En ce début décembre, c’était à Gand qu’il fallait se rendre si le hardcore fait partie de vos genres de prédilection, puisque la salle de Viernulvier proposait une affiche à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte. En effet, les américains de Stick To Your Guns viennent fêter les (un peu plus) de dix ans de leur album Diamond! Et pour rendre cette soirée encore plus inoubliable, ils sont accompagnés de leurs compatriotes de End It et Koyo ainsi que des québécois de Get The Shot! La salle affichait évidemment complet pour cette soirée placée sous le signe du mosh pit!

En découvrant les lieux on se dit qu’il est surprenant de voir ce genre de groupes dans un espace qui s’apparente plus à une salle de bal. Quand on sait que les concerts de hardcore aux Etats Unis peuvent se dérouler dans des gymnases éclairés comme en plein jour,  on se dit que les groupes seront aussi surpris que nous.

On commence la soirée avec Koyo, qui montent sur scène devant une salle déjà pleine à craquer! Leur album Would You Miss It ? ayant été très apprécié par la rédaction, nous avions hâte de découvrir le groupe en live! Et d’entrée nous sommes conquis par la prestation de Joey Chiaramonte et sa bande. On commence doucement pour que le public se réveille mais les fans sont déjà présents pour reprendre les morceaux en chœur. Toute l’équipe new yorkaise sur scène semble ravi de l’accueil des belges et remercie le public d’être venu tôt pour les écouter. Le groupe oscille entre hardcore et post hardcore avec brio et nous fait passer par beaucoup d’émotions en une petite trentaine de minutes. Sur un des morceaux, nous sommes surpris de voir Adam Galindo, batteur de Stick To Your Guns, prendre le micro pour une apparition innateudue très réussie. Les premiers two steps arrivent vite et nous annoncent déjà une soirée bien énervée. Le groupe quitte la scène largement applaudi en ayant conquis le public et en nous ayant confirmé qu’ils sont un groupe à suivre de près.

On enchaine assez rapidement avec End It, venus tout droit de Baltimore! Aye God arrive sur scène et commence a capella avant que les instruments viennent le rejoindre pour un hardcore bien efficace. Le petit reproche qu’on pourra faire est que les titres sont un peu trop entrecoupés par les interventions du chanteur. Evidemment pleines de messages politiques forts elles sont  malheureusement un peu nombreuses et nous empêchent d’avoir plus de titres sur la setlist. Côté pit ça se réveille encore un peu plus avec les premiers véritables mosh pits de la soirée. Côté musique, imaginez retrouver le meilleur du hardcore des années 90 dans un son résolument moderne avec des titres bien revendicatifs comme on aime. Evidemment, on ne peut penser à Baltimore sans penser à The Wire, et on sent via les paroles que les choses n’ont pas beaucoup changé dans la ville et dans le pays en général depuis la création de cette série mythique. Après un set express qui nous montre bien ce que la formation a dans le ventre, ils nous quittent en ayant eux aussi marqué le public belge! On espère les revoir pour un set plus long pour découvrir plus de morceaux de leur discographie.

Petit rafraichissement pris, nous sommes fin prêts pour le set de Get The Shot que nous sommes ravis de retrouver après la sortie de l’excellent Merciless Destruction l’an dernier. Ca y est le public est en feu et dès la première seconde les slams et mosh pits vont commencer pour ne plus cesser de tout le set. La scène a un atout de choix, à savoir un rebord large où seul Jean-Philippe Lagacé est présent, ce qui permettra aux plus téméraires de faire leur meilleur slams et meilleurs two steps depuis cet endroit. Le titre du dernier album représente parfaitement ce qui se passe dans la salle! L’enchainement des titres est parfait et nous laisse profiter de ce que le groupe de Québec fait de mieux. Le public répond présent aux sollicitations du groupe avec une envie non dissimulée. Il commence à faire bien chaud et le pit commence à ressembler à une fourmilière géante tant tout le monde bouge dans tous les sens. Quel bonheur de retrouver un de nos groupes de hardcore préféré dans une énergie aussi puissante. Evidemment côté thématiques, on garde tout ce qui fait le sel du hardcore, et on n’hésite pas à reprendre les gangs vocals en marche. Jean-Philippe gonfle ses bras avec un grand sourire sur les oreilles tout au long du set en nous livre, tout comme les musiciens une performance inoubliable. Quand la fin de la partie sonne, on sait qu’on a vu un set d’anthologie qui nous laisse espérer que Get The Shot reviendront nous voir en France très rapidement en tête d’affiche! En tout cas, on a passé un moment parfait en leur compagnie et on prend une petite pause ravis de cette déferlante musicale qu’ils nous ont offert.

