Difficile de choisir où se rendre ce vendredi 3 mai à Lille mais finalement notre coeur a penché pour la soirée Metal Edition #3 se déroulant au Bistrot St So. Cette soirée nous permettra de retrouver le quintet parisien Ashen ainsi que le groupe amiénois Empreinte avant de terminer la soirée sur un set du collectif Alternight.

L’ouverture du Bistrot St So s’est faite vers 19h de quoi largement profiter du soleil extérieur pour boire un ou deux verres avant le début des concerts qui ne se fait que vers 20h45. Cela laisse aussi le temps de profiter pour faire un tour au stand de Jessiculotte pour apprécier sa variété d’ongles press-on ou encore découvrir la nouvelle collection de vêtements d’Alternacult, dévoilée en avant première. La lumière se tamise lorsqu’ Empreinte entre sur scène, le public impatient se rapproche de la scène, il faut dire que cela fait quelque temps que le groupe n’a pas foulé le sol Lillois. Cette soirée est le moment parfait pour introduire leur nouveau single “DREAM” qui est sorti il y a une semaine. On peut déjà voir des personnes qui connaissent les paroles dans le public, c’est d’ailleurs le cas pour plusieurs des titres du groupe! Malgré quelques problèmes techniques (mineurs) et une voix claire qui n’est pas toujours très juste, le public a clairement répondu présent à ce début de soirée, il n’a pas fallu très longtemps avant que les pogos ne se déclenchent parmi les spectateurs. Le groupe a annoncé avec la sortie de “DREAM” une série de singles qui devrait se transformer en EP d’ici l’automne 2024, Empreinte a d’ailleurs profité de cette soirée pour en jouer quelques-uns. 

Plus besoin de vous présenter Ashen ici, les chouchous du metalcore français ont fait quelques dates à Lille en 2023 mais sont aussi parti en tournée européenne avec Novelists début 2024! L’ouverture de leur set se fait toujours sur “Angel” que le public reprend en cœur sans attendre. Sur la petite scène de St So, le groupe occupe l’espace et semble, comme toujours, à l’aise. Les guitaristes tourbillonnent pendant que Clem Richard captive l’audience, par sa présence et sa voix portante tout aussi bien dans les aigus que dans les screams. L’énergie des spectateurs est débordante, les Lillois sont plus que ravis d’accueillir à nouveau Ashen dans leur ville. En novembre nous avions eu le plaisir de découvrir “Chimera” en live alors que le single n’était pas encore sorti, cette fois le public connaît la chanson et ne manque pas de le faire savoir, il en va de même pour “Desire”, le dernier titre du groupe sorti en mi-mars. Si vous avez manqué Ashen sur cette date ne vous inquiétez pas, ils seront très certainement bientôt de retour dans les environs et sinon ils ont une belle petite série de concerts/festivals en France avant leur première tête d’affiche à la Boule Noire en Octobre 2024! 

Pour finir la soirée, nous retrouvons Alternight pour un set énergique ! Mené par Arthur Alternatif, Alternight s’est récemment transformé en collectif notamment avec l’ajout de Thibaut, guitariste d’Empreinte, cela prend aussi une forme logique quand on prend en compte les différents invités qu’Arthur amène régulièrement sur scène. Ce soir la place revient à Yannis, chanteur d’Empreinte ainsi qu’au chanteur de Solar Eruption. Ayant vu Alternight quelques fois en live, notamment à la dernière Metal Edition début décembre, ce set semble mieux fonctionner avec un public qui est moins éparse que la dernière fois. Il est possible que le fait d’avoir réduit le nombre de groupes sur l’affiche ait donné un petit coup de pouce à ce niveau. Le choix des musiques ne laissent rien au hasard, des titres que tout le monde connaît avec “We Got The Moves” d’Electric Callboy qui passe juste après “Throne” de Bring Me The Horizon. Cependant c’est aussi l’occasion pour Alternight de mettre en avant une partie de la scène metal française avec notamment LANDMVRKS, Ten56, Resolve, Freehowling… 

