En ce 6 janvier, Sur les Cendres et le salon de tatouage Veuve Noire nous offrent non seulement une soirée post punk avec Anne Hoser Band, Sunset Motel Vacancy et Naked Soft Men mais également toute une après-midi à la Brat Cave. La salle se transforme donc dès 13h en salon de tatouage et une initiation à l’encre de Chine nous est proposée par Ekpyrosis. C’est donc après avoir découvert l’univers fleuri de Jehanne, le monde sombre de Nito et les gravures médiévales dignes de tableaux de Fleur de Guillotine (et avoir eu la force mentale de ne pas passer sous l’aiguille !) que nous nous apprêtons à assister aux concerts des trois groupes locaux de la soirée.

Anne Hoser Band a pour mission d’ouvrir la soirée, face à une salle bien remplie. On sent tout de suite que la chanteuse, qui sera la seule femme sur scène ce soir, est complètement dans son rôle sur scène. Elle saute, danse, donne vie à sa musique. Elle occupe la place centrale de ce show dans un esprit très women power. Sa voix est parfois grave, parfois plus criante et aiguë. Et même si on la remarque particulièrement, les trois musiciens ne sont pas en reste, permettant de donner un équilibre à l’ensemble. Les cœurs assurés par le bassiste offrent une certaine profondeur. On sent des influences stoner dans certains titres, au milieu d’une sonorité majoritairement garage. Et même s’il nous faut quelques titres pour rentrer dans la proposition, on finit par se prendre au jeu. On sent que l’identité visuelle du concert est travaillée. L’évolution de la chanteuse l’est également, d’abord en manteau, puis combinaison, puis avec un simple sous-pull, enlevant les couches de vêtements au fur et à mesure du set. Elle finira même ce concert à moitié démaquillée, après s’être versée une bouteille d’eau sur le visage, tout en assurant toujours le chant et le show. Le groupe quitte la scène applaudi chaleureusement par le public, dont certains étaient clairement venus pour le groupe,  chantant les refrains pendant le concert.

Place maintenant à Sunset Motel Vacancy, pour ma part découvert il y a quelques mois au Yéti. Le trio entre alors en scène prêt à nous convaincre avec son post rock/ stoner aux accents parfois psychédéliques. Les titres longs nous offrent des variations en intensité et en rythme, donnant une impression d’ondulation. Le niveau sonore de la batterie s’adapte également aux passages planants des morceaux, nous permettant de nous envoler avec le groupe. On assiste à un jeu particulièrement maîtrisé et travaillé, avec des riffs accrocheurs et des notes psychédéliques qui nous emmènent rapidement dans l’univers du groupe. On en oublie presque le bruit des aiguilles à côté de nous (car oui, les tatoueurs sont toujours au travail !). “Resilience”, titre de plus de 10 minutes, est parfaitement équilibré, ne nous lassant jamais. Sunset Motel Vacancy réussi à caser 7 titres sur ce set, certains étant présents sur leur album Ext/Nuit_ sorti en 2019, d’autres étant des compositions plus récentes. Chacun nous permet de voyager, malgré les petits problèmes de projecteur qui deviendront un running gag du concert et nous ferons bien sourire. Il ne sera donc pas étonnant que le public soit déçu lorsque le groupe annonce jouer son dernier titre. Encore une fois les applaudissements seront au rendez-vous et nul doute qu’on reverra Sunset Motel Vacancy !

Naked Soft Men s’apprête donc à clôturer cette soirée devant un public massé devant la scène. La circulation en devient difficile dans la salle tant le groupe est attendu. Des écrans à tube cathodique nous attendent sur les côtés de la scène et on a hâte de voir ce que le groupe nous réserve. Le batteur annonce le début du concert en faisant le tour de la scène, micro à la main, vêtu du plus beau short court en jean et arborant une coupe mulet du plus bel effet avant d’aller s’installer derrière les fûts. Tout cela sent l’atmosphère décalée et ce ne sont pas les favoris du guitariste qui nous convaincront du contraire ! Le chant est partagé par le batteur et le guitariste, donnant des variations intéressantes au gré des titres, le tout avec la profondeur amenée par les chœurs du bassiste. Le batteur est une espèce de personnage complètement barré, invoquant toutes les émotions extrêmes, et nous faisant vivre un show incroyable. La scène devient un espace de libération de la folie, avec une musique parfaitement contrôlée, nous amenant à nous relâcher et à vivre avec Naked Soft Men le moment présent. Le tout a lieu dans une atmosphère rétro soutenue par les images des écrans de télévision, sur lesquels on peut voir des films d’alien aux allures années 80, des écrans de veille de Windows 98, des essuis glace de phare et autres joyeusetés qu’on pensait avoir oubliées. Les morceaux sont du pur post-punk comme on l’aime, et il n’est pas étonnant de voir des dates anglaises apparaître dans les tournées du groupe. Un son de grosse caisse impressionnant résonne dans la Brat Cave, annonçant le dernier titre de la soirée, qui appelle à la danse et au pogo (et on pense très fort aux tatoueurs qui travaillent toujours à quelques mètres !). Naked Soft Men nous offrira un rappel et un slam du guitariste clôturera joyeusement ce concert dantesque.