Il est temps de retrouver Stick To Your Guns pour le set tant attendu! Le groupe arrive sur scène après un « Take On Me » repris par tout le public. Et c’est parti pour Diamond en entier et dans l’ordre avec évidemment le titre éponyme en entrée de set. Dès les premières secondes, la fête reprend de plus belle dans le pit, et le sourire des musiciens sur scène prouve que l’ambiance est au beau fixe partout dans la salle. On avait vu le groupe au Motocultor cette année, mais rien ne pouvait nous laisser présager la vague d’énergie à la quelle nous allions assister ce soir! Les fans sont aux anges de fêter les 10 ans de cet album et n’hésitent pas à demander à Jesse Barnett le micro pour crier les paroles à sa place, ce qu’il fera volontiers de nombreuses fois. Le chanteur n’hésitera pas à redire à quel point il est surpris qu’une salle aussi belle ait accepté de les laisser jouer avec un public aussi en forme dans la salle. On prend un plaisir immense à hurler les paroles de « Against Them All », « We Still Believe » ou « Beyond The Sun » tout en évitant de se faire écraser par le pit incessant. Les slams continuent encore et encore tout comme les circle pits sans jamais cesser. Andrew Rose (basse), Chris Rawson (guitare), Josh James (guitare) et Adam Galindo (batterie) sont tous dans une forme olympique et nous livrent une prestation qu’on est pas prêt d’oublier! « Built Upon The Sand » annonce la fin de l’album mais il nous reste de la voix pour hurler les paroles une fois de plus.

Evidemment la soirée n’est pas finie et le groupe continue avec quelques titres issus du reste de sa discographie. Les mythiques « Nobody » et « Married To The Noise » seront accueillis par des gangs vocals de tout le public belge. Jesse nous remercie pour l’accueil de folie et de les soutenir depuis tant d’années avant de terminer en beauté cette soirée avec « Amber ». Le groupe restera longtemps sur scène pour profiter des derniers applaudissements des fans et se lancer dans le traditionnel lancé de setlists, médiators et baguettes. De notre côté, nous quittons la salle ravis de ce moment intense passé en compagnie de quatre groupes aussi impliqués dans leur set et dans cette scène toujours aussi accueillante.

La soirée passée en Gand à tenue toutes ses promesses et nous a livré une belle palette d’émotions. On a revécu en live un de nos albums de cœur avec Stick To Your Guns, revus nos cousins québécois de Get The Shot qui nous avaient beaucoup manqués, découvert End It et leur hardcore vindicatif et enfin vus Koyo en live pour un coup de cœur confirmé. On ne peut que vous conseiller d’aller voir ces groupes lors de prochains passages et d’aller découvrir la salle Viernulvier qui offre des conditions de live parfaites dans un cadre clairement atypique pour un concert de hardcore.

At the beginning of December, if hardcore is one of your favourite genres, Ghent was the place to be, as the Viernulvier venue put on a bill not to be missed under any circumstances. American band Stick To Your Guns are celebrating the tenth anniversary of their album Diamond! And to make the evening even more unforgettable, they’re joined by their compatriots from End It and Koyo, as well as Quebec’s Get The Shot! The venue was obviously sold out for this mosh pit-fuelled evening!

When you see the venue, you think it’s surprising to see this kind of band in a space that looks more like a ballroom. When you consider that hardcore concerts in the States can take place in brightly lit gymnasiums, you’d think the bands would be as surprised as we were.

The evening kicks off with Koyo, who take to the stage to an already packed house! Their album Would You Miss It ? was a big hit with us, so we couldn’t wait to see the band live! And from the outset we were won over by the performance of Joey Chiaramonte and his band. We started slowly to wake the audience up, but the fans were already there to sing along to the songs. The whole New York crew on stage seem delighted with the welcome the Belgians have given them and thank the audience for coming early to hear them. The band oscillate between hardcore and post-hardcore with brio, taking us through many emotions in just thirty minutes or so. On one of the tracks we’re suprised to see Adam Galindo, drummer for Stick To Your Guns, taking the mic for a nice guest apearance. The first two-steps come in fast and we’re already in for a very angry evening. The band leave the stage to rapturous applause, having won over the audience and confirmed that they are a band to keep an eye on.

