En ce jour spécial de février, nous repartons vers l’Aéronef pour y retrouver le groupe qui nous a servi un des plus beaux albums de ce début d’année, Slift! C’est en pleine tournée pour promouvoir Ilion que le groupe s’arrête dans une de nos salles favorites pour une soirée qui s’annonce déjà comme époustouflante! Pour les accompagner sur cette date ils ont choisi les américains de Hooveriii et leur psych kraut rock. C’est parti pour un soirée dans l’espace!

La soirée commence donc avec la découverte de Hooveriii, venus tout droit de Los Angeles! D’entrée les américains nous présentent un mélange musical étonnant et détonnant qui conquiert une large partie du public en quelques instants. Bien évidemment le groupe nous met en avant les morceaux de son album Pointe sorti en octobre dernier, et autant vous dire qu’on prend très vite la mesure du talent du combo. Mais ils n’oublient évidemment pas les autres titres comme « Control » ou « Bird On A Wire » qui laissent entrevoir l’évolution de leur musique au fil de leur carrière. L’ensemble guitares, basse, claviers, batterie et chant est excellent et nous livre nos premiers frissons de la soirée. On navigue petit à petit dans l’univers des américains, qu’on découvre avec grand plaisir, et chaque nouveau titre laisse vagabonder nos esprits un peu plus. Leur prestation en plus d’être très bien accueillie par le public bénéficie d’un silence dans la salle qui permet de profiter pleinement de chaque note, un pur plaisir! Le groupe n’hésite d’ailleurs pas à remercier le public d’être venu si nombreux les écouter et promettent de revenir rapidement nous voir. Après un dernier titre, « Gone », tout aussi convaincant que le reste et blindé de sonorités bien psyché, le groupe quitte la scène très largement applaudi par un public totalement conquis!
C’est parti pour le tant attendu set des toulousains de Slift! Un grand écran trône en fond de scène et commence à nous afficher de beaux visuels pendant que les trois musiciens s’installent derrière leurs instruments. Le groupe commence très fort avec « Ilion », morceau titre du dernier album en date. En quelques secondes nous voilà embarqués avec le trio dans l’espace dans une Aéronef qui n’a jamais aussi bien porté son nom! Force est de constater qu’ils ne font pas dans la demi-mesure tant chaque note est jouée avec une conviction folle qui nous laisse pantois d’admiration. Les frères Jean et Rémi Fossat à la guitare et à la basse nous livrent des riffs et rythmiques absolument imparables qui nous emportent totalement. Et que dire de Canek Flores et de son jeu de batterie indescriptible, on a clairement devant nous un des batteurs les plus étonnants qu’on a pu voir sur scène!
Le public totalement médusé par la performance des trois toulousains se laisse porter par le son et les images sur scène, et voient arriver avec grand plaisir « Ummon », morceau tiré de l’album du même nom et rapidement devenu un classique du rock psyché! Les yeux se ferment parfois pour s’encrer un peu plus dans ce que les trois musiciens nous offrent ce soir. Chaque morceau prends le temps, installe son ambiance avec toujours ces magnifiques visuels sur le fond de la scène, et nous fait voyager aux confins du cosmos de la plus belle des manières. La soirée se poursuit avec la merveille qu’est « Weavers’ Weft » et ses sonorités space psych si entêtantes. Tout au long du set Jean nous enchante avec sa voix puissante souvent rejoint par Rémi pour des chœurs toujours plus prenants.
Le groupe continue d’alterner entre les albums Ummon et Ilion, et c’est d’ailleurs avec « Altitude Lake » que nous reviendrons vers le précédent album de la formation. Nous voilà au sommet d’un massif montagneux en train de regarder les étoiles au bord de l’eau, car oui la musique de Slift est une ode au rêve éveillé et au voyage de l’âme. Le trio est au sommet de son art et nous le prouve une fois de plus avec « Lions, Tigers And Bears » avant de nous laisser sur la merveille auditive qu’est « The Story That Has Never Been Told ». Dernière occasion pour le trio de Toulouse de livrer un rock puissant et habité qui nous transporte et nous émeut au plus haut point! C’est sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements que le trio quitte la scène visiblement ravi par l’accueil du public lillois.
Ce fut une soirée où les qualificatifs nous manquent pour vous parler de la qualité du set servi par les toulousains de Slift, et de notre ressenti sur cette performance. On se doutait que les morceaux d’Ilion allaient nous faire partir loin mais pas à ce point là! Nous avons eu ce soir en face de nous un groupe totalement en phase avec sa musique et son public et qui a montré une fois de plus que la scène Française mérite toujours plus notre attention tant elle regorge de talents encore trop peu mis en avant chez nous. On ne manquera la prochaine rencontre avec les toulousains pour rien au monde, et on rentre chez nous avec des étoiles dans les yeux et le cœur comblé par la performance unique à la quelle on a pu assisté.