Sur les Cendres et Veuve Noire nous ont offert une journée exceptionnelle pour commencer comme il se doit cette année 2024. Au-delà de découvrir ou soutenir les artistes musicaux locaux comme il nous tient à cœur, nous avons également découvert le travail d’artistes tatoueur.euse.s lillois.e.s. L’évènement aura été une grande réussite au vu du public nombreux ayant répondu présent. Anne Hoser Band, Sunset Motel Vacancy et Naked Soft Men évoluent dans des univers différents mais parallèles, donnant une belle unité sur la soirée. On repart conquis par cette proposition originale et avec hâte de voir quelles autres surprises nous réserve 2024 !

On the 6th of January, Sur les Cendres and the Veuve Noire tattoo parlour are not only offering a post-punk evening with Anne Hoser Band, Sunset Motel Vacancy and Naked Soft Men, but also a whole afternoon at La Brat Cave. From 1pm, the venue was transformed into a tattoo parlour, with Ekpyrosis offering an introduction to Indian ink. After discovering the floral world of Jehanne, the dark world of Nito and the medieval engravings worthy of paintings by Fleur de Guillotine (and having had the mental strength not to go under the needle!), we got ready to attend the concerts by the evening’s three local bands.

Anne Hoser Band opened the evening in front of a packed house. You can tell straight away that the singer, who will be the only woman on stage this evening, is completely in her role on stage. She jumps, she dances, she brings her music to life. She takes centre stage in a very women power kind of way. Her voice is sometimes deep, sometimes shrill and high-pitched. And even though she’s particularly noticeable, the three musicians are not to be outdone, giving balance to the whole. The bassist’s backing vocals add a certain depth. There are stoner influences in some of the tracks, amidst a predominantly garage sound. And even if it takes a few tracks to get into the band’s sound, you end up getting hooked. You can feel that the visual identity of the concert has been worked on. The singer’s evolution was also well thought out, first in a coat, then a jumpsuit, then a simple undershirt, removing layers of clothing as the set progressed. She even finished the concert with her make-up half off, after pouring a bottle of water over her face, while still singing and performing. The band left the stage to warm applause from the audience, some of whom had clearly come for the band, singing along to the choruses during the concert.

Next up is Sunset Motel Vacancy, who I discovered a few months ago at Le Yéti. The trio take to the stage ready to convince us with their post rock/ stoner sound, sometimes with psychedelic overtones. The long tracks offer us variations in intensity and rhythm, giving an impression of undulation. The sound level of the drums also adapts to the soaring passages of the tracks, allowing us to soar along with the band. The drumming is particularly masterful, with catchy riffs and psychedelic notes that quickly take us into the band’s universe. You almost forget the sound of the needles next to you (because yes, the tattoo artists are still at work!). « Resilience », a track lasting over 10 minutes, is perfectly balanced, never tiring. Sunset Motel Vacancy managed to squeeze 7 tracks into this set, some of them from their 2019 album Ext/Nuit_, others more recent compositions. Each one takes us on a journey, despite the little problems with the projector that become a running gag during the concert and put a smile on our faces. Not surprisingly, the audience was disappointed when the band announced that they were playing their last song. Once again, the applause will be there and there’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing Sunset Motel Vacancy again!

Naked Soft Men are about to close the evening in front of a packed audience. The band are so eagerly awaited that it’s hard to get around the venue. CRT screens awaited us on the sides of the stage and we couldn’t wait to see what the band had in store for us. The drummer announces the start of the concert by walking around the stage, microphone in hand, dressed in the finest short denim shorts and sporting a mullet cut to great effect before settling down behind the drums. The whole thing smacks of a quirky atmosphere, and the guitarist’s favourites won’t convince us otherwise! The vocals are shared by the drummer and guitarist, giving interesting variations to the tracks, all with the depth provided by the bassist’s backing vocals. The drummer is a kind of crazy character, conjuring up all kinds of extreme emotions and putting on an incredible show. The stage becomes a space for the release of madness, with perfectly controlled music leading us to relax and live with Naked Soft Men in the moment. The whole thing takes place in a retro atmosphere underpinned by the images on the TV screens, which show 80s-style alien films, Windows 98 screensavers, lighthouse windscreens and other gems you thought you’d forgotten. The songs are pure post-punk, just the way we like it, and it’s no surprise to see UK dates popping up on the band’s tours. An impressive bass drum sound echoes through the Brat Cave, heralding the final track of the evening, which calls for dancing and pogoing (and we’re thinking very loudly of the tattoo artists who are always working just a few metres away!) Naked Soft Men offer an encore and a slam by the guitarist brings this Dantesque concert to a joyous close.

Sur les Cendres and Veuve Noire offered us an exceptional day to kick off 2024 in style. As well as discovering and supporting local musical artists, as is important to us, we also discovered the work of tattoo artists from Lille. The event was a great success, given the large turnout. Anne Hoser Band, Sunset Motel Vacancy and Naked Soft Men moved in different but parallel universes, giving a nice unity to the evening. We went away won over by this original proposition and can’t wait to see what other surprises 2024 has in store for us!