Then it’s on to End It, straight from Baltimore! Aye God takes to the stage and starts off a capella, before the instruments join in for some hardcore. The only criticism is that the songs are a little too interspersed with the singer’s interventions. Obviously full of strong political messages, they are unfortunately a bit too numerous and prevent us from having more tracks on the setlist. As for the pit, it got a little livelier with the first real mosh pits of the evening. As for the music, imagine finding the best of 90s hardcore in a resolutely modern sound, with the kind of demanding tracks we love. Of course, you can’t think of Baltimore without thinking of The Wire, and you can tell from the lyrics that things haven’t changed much in the city and in the country in general since the creation of this legendary TV show. After a fast-paced set that showed us just what the band’s got, they left us having made their mark on the Belgian public too! We hope to see them again for a longer set to discover more tracks from their discography.

After a quick refreshment, we’re ready for the Get The Shot set, which we’re delighted to see again after the release of last year’s excellent Merciless Destruction. The crowd are on fire, and from the first second the slams and mosh pits start, never to stop for the whole set. The stage has a choice feature, namely a wide ledge where only Jean-Philippe Lagacé is present, allowing the more daring to do their best slams and best two steps from that spot. The title of the latest album is a perfect representation of what’s going on in the room! The sequence of tracks is perfect, letting us enjoy what the Quebec City band does best. The audience responds to the band’s requests with undisguised eagerness. It’s starting to get really hot and the pit is starting to look like a giant anthill, with everyone moving in all directions. It’s great to see one of our favourite hardcore bands back with such powerful energy. Of course, the themes are as hardcore as they come, and they don’t shy away from the gang vocals. Jean-Philippe swells his arms with a big smile on his face throughout the set, delivering an unforgettable performance, as do the musicians. By the time it was over, we knew we’d seen an anthology set, which left us hoping that Get The Shot would be back to headline in France very soon! In any case, we’ve had a perfect time with them and we’re taking a short break, delighted with the musical explosion they’ve given us.

It’s time for Stick To Your Guns‘ long-awaited set! The band take to the stage after a rousing  crowd rendition of « Take On Me ». Then it’s off to Diamond in full and in order, with of course the eponymous title at the start of the set. From the very first seconds, the party starts up again in the pit, and the smiles on the faces of the musicians on stage prove that the mood is upbeat throughout the venue. We’d seen the band at Motocultor this year, but nothing could have predicted the wave of energy we were about to witness tonight! The fans were ecstatic to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of this album and didn’t hesitate to ask Jesse Barnett for the microphone to shout out the lyrics for them, which he happily did several times. The singer was quick to point out how surprised he was that such a beautiful venue had agreed to let them play with such a fit audience in the room. The crowd took immense pleasure in shouting out the lyrics to « Against Them All », « We Still Believe » and « Beyond The Sun », all the while avoiding being crushed by the incessant pit. The slams went on and on, and the circle pits never stopped. Andrew Rose (bass), Chris Rawson (guitar), Josh James (guitar) and Adam Galindo (drums) are all in top form and deliver a performance we won’t soon forget! « Built Upon The Sand » heralds the end of the album, but there’s still time to scream the lyrics once more.

Obviously the evening wasn’t over, and the band continued with a few tracks from the rest of their discography. The legendary « Nobody » and « Married To The Noise » were greeted by gang vocals from the entire Belgian audience. Jesse thanks us for the warm welcome and for supporting them for so many years, before ending the evening in style with « Amber ». The band stay on stage for a long time to enjoy the last applause of the fans and to launch into the traditional throwing of setlists, picks and sticks. As for us, we left the venue delighted by this intense moment spent in the company of four bands so committed to their set and to this stage that was as welcoming as ever.

The evening spent in Ghent lived up to all its promises and delivered a fine array of emotions. We relived one of our favourite albums live with Stick To Your Guns, revisited our Quebec cousins Get The Shot, who we’d really missed, discovered End It and their vindictive hardcore and finally saw Koyo live for a confirmed musical crush. We can’t recommend that you go and see these bands next time you’re in town, and check out the Viernulvier venue, which offers perfect live conditions in a setting that’s clearly atypical for a hardcore concert.
