Avec leur tournée déjà complète au mois d’août en Australie, Alpha Wolf est de retour et plus que prêt à nous partager leur troisième album. Le groupe de metalcore sortira le 5 avril leur nouvel opus énergique et puissant intitulé Half Living Things via Greyscale Records et SharpTone Records.

Le début de l’album nous plonge directement dans le vif du sujet avec « Bring Back The Noise », dévoilé à la fin de l’année dernière, bien avant l’annonce de Half Living Things. Nous espérons que vous êtes prêt pour d’importants riffs de guitare et une batterie frénétique car Alpha Wolf ne vous décevra pas sur ce point ! Leur tempo ne fait qu’augmenter avec « Double-Edge Demise » où l’on peut entendre « Tic Toc Tic Toc Tic Toc Tic Boom » qui semble presser le temps. Des guitares saturées sont également présentes sur chaque morceau et nous ne pouvons pas oublier de mentionner la seule collaboration de cet album. C’est sur la chanson « Suck 2 Suck » que le groupe a invité le leader de Body Count. Ice-T apparaît juste avant le troisième acte de cette chanson pour poser son message : « You coming for me? You gotta come better than that!« , prenant clairement le temps de s’imposer et permettant ainsi à chacun d’entendre ce qu’il a à dire. À propos de cette chanson, Lochie Keogh (chanteur) a révélé : « C’est une réponse à quiconque dit que vous n’avez pas travaillé dur pour ce que vous avez. Si vous aviez l’éthique et la ténacité, vous l’auriez aussi, mais vous êtes mauvais donc vous ne l’avez pas. »

Juste après cette collaboration, nous sommes projetés dans une autre atmosphère, avec un morceau plus calme et plus émotionnel. « Whenever You’re Ready » est un morceau plus mélodique où nous pouvons apprécier un peu plus de voix claires. La mélodie donnée par les instruments semble assez lointaine, nous permettant d’apprécier les paroles. Le pré-refrain et le refrain nous captivent dès la première écoute et vous serez assez vite prêt à chanter le reste de la chanson. Après cette courte pause, nous retournons aux riffs puissants et aux sons frénétiques d’Alpha Wolf. Chacune des chansons suivantes permet de construire la tension de différentes manières. « Pretty Boy » apporte plus de refrains chantés avec le support de John Arnold au chant, « A Terrible Day For Rain » délivre son énergie brute avec les growls de Lochie. Tout cela se termine avec le titre éponyme « Half Living Things », commençant par un moment instrumental et laissant plus de place à la voix pendant la chanson.

Pour clore cet album, le dernier titre est « Ambivalence ». Le début nous rappelle du post-rock, avec des notes de guitare lointaines permettant de faire monté la pression, avant l’explosion. Cette chanson se trouve être dans la continuité de « Whenever You’re Ready » en étant plus mélodique. Bizarrement, elle est plus calme que de nombreux titres de Half Living Things mais elle semble aussi plus puissante, principalement lorsque nous pouvons clairement entendre des phrases comme « I don’t wanna be alone« . « Ambivalence » nous montre une fois de plus qu’Alpha Wolf ne nous partagera pas seulement des chansons brutales mais saura aussi maîtriser des morceaux plus émotionnels et doux. Ce dernier titre se termine sur des notes éparses et lointaines. L’album se clôt donc avec douceur, ce qui contraste avec le début qui était plus brutal et nous plongeait directement dans l’univers du groupe.

Half Living Things marque le retour après quatre ans d’Alpha Wolf, et cela ne passera pas inaperçu. Avec ce troisième album, le groupe partage avec nous leurs sons qui par habitude sont fort et puissants, cependant ils sont probablement davantage sorti de leur zone de confort avec des mélodies plus douces voir plus chanté. Allumez le son et soyez prêt pour des hochements de tête ainsi que des moments émotionnels avec ce tout nouvel enregistrement.

With their already sold out tour for August in Australia Alpha Wolf is more than back and ready to share with us their third album. The metalcore band will release on April 5th their energetic and powerful new record entitled Half Living Things via Greyscale Records and SharpTone Records.

The beginning of the album takes us directly into the matter with “Bring Back The Noise” that was released at the end of last year, before the announcement of Half Living Things. I hope you are ready for big guitar riffs and frenetic drums because Alpha Wolf won’t disappoint you with that! Their tempo is only increasing with “Double-Edge Demise” where we can hear « Tic Toc Tic Toc Tic Toc Tic Boom » urging the time. Saturated guitars are also present on every track and we can’t forget to mention the only featuring of this album. It is on the song “Suck 2 Suck” with no one else than Body Count’s frontman. Ice-T appears right before the third act of the song to state his message: “You coming for me? You gotta come better than that!”, clearly reclaiming his space allowing everyone to hear what he has to say. About this song, Lochie Keogh (lead vocals) revealed “It’s about biting back at anyone saying you didn’t work hard for the shit you have. If you had the ethic and tenacity, you’d have it too, but you suck so you don’t.”

Right after this featuring, we are projected in another atmosphere, with a track that is calmer and more emotional. “Whenever You’re Ready” is a more melodic song where we can appreciate some clear vocals. The melody given by the instruments seems quite distant, letting us appreciate the lyrics. The entire pre-chorus and chorus catches us from the first hearing and you’ll already be ready to sing along for the rest of the song. After this little break we are going back to Alpha Wolf’s powerful riffs and sounds. Each of the following songs allows to build up the tension in different ways. “Pretty Boy” brings more singing chorus with the backing vocals of John Arnold, “A Terrible Day For Rain” delivers its raw energy with Lochie growls. All this comes to an end with the eponym title “Half Living Things”, starting with an instrumental moment and letting more place to the voice during the song.

To close this album, the last title is “Ambivalence”. Its beginning reminds us of post-rock genre, with far-away guitar notes building up the pressure, before the explosion. This song joins “Whenever You’re Ready” in its style as it is more melodic. Weirdl,y it’s calmer than many titles of Half Living Things but it also feels heavier, mainly when we can clearly hear some sentences such as “I don’t wanna be alone”. “Ambivalence” shows us once again that Alpha Wolf will not share with us only brutal songs but also know how to master more emotional and gentle tracks. This last title ends on scattered and distant notes. The album closed with gentleness that clashes with the beginning that was raw and brutal to directly put us into it.

Half Living Things marks the return after four years of the band, and it will not go unnoticed. With this third album, Alpha Wolf shares with us their usually ferocious and potent sounds, however they probably did get out more of their comfort zone with some quite melodic tunes. Turn on the sound and be ready for some headbangs as well as emotional moments with this brand new record.