 

Un vendredi soir qui a réuni du monde au Bistrot St So mais qu’on s’attendait à voir tout de même un peu plus rempli avec une tête d’affiche comme Ashen. Cependant, le public a tout de même répondu présent en étant plus que motivé pour cette soirée totalement metalcore avec l’ouverture par Empreinte. Maintenant il nous faudra attendre la date et le line up de la prochaine Metal Edition pour voir ce qu’Alternight et le Bistrot St So nous réserve.

It was hard to choose where to go this May 3rd, in Lille, but in the end our hearts went out to Metal Edition #3, taking place at Bistrot St So. The evening will feature the Parisian quintet Ashen and the Amiens band Empreinte, before ending with a set by the Alternight collective.

Bistrot St So opened at around 7pm, giving plenty of time to take advantage of the sunshine outside to have a drink or two before the concerts didn’t start until 8:45pm. This also left plenty of time for a stroll around the Jessiculotte stand to appreciate her variety of press-on nails, or to discover Alternacult‘s new clothing collection, unveiled as a preview. The lights dim as Empreinte take to the stage, and the impatient crowd moves closer to the stage – after all, it’s been some time since the band last set foot on Lille soil. This evening is the perfect time to introduce their new single « DREAM », released a week ago. We can already see people in the audience who know the lyrics, as is the case for several of the band’s songs! Despite a few (minor) technical problems and a clear voice that wasn’t always quite right, the audience clearly responded to this early evening, and it wasn’t long before pogos broke out among the spectators. With the release of « DREAM », the band has announced a series of singles that should become an EP by autumn 2024, and Empreinte took advantage of the evening to play a few of them.

There’s no need to introduce Ashen here: the darlings of French metalcore played a few dates in Lille in 2023, but also went on a European tour with Novelists in early 2024! Their set always opens with « Angel », which the crowd sing-along to. On the small St So stage, the band occupy the space and seem, as always, at ease. The guitarists whirl around, while Clem Richard captivates the audience with his presence and his voice, which carries high notes as well as screams. The audience’s energy is overflowing, and the people of Lille are more than delighted to welcome Ashen back to their city. In November we had the pleasure of discovering « Chimera » live, even though the single hadn’t yet been released, but this time the audience knows the song and doesn’t fail to let us know, and the same goes for « Desire », the band’s latest track released in mid-March. If you missed Ashen on this date, don’t worry, they’ll certainly be back in the area soon, and if not, they’ve got a nice little run of concerts/festivals in France before their first headlining gig at La Boule Noire in October 2024!

To round off the evening, we meet up with Alternight for an energetic set! Led by Arthur Alternatif, Alternight has recently transformed itself into a collective, notably with the addition of Empreinte guitarist Thibaut, which also makes sense when you consider the various guests Arthur regularly brings on stage. Tonight, the spotlight falls on Yannis, lead singer of Empreinte, and the lead singer of Solar Eruption. Having seen Alternight live a few times, notably at last year’s Metal Edition in early December, this set seems to work better with an audience that’s less sparse than last time. It’s possible that the fact of having reduced the number of bands on the bill has helped in this respect. The choice of music leaves nothing to chance, with familiar tracks such as Electric Callboy‘s « We Got The Moves » playing just after Bring Me The Horizon’s « Throne ». However, it was also an opportunity for Alternight to showcase part of the French metal scene, including LANDMVRKS, Ten56, Resolve, Freehowling…

Friday night at Bistrot St So was well attended, but with a headliner like Ashen, it was expected to be a little fuller. Nevertheless, the audience was more than motivated to attend this totally metalcore evening, opened by Empreinte. Now we’ll have to wait for the date and line-up of the next Metal Edition to see what Alternight and Bistrot St So have in store for us.
