Après le virage entrepris par Not Scientists avec Staring at the Sun et sa touche new wave synthétique, le groupe a décidé de poursuivre dans cette voie et nous propose un nouvel EP intitulé Staring At The Moon. Celui-ci contient 4 titres inédits et 4 titres live issus de l’album précédent, enregistrés à l’occasion de le Kicking Night au Ninkasi de Lyon le 12 avril dernier. L’occasion pour le groupe de fournir encore un peu plus de matière pour fêter leurs 10 ans de carrière (bien plus pour les membres qui le constituent, issus de groupes tels que Uncommonmenfrommars), notamment lors de certaines dates de la Tournée du Siècle qui vient de débuter.

Dès les premières notes de « Spit It Out », on retrouve l’énergie communicative de Not Scientists et leur touche si personnelle. On retrouve cette sonorité familière avec plaisir, le titre étant plutôt teinté d’ondes positives. « Fasten your Seatbelts » (Attachez vos ceintures en français) porte particulièrement bien son nom. En effet, le tempo s’accélère sur ce titre. La voix de Ed nous accompagne dans cette folle épopée. On ressent toujours le très bon punk rock qui est la racine du groupe, avec le petit plus, une espèce de « Not Scientists Touch ». On sent que les musiciens ont roulé leur bosse, et allient désormais leurs différentes influences dans un savant mélange bien dosé. Avec « Brace For Impact », on retrouve davantage l’apport de la new wave. On entend plus de reverb sur la voix et la répétition de la phrase « I think I can Do It » nous hypnotise et nous embarque dans leur univers si spécifique. On arrive rapidement au dernier titre inédit de cet EP. L’introduction de « Unverified » rappelle vaguement les sonorités de certains titres de Golden Staples album de 2018, notamment « Perfect World ». Le morceau se veut plus sombre, plus froid, avec un synthé plus présent. Il est par certains égards presque mélancolique. Tout le monde le sait, la musique a une résonance personnelle et à mon sens ce titre est celui qui fait le plus le lien entre tous les albums et toutes les influences de Not Scientists.
On passe ensuite à la Face B, comprenant quatre titres live. On démarre tranquillement par « Push » et sa force tranquille, qui monte crescendo. On assiste ensuite auditivement à « Like Gods We Feast » qui laisse sur cette version live, une belle place à la voix de Ed. Celle-ci est toujours soutenue par la justesse et la mélodie des compositions. La longue outro du titre révèle magnifiquement toutes les nouvelles sonorités du groupe, alliées avec leurs bases solides toujours présentes. « Rattlesnake » nous présente une introduction bien plus agressive et rythmée, toujours en alliance avec cette voix, ici très énergique. On imagine bien le public bouger allègrement devant la scène. On termine cette expérience live par « %8×5 » et le phrasé concis et carré de Ed. Le titre conclut parfaitement l’écoute, à la fois agressif, entraînant et mélodique, nous démontrant une fois encore le talent de Not Scientists.
Not Scientists nous offre ici quatre titres qui assoient leur virage vers d’autres influences. Le groupe n’en reste pas moins un groupe de punk-rock solide qui ravira ses fans, mais avec ce petit truc en plus qui leur permet d’avoir un son vraiment unique et de moins rentrer dans une seule case. Et à la qualité de leur son live, nul doute qu’on les reverra traîner sur nos scènes et qu’on répondra présent !

After the turn taken by Not Scientists with Staring at the Sun and its synthetic new wave touch, the band has decided to continue in this direction and is now offering us a new EP entitled Staring At The Moon. It contains 4 previously unreleased tracks and 4 live tracks from the previous album, recorded during Kicking Night at the Ninkasi in Lyon on 12 April. It’s an opportunity for the band to provide a little more material to celebrate their 10-year career (and a lot more for the members of the band, who come from bands such as Uncommonmenfrommars), particularly on some of the dates of the Tournée du Siècle, which has just begun.

From the very first notes of ‘Spit It Out’, Not Scientists‘ infectious energy and personal touch is back. It’s a pleasure to hear that familiar sound again, the track being tinged with positive vibes. « Fasten your Seatbelts » is particularly aptly named. The tempo picks up on this track. Ed’s voice accompanies us on this epic journey. You can still feel the excellent punk rock that is the band’s roots, with the added bonus of a sort of ‘Not Scientists Touch’. It’s clear that the musicians have come a long way, and now combine their different influences in a well-balanced blend. With ‘Brace For Impact’, there’s more of a new wave feel. There’s more reverb on the vocals, and the repetition of the phrase « I think I can Do It » hypnotises us and draws us into their distinctive world. It’s not long before we get to the last track on the EP. The introduction to ‘Unverified’ is vaguely reminiscent of some of the tracks on Golden Staples’ 2018 album, notably ‘Perfect World’. The track is darker, colder, with a more present synth. In some ways, it’s almost melancholy. As everyone knows, music has a personal resonance, and in my opinion this track is the one that most links all the Not Scientists albums and influences.
We then move on to Side B, featuring four live tracks. Push’ kicks things off quietly, with its quiet strength rising to a crescendo. Then comes ‘Like Gods We Feast’, a live version that gives Ed‘s voice pride of place, supported as always by the accuracy and melody of the compositions. The track’s long outro beautifully reveals all the band’s new sounds, combined with their ever-present solid foundations. « Rattlesnake’ is a much more aggressive and rhythmic introduction, still in alliance with the band’s vocals, which are very energetic here. You can just imagine the audience moving wildly in front of the stage. The live experience comes to a close with ‘%8×5’, featuring Ed‘s concise, square phrasing, a track that brings the listening experience to a perfect close: aggressive, catchy and melodic, once again demonstrating the talent of Not Scientists.
Not Scientists offer us four tracks here that consolidate their turn towards other influences. The band are still a solid punk-rock outfit who will delight their fans, but with that little extra something that allows them to have a truly unique sound and fit less into a single box. And given the quality of their live sound, there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing them on our stages again, and we’ll be there!
