Depuis leur album éponyme en 2017, les grecs de Acid Mammoth se sont crées une solide réputation sur la scène doom mondiale avec trois albums tous plus envoutants les uns que les autres. En cette année 2024, le groupe nous propose de découvrir son quatrième album studio, intitulé Supersonic Megafauna Collision. Ce nouvel opus sera disponible dès le 5 avril via Heavy Psych Sounds. C’est parti pour six nouveaux titres qu’on sait déjà plein de fuzz et de rythmiques lentes et lourdes à souhait.

La batterie de Marios Louvaris nous accueille dans le morceau éponyme avant que les guitares et la basse ne rejoignent la partie. Le son du groupe est d’emblée reconnaissable et on retrouve tout ce qui fait le charme de la formation grecque dès les premières minutes de ce nouvel opus. La voix de Chris Babalis Jr. arrive en milieu de morceau et là aussi ravit nos oreilles avec cette signature vocale qu’on aime tant. D’emblée on sent que cet album du quatuor va nous emporter loin avec des solos et riffs toujours plus marquants. Le single « Fuzzorgasm (Keep On Screaming) » qu’on vous laisse découvrir en fin d’article est une nouvelle pépite qui nous confirme la parfaite communion musicale au sein du groupe, et en particulier entre cette famille de guitaristes qu’est la famille Babalis! Le père et le fils ne cessent de se répondre à coup de fuzz et solos pour un voyage auditif total!
Les morceaux « Garden Of Bones » et « Atomic Shaman » nous donnent l’occasion de profiter de la maestria combinée de Marios Louvaris et de Dimosthenis Varikos. Les deux forment également un duo de choc qui fait résonner en nous des lignes rythmiques toujours plus pesantes et boostées, autant dire que nos cages thoraciques s’en souviennent! Chaque titre a pour le moment donné l’image d’un groupe qui sait parfaitement où il va et qui propose un album prenant de bout en bout, mais attendez il reste encore deux titres pour plus de bonheur auditif. Et quel bonheur! Entre le plus court, lent et diablement efficace « One With The Void » et la pièce maîtresse « Tusko’s Last Trip » on ne peut que se délecter de chaque instant passé avec le groupe grec. Le dernier morceau livre ce qui reste clairement comme une leçon de doom psyché, proposée par des musiciens au sommet de leur art, qui en allant récupérer tout ce qui a fait leur renommée proposent une nouvelle pièce qui se loge dans ce qu’ils ont proposé de plus percutant et de plus réussi. Un plaisir pour les oreille qui donne à Chris Babalis Jr. une dernière occasion de nous envouter totalement avec sa voix!
Supersonic Megafauna Collision est un quatrième album plus que réussi pour la formation grecque. Acid Mammoth vont toujours plus loin dans le doom psyché avec toujours ce talent pour trouver le riffs ou la ligne rythmique parfaite qui fera de chaque titre un immanquable. On vous conseille plus que vivement l’écoute de ce nouvel opus et de croiser les doigts avec nous pour un retour rapide du groupe en région lilloise et ailleurs. Un nouvel album qui rejoint aisément le top de l’année, et à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte!

Since their self-titled album in 2017, the Greek band Acid Mammoth have built up a solid reputation on the global doom scene with three albums, each more bewitching than the last. Now, in the year 2024, the band are offering us the chance to discover their fourth studio album, entitled Supersonic Megafauna Collision. This new opus will be available from 5 April via Heavy Psych Sounds. Six new tracks, full of fuzz and slow, heavy rhythms.
Marios Louvaris‘ drums greet us on the eponymous track before the guitars and bass join in. The band’s sound is instantly recognisable, and we find everything that makes the Greek band so charming from the very first minutes of this new opus. Chris Babalis Jr.‘s voice comes in mid-song and again delights our ears with that signature vocal we love so much. It’s clear from the outset that this album from the quartet is going to take us far and wide with its ever more striking solos and riffs. The single ‘Fuzzorgasm (Keep On Screaming)’, which we’ll let you discover at the end of this article, is a new nugget that confirms the perfect musical communion within the band, and in particular between this family of guitarists that is the Babalis family! The father and son never stop answering each other with fuzz and solos for a total auditory voyage!
The tracks ‘Garden Of Bones’ and ‘Atomic Shaman’ give us a chance to enjoy the combined mastery of Marios Louvaris and Dimosthenis Varikos. The two also form a powerful duo, delivering increasingly heavy, boosted rhythm lines that are sure to make our ribcages sing! So far, each track has given us the image of a band who know exactly where they’re going and who offer an album that’s gripping from start to finish, but wait a minute, there are still two tracks left for more listening pleasure. And what a treat it is! Between the shorter, slower but devilishly effective ‘One With The Void’ and the centrepiece ‘Tusko’s Last Trip’, you can’t help but revel in every moment spent with the Greek band. The final track delivers what is clearly a lesson in psychedelic doom, offered by musicians at the top of their game, who go back to everything that made them famous and offer up a new piece that fits in with their hardest-hitting and most successful work. It’s a treat for the ears, and gives Chris Babalis Jr. one last chance to mesmerise us with his voice!
Supersonic Megafauna Collision is a highly successful fourth album from the Greek outfit. Acid Mammoth continue to push the boundaries of psychedelic doom, with a talent for finding the perfect riff or rhythmic line to make each track a must-have. We urge you to give this new album a listen, and to keep your fingers crossed for a swift return of the band to the Lille region and beyond. A new album that easily joins the top of the year, and not to be missed under any circumstances!
