chaotic and exultant. In short, we’re fully into what Marathon have to offer, and it’s clear that we’ll be on the lookout for their next musical outings and visits to our shores.
Finally it was Militarie Gun‘s turn to close this dantesque evening. You could tell the crowd were waiting for them, and the ranks quickly closed as they took to the stage. The band were soon at ease, and the audience were soon uninhibited. A floor-shaking pogo kicks off with « Pressure Cooker », the third track of the set. The band went from one track to the next, delivering an effective brand of punk rock. Ian Shelton‘s voice sounds like a call to action. Sometimes it’s almost saturated, as in « Never Fucked Up Once », sometimes it’s much more sedate, as in « Will Logic ». The slams started, with the guys of Big Death jumping up and down from the stage. Some of the refrains were taken up in chorus by a particularly enthusiastic audience. One or two of the slammers even took to the mike for a few seconds, all in a very good-natured and respectful atmosphere that paid tribute to the style. The tracks are short, and Ian tells us that the band’s ambition is to perform 21 of them tonight, which they will! The energy displayed by the five protagonists is worthy of the greatest. Their ease on stage and the way they carry the whole audience along is all the more incredible given that the band only formed in 2020! You can feel the band’s own identity as the songs unfold, with a dynamism that often veers between melancholy and an explosion of emotions, all in a balance that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the concert! Ian Shelton, the band’s leader and mastermind, is an exceptional frontman, supported by his entire band, whose influences range from punk rock to hardcore, indie rock and post rock. The melodies that ring out throughout the evening take us through various emotional states, but always in a spirit of sharing with the band. When the concert comes to an end, you expect everything from Ian, who really lets it all out on stage. And indeed he did end up in the audience, some of whom had actually taken to the stage and jumped up to join the singer in his end-of-concert slam on « Do It Faster ». The band will return to perform « Fell On My Head », which some of the crowd must clearly have done, between pogos and unleashed slams… And so ends the marathon of 21 tracks from Militarie Gun, none of which is to be discarded.
At the end of the night, you’re left feeling both drained and full of positive vibes. Once again, one of L’Aéronef’s unmissable club nights, with a nice Warm Me Up as a bonus. It was a real treat to see Big Death Amego take part in the evening. Given their growing reputation, the number of people present this evening and the quality of their set, we hope to see them in the Club soon! In the Club this evening, we were able to discover the stage talent of three bands offering us three variants of punk in the broadest sense: post hardcore with punk rock nuances with Heat Cruise, post punk tinged with psychedelic shoegaze with Marathon and finally punk rock with multiple influences with Militarie Gun. It all added up to a harmonious yet varied evening. In short, an evening of four talented bands, some new discoveries and a respectful atmosphere: everything that makes concert halls such a pleasure to go to!
