Après un changement de line up qui a vu l’arrivée de Joel Hoesktra (Whitesnake, ex-Night Ranger) à la guitare et Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, ex-Dokken) à la basse, Revolution Saints a sorti Eagle Flight en 2023, et fort de ce succès, le groupe mené par Deen Castronovo (plus connu pour son travail à la batterie avec Journey et pour ses apparitions sur certains albums d’Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Fear Factory…) propose un nouvel album avec Against The Winds, à paraître le 9 février prochain chez Frontiers Records.

On retrouve en introduction d’album le single et morceau éponyme “Against The Winds” qui nous présente les capacités vocales exceptionnelles de Deen Castronovo. Le morceau est un condensé de tout ce qui se fait de mieux en classic rock, avec des mélodies de guitares très présentes jouées par Joel Hoesktra et secondées à merveille par les nappes de synthés d’Alessandro Del Vecchio. On retrouve le jeu très distinctif de Joel Hoesktra sur le solo du morceau, et les choeurs nous amènent directement dans les 80s ! “Changing My Mind” apporte un côté léger et qui touche droit aux émotions, à grand renfort de synthé très présent en interprétant le thème principal sur lequel se calle le reste des instruments. Pour un côté plus heavy, on est aussi servi avec “Fall On My Knees” qui, grâce à son tempo plus soutenu, nous permet de remuer allègrement la tête et de scander le refrain bien fort !
Avance rapide jusqu’à mon coup de cœur de l’album, “Will I See You Again” qui, avec son intro guitare / synthé ravageuse m’a directement interpellé. Les riffs de guitares sont originaux et les synthés ne sont pas en reste, terrain parfait pour que la voix puisse s’exprimer de manière puissante, mais toujours d’une manière extrêmement mélodieuse. “Show Me Your Light” se veut plus calme que le morceau précédent, et ira me rappeler par égard certaines orchestrations que l’on peut retrouver chez Myrath (“Endure The Silence” en tête), la voix est ici plus rauque et monte moins dans les aigus sur les premiers couplets, mais on assiste à une véritable montée en puissance de la voix au fur et à mesure du morceau, preuve des capacités vocales de Deen Castronovo. En dernier morceau de l’album, on retrouve “No Turning Back” qui fait écho au premier morceau de l’album en proposant un album à la croisée des chemins entre classic rock, heavy avec quelques éléments de prog sur les synthés.
Avec ce cinquième album (et deuxième avec le lineup actuel), Revolution Saints propose des morceaux variés avec pour pièce maîtresse la voix très versatile de Deen Castronovo. Le travail de Joel Hoesktra et d’Alessandro Del Vecchio pour apporter des ambiances et des mélodies riches et diversifiées permet d’obtenir un tout très rafraîchissant et qualitatif. Pour tous les fans de classic rock, mais aussi de formations plus récentes comme Girish and The Chronicles n’hésitant pas à amener des éléments du métal progressif, je n’aurais qu’un conseil : procurez vous l’album de toute urgence !

After a line-up change that saw the arrival of Joel Hoesktra (Whitesnake, ex-Night Ranger) on guitar and Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, ex-Dokken) on bass, Revolution Saints released Eagle Flight in 2023, and on the strength of this success, the band led by Deen Castronovo (best known for his work on drums with Journey and for appearances on albums by Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Fear Factory… ) are back with Against The Winds, due out on 9 February on Frontiers Records.
The album opens with the eponymous single ‘Against The Winds’, which showcases Deen Castronovo‘s exceptional vocal skills. The track is a compendium of the very best in classic rock, with Joel Hoesktra‘s guitar melodies at the forefront and Alessandro Del Vecchio‘s layers of synthesizers providing the perfect backdrop. Joel Hoesktra‘s distinctive playing can be heard on the track’s solo, and the backing vocals take us straight back to the 80s! « Changing My Mind » has a lighter, more emotional feel to it, with a strong synth presence on the main theme, which is echoed by the rest of the instruments. For a heavier side, we’re also treated to « Fall On My Knees » which, thanks to its faster tempo, gets us shaking our heads and chanting the chorus loudly!
Fast-forward to my favourite track of the album, « Will I See You Again », which, with its devastating guitar/synth intro, immediately appealed to me. The guitar riffs are original and the synths are not to be outdone, providing the perfect backdrop for the vocals to express themselves powerfully, but always in an extremely melodic way. « Show Me Your Light » is calmer than the previous track, and reminds me of some of the orchestrations found on Myrath (« Endure The Silence » in particular). The voice is huskier and less high-pitched on the first verses, but it really comes into its own as the track progresses, proving Deen Castronovo‘s vocal abilities. The final track on the album is ‘No Turning Back’, which echoes the first track on the album, offering an album at the crossroads between classic rock and heavy metal, with a few prog elements on the synths.
On this, their fifth album (and second with the current line-up), Revolution Saints offer a variety of tracks, with Deen Castronovo‘s highly versatile voice at their centrepiece. The work of Joel Hoesktra and Alessandro Del Vecchio in creating rich, diverse atmospheres and melodies makes for a refreshingly high-quality whole. For all fans of classic rock, but also of more recent bands such as Girish and The Chronicles who don’t hesitate to bring in elements of progressive metal, I have just one piece of advice: get your hands on this album as a matter of urgency!
