On entame la soirée avec God Against Humanity qui fait son entrée sur scène sur une bande sont là pour poser une ambiance sombre et oppressante, avant d’entamer un set marqué par les sonorités death / black metal froides et lacérantes. Les musiciens proposent des morceaux comprenant des rythmiques entêtantes, une batterie lourde et un chant quasi exclusivement growlé de bonne facture. Le son est massif et la configuration de The Black Lab rend justice au travail des musiciens, même si on notera des morceaux relativement semblables et répétitifs au fur et à mesure du set. Exception : un morceau vers la fin du set propose une intro assez mélodique et calme, avec un groove particulièrement intéressant, mais qui sera vite abandonné pour repartir vers des sonorités lourdes et sombres ne me permettant pas d’entrer dans le show, étant plutôt à l’opposé des productions que j’ai l’habitude d’écouter, mais ayant l’air de satisfaire un public qui semble conquis par la performance !

Au tour de The Velvet Roses de monter une nouvelle fois sur la scène de The Black Lab (la première fois étant en 2021 aux côtés de Floyd Coffin et Marigold). Le groupe nous propose un son à mi chemin entre grunge et metal alternatif, intégrant aussi des éléments de stoner et de hard rock dans leur son. On prend plaisir à écouter des titres comme “Kill You”, “Addict”, et “Never Fear Inside” qu’on reprendra en chœurs avec Bad Drunk (guitariste) et Guillaume (basse) qui n’hésitent pas à donner de la voix. On retrouve d’ailleurs Guillaume à de nombreuses reprises en train de taquiner la foule et à la solliciter pour les chœurs, ce qui nous permettra vraiment de nous investir dans la prestation. Tom propose des riffs et solos de guitare variés, n’hésitant pas à inclure un passage au bottleneck sur l’intro du dernier morceau du set “Blind”. En rappel, on retrouve un classique de Nirvana avec “School”, où Guillaume vient jouer directement dans le public en courant d’un bout à l’autre de la salle.

Cette soirée aux sonorités variées aura eu le mérite de faire découvrir deux formations locales au public présent. Des ambiances sombres du black / death metal aux ambiances torturées du grunge, la soirée était bien évidemment un terrain idéal pour les amateurs de gros son sous toutes ses formes ! Merci à The Black Lab de permettre aux formations locales de s’exprimer et de jouer dans de bonnes conditions en étant accompagnés par son équipe de professionnels ! 

The Black Lab makes it a point of honour to showcase the local scene by giving the region’s various bands the chance to perform through its ‘The Good, The Bad & The Local’ programmes. In 2023, forty-eight groups were able to take to one of our favourite stages. This year’s programme continues, with the melodic blackened death metal band God Against Humanity and grunge/alternative metal band The Velvet Roses taking to the stage on this 30th of January.

The evening kicks off with God Against Humanity, who take to the stage with a tape to set a dark, oppressive mood, before beginning a set marked by cold, lacerating death/black metal sounds. The musicians deliver tracks with heady rhythms, heavy drums and vocals that are almost exclusively growled. The sound is massive and the configuration of The Black Lab does justice to the musicians’ work, even if the tracks are relatively similar and repetitive as the set progresses. The one exception was a track towards the end of the set which featured a fairly melodic and calm intro with a particularly interesting groove, but which was quickly abandoned in favour of heavy, dark sounds that didn’t really get me into the show, being rather the opposite of what I’m used to listening to, but which seemed to satisfy an audience that seemed won over by the performance!

It’s The Velvet Roses‘ turn to take to The Black Lab stage once again (the first time being in 2021 alongside Floyd Coffin and Marigold). The band’s sound is somewhere between grunge and alternative metal, with elements of stoner and hard rock thrown in for good measure. We enjoy listening to tracks like ‘Kill You’, ‘Addict’ and ‘Never Fear Inside’, which we sing along to with Bad Drunk (guitar) and Guillaume (bass), who don’t hesitate to give their all. Guillaume can be found teasing the crowd on numerous occasions, calling on them for backing vocals, giving us a real chance to get involved in the performance. Tom delivers a variety of guitar riffs and solos, not hesitating to include a bottleneck passage on the intro to the final track of the set, ‘Blind’. The encore featured a Nirvana classic, ‘School’, where Guillaume ran from one end of the room to the other, playing directly into the audience.

This evening of varied sounds had the merit of introducing two local bands to the audience. From the dark ambiences of black/death metal to the tortured atmospheres of grunge, the evening was obviously an ideal venue for fans of big sound in all its forms! Thank you to The Black Lab for giving local bands the chance to express themselves and play in the right conditions with the support of its team of professionals!
