Formé en 2018 et après un premier EP remarqué en 2021, le groupe de post punk noise français W!ZARD nous propose de découvrir son tout premier album studio. Intitulé Not Good Enough, il sera disponible le 12 avril prochain via Wizard Music et sera distribué par A Tant Rêver Du Roi et Baco Distribution. Le trio nous propose 10 pistes d’une musique aussi bien influencée par les grands groupes anglais du genre que par la scène plus underground.

Ce qui frappe lorsque « Beautiful House » débute c’est que le trio cherche d’entrée à nous faire comprendre que cet album frappera fort en ne nous laissant aucun répit. Leur post punk noise est une décharge d’énergie brute portée par les voix de Romain Arnault (basse) et Manuel Cayla (guitare), qui chacune avec leur tessiture particulière se mêlent pour un duo absolument imparable. Musicalement on retrouve tout ce qui fait du post punk un des genres musicaux nous faisant le plus vibrer, mais avec cette ajout de noise parfaitement exécuter qui donne au groupe une véritable identité. « Stupid Cunt In The Mall » et « Jack Is A Sociopath » les deux singles présentaient très bien cet album qui en seulement quelques minutes vient nous montrer que la formation bordelaise veut venir chercher le public le plus large possible avec ce premier album, et c’est clairement une réussite! Les sonorités se mêlent, entre guitares évidemment à la pointe mais aussi des claviers présents quand il le faut. La batterie de Julien Bordenave nous donne envie de danser tout au long de l’album et forme avec la basse de Romain une véritable usine à rythmiques endiablées. « I Can’t Feel The Pain » ou encore « Crow’s Dance » sont de véritables pépites qui nous restent en tête dès la première écoute et qui nous donnent envie de foncer au plus vite voir le groupe en live, le tout servi par une production de grande qualité d’Amaury Sauvé! A chaque écoute de l’album on découvre de nouvelles subtilités dans chaque composition et on se demande comment le groupe fait pour enchaîner les tubes en puissance à une telle vitesse! C’est simple, les premiers albums aussi marquants que ça on en écoute pas tous les jours et le riff de « Thief Knot » vient nous le rappeler pour clôturer cet album de la plus belle des manières. Une fois fini une seule chose nous reste en tête : la qualité folle des composition qui font de ce premier album un véritable concurrent de choix pour l’album de l’année!

W!ZARD frappent très très fort avec Not Good Enough! Véritable tour de force il met la scène française une fois de plus au sommet et montre qu’une formation bien de chez nous peut largement rivaliser avec les groupes outre manche. On vous encourage à foncer sur ce disque dès sa sortie et à vous le passer en boucle. Le groupe a déjà pas mal de date de prévues suite à la sortie d’album, aussi bien en France qu’à l’étranger, et on espère de notre côté un passage du côté de Lille très bientôt! Il faudra clairement compter sur W!ZARD dans les années à venir et ce premier album est, on en est certain le premier d’une longue série!

Formed in 2018 and following a well-received debut EP in 2021, French post punk noise band W!ZARD have released their debut studio album. Entitled Not Good Enough, it will be available on 12 April via Wizard Music and will be distributed by A Tant Rêver Du Roi and Baco Distribution. The trio offer us 10 tracks of music as influenced by the great English bands of the genre as by the more underground scene.

What strikes you when « Beautiful House » begins is that the trio are immediately trying to make us understand that this album is going to hit us hard, leaving us with no respite. Their post-punk noise is a discharge of raw energy, carried by the voices of Romain Arnault (bass) and Manuel Cayla (guitar), each with their own particular tessitura, blending together to form an absolutely unstoppable duo. Musically, they have everything that makes post-punk one of the musical genres that thrills us the most, but with this perfectly executed addition of noise that gives the band a real identity. « Stupid Cunt In The Mall » and « Jack Is A Sociopath », the two singles, were a fine introduction to the album, which in the space of just a few minutes shows that the Bordeaux outfit want to appeal to the widest possible audience with this debut album, and it’s clearly a success! The sounds blend together, with guitars obviously at the cutting edge but also keyboards present when needed. Julien Bordenave‘s drums make you want to dance throughout the album and, with Romain‘s bass, form a veritable factory of frenzied rhythms. « I Can’t Feel The Pain » and « Crow’s Dance » are real nuggets that stick in your head from the first listen and make you want to go and see the band live as soon as possible, all served up by Amaury Sauvé‘s top-quality production! Each time you listen to the album, you discover new subtleties in each composition, and you wonder how the band manages to string together a string of powerhouse hits at such speed! It’s simple, you don’t hear debut albums as memorable as this every day, and the riff on ‘Thief Knot’ reminds us of that, bringing the album to a fitting close. Once it’s finished, there’s only one thing that sticks in the mind: the insane quality of the compositions, which make this debut album a real contender for album of the year!

W!ZARD hit hard with Not Good Enough! It’s a real tour de force, putting the French scene at the top of its game once again and showing that a home-grown band can compete with the big boys across the Channel. We urge you to get your hands on this record as soon as it’s released, and play it over and over again. The band already have quite a few dates lined up following the release of their album, both in France and abroad, and we’re hoping to see them in Lille very soon! It’s clear that W!ZARD will be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come, and this first album is certainly the first of many!