On this special day in February, we’re heading back to L’Aéronef to catch up with the band who gave us one of the finest albums of the start of the year, Slift! In the midst of a tour to promote Ilion, the band are stopping off at one of our favourite venues for what promises to be a breathtaking evening! To accompany them on this date they’ve chosen the Americans of Hooveriii and their psych kraut rock. Let’s get ready for an evening in space!

The evening kicks off with the discovery of Hooveriii, straight from Los Angeles! From the outset, the Americans presented a surprising and explosive musical mix that won over a large part of the audience in a matter of moments. Naturally, the band played tracks from their album Pointe, released last October, and it was easy to see how talented they were. But of course they don’t forget other tracks like ‘Control’ and ‘Bird On A Wire’, which give a glimpse of how their music has evolved over the course of their career. The combination of guitars, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals is excellent, giving us our first thrills of the evening. Little by little, we’re drawn into the world of the Americans, who we’re discovering with great pleasure, and each new track leaves our minds wandering a little more. As well as being very well received by the audience, their performance was blessed with a silence in the room that allowed you to fully enjoy every note – pure pleasure! The band were quick to thank the audience for coming out in such numbers, and promised to be back soon. After a final track, ‘Gone’, just as convincing as the rest and packed with psychedelic sounds, the band left the stage to rapturous applause from an audience that had been totally won over!
It’s time for the long-awaited set from Toulouse’s Slift! A big screen takes pride of place at the back of the stage and begins to display some beautiful visuals as the three musicians settle in behind their instruments. The band get things off to a flying start with ‘Ilion’, the title track from their latest album. In a matter of seconds we’re whisked away with the trio into space in an Aeronef that has never been so aptly named! There’s no denying that they don’t do things by halves: every note is played with a wild conviction that leaves us breathless with admiration. Brothers Jean and Rémi Fossat on guitar and bass deliver absolutely unstoppable riffs and rhythms that sweep us off our feet. And what can we say about Canek Flores and his indescribable drumming? We’re clearly looking at one of the most amazing drummers we’ve ever seen on stage!
The audience, totally mesmerised by the performance of the three Toulouse-based musicians, let themselves be carried away by the sound and images on stage, and were delighted to see the arrival of « Ummon », a track from the album of the same name which has rapidly become a psychedelic rock classic! At times, you close your eyes to take in a little more of what the three musicians have to offer this evening. Each track takes its time, setting the mood with the magnificent visuals at the back of the stage, and taking us on a journey to the farthest reaches of the cosmos in the most beautiful of ways. The evening continues with the marvellous ‘Weavers’ Weft’ and its heady space psych sounds. Throughout the set, Jean enchanted us with his powerful voice, often joined by Rémi for his ever more captivating backing vocals.
The band continue to alternate between their Ummon and Ilion albums, and it’s with ‘Altitude Lake’ that we return to the band’s previous album. Here we are at the top of a mountain range, gazing at the stars by the water’s edge, because yes, Slift’s music is an ode to daydreaming and the journey of the soul. The trio are at the top of their game, and prove it once again with ‘Lions, Tigers And Bears’ before leaving us with the aural marvel that is ‘The Story That Has Never Been Told’. This is the last opportunity for the Toulouse trio to deliver a powerful, emotionally-charged rock album that transports and moves us to the very core! The trio left the stage to thunderous applause, clearly delighted by the welcome they had received from the Lille crowd.
It was an evening we can’t even begin to describe in terms of the quality of the set put on by Slift , and how we felt about their performance. We suspected that Ilion‘s songs would take us far afield, but not to this extent! What we had in front of us this evening was a band totally in tune with their music and their audience, and who showed once again that the French scene deserves more and more of our attention, as it’s full of talent that is still too little promoted in France. We wouldn’t miss our next encounter with the Toulouse-based band for the world, and we’ll be going home with stars in our eyes and our hearts filled by the unique performance we witnessed.
