L’an dernier nous découvrions A Burial At Sea lors de leur passage au Grand Mix de Tourcoing en ouverture de And So I Watch You From Afar. Une signature chez Pelagic Records plus tard, les irlandais désormais basés en Angleterre nous proposent de découvrir leur nouvel album. Intitulé Close To Home, il sera disponible le 23 février prochain.

Les violons nous accueillent dans le titre « páirc béal uisce » avant que les guitares ne viennent nous emporter loin, très loin. Dès la première minute de ce morceau on retrouve tout ce qui fait le charme de cette formation, un post rock aux ambiances très travaillé, où les sonorités en fond ne font que renforcer les émotions d’une musique qui en regorge déjà. La suite de l’album ne fait que confirmer que les compositions de Patrick Blaney et Dara Tohill ne font que gagner en puissance dans cette nouvelle sortie. Les instruments utilisés sont nombreux et apportent chacun une force d’évasion supplémentaire. Parfois le groupe sort du post rock pur et s’oriente vers des sonorités tintées de math rock ou même de jazz, comme sur l’ultime morceau de ce disque « DALL ».

L’aventure musicale est totale et nous laisse profiter pleinement du talent de la formation irlandaise. « GORSE BUSH ON FIRE » est un véritable chef d’œuvre qui ne laissera personne indifférent pendant les concerts, autant que « down on the floor » nous donne envie de nous remuer et autant dire que ce genre de nous en a pas donner l’habitude. Les cuivres sont présents dans de nombreux titres et apportent eux aussi un supplément d’âme à ces compositions déjà si puissantes.

Sans jamais tomber dans la redite, cet album nous livre des univers variés qui laissent nos âmes vagabonder aux sons toujours prenants à souhaits et souvent très entraînants proposés ici. On vous laisse par exemple vous passer en boucle le loop de guitare de « Hy-Brasil » qui couplé à un son de trompette nous amène tout droit chez nos amis d’Amérique du Sud. L’autre véritable pépite de cet album sera le titre « masterfred » et ses sonorités plus douces qui rendent un vibrant hommage au père de Dara Tohill (Fred étant son nom).

Avec Close To Home, A Burial At Sea livrent un album qui livre ce que le post rock a de meilleur, tout en s’en affranchissant avec aisance pour nous proposer un album qui se démarque des autres groupes du genre, avec des sons qui leurs sont propres et qui nous font définitivement voyager dans un univers qui finit par nous être très familier. On vous encourage vivement l’écoute et on vous invite à retrouver le groupe en live dès que possible, avec des passages à Lille le 17 mai et à Paris le 19 mai.

Last year we discovered A Burial At Sea when they played at Le Grand Mix in Tourcoing, opening for And So I Watch You From Afar. Signed to Pelagic Records one year later, the Irish band now based in the UK are back with a new album. Entitled Close To Home, it will be available on the 23rd of February.

Violins greet us on the track « páirc béal uisce » before the guitars take us far, far away. From the very first minute of this track, we find everything that makes this band so charming, a post rock with a very elaborate atmosphere, where the background sounds only reinforce the emotions of a music that is already full of them. The rest of the album only confirms that Patrick Blaney and Dara Tohill‘s compositions are only getting stronger on this new release. They use a wide range of instruments, each of which adds an extra element of escapism. At times, the band veers away from pure post rock and towards sounds tinged with math rock or even jazz, as on the final track on this album, « DALL ».

The musical adventure is total, and lets us take full advantage of the talent of the Irish band. « GORSE BUSH ON FIRE » is a real masterpiece that will leave no one indifferent during the concerts, just as « down on the floor » makes us want to get moving, and it’s fair to say that we’re not used to this genre. The horns are present on many of the tracks, adding an extra touch of soul to these already powerful compositions.

Without ever repeating the same thing, this album offers us a variety of worlds that let our souls wander to the sounds that are always as catchy as you like and often very catchy. We’ll let you loop the guitar loop on « Hy-Brasil », for example, which, coupled with a trumpet sound, takes us straight to our friends in South America. The other real nugget on this album is the track ‘masterfred’, with its lower tones that pay a beautiful tribute to Dara Tohill‘s father (Fred being his name).

With Close To Home, A Burial At Sea deliver an album that brings out the very best of post rock, while breaking away from it with ease to offer us an album that stands out from other bands in the genre, with sounds that are all their own and that definitely take us on a journey into a universe that ends up being very familiar. We urge you to give it a listen, and look out for the band live as soon as possible, with dates in Lille on May 17th  and Paris on May 19th.
