Après un week end de festival quoi de mieux que de retourner à l’Aéronef pour une nouvelle date découverte. The Armed venus tout droit des Etats Unis viennent nous présenter ce soir leur hardcore punk qui s’est quelque peu transformé dernièrement. Pour les accompagner nous aurons le droit au punk des Anglais de Knives. C’est parti pour une nouvelle belle soirée où le pogo est roi dans un Club de l’Aéronef qui manque malheureusement un peu de monde lors de l’arrivée du premier groupe sur scène.

La lumière s’éteint et Knives débarquent sur scène et lancent d’entrée un morceau des plus énergiques. Jay Schottlander nous donne instantanément envie de remuer dans la fosse avec son chant puissant et engagé à la fois. On est sur un groupe qui a tous les codes du punk mais qui sait aussi les brouiller avec la présence sur scènes de deux saxophonistes qui alternent entres parties cuivrées du plus bel effet et chœurs endiablés. Petit à petit on voit de nouvelles personnes débarquer dans la fosse et on sent que la prestation du groupe ne laisse personne indifférent. On bouge, on danse, on pogotte à l’envie et vu notre gueule de bois électorale on en avait bien besoin. C’est simple Knives est le remède punk qu’il nous fallait et chaque nouveau titre est un nouveau coup de coeur pour cette formation venue tout droit de Bristol! Chaque musicien.ne apporte son identité pour un son où le punk, le post punk et d’autres genres bien variés se mêlent avec toujours la même réussite. On sent une vraie maturité dans la musique du groupe et pourtant sur scène on ne voit personne de bien vieux, signe une fois de plus qu’en Angleterre le rock est très très loin d’être mort et a encore de belles heures devant lui. Les morceaux s’enchaînent rapidement mais Jay n’hésitera pas à perler un peu au public à quelques reprises. La fête est déjà totale et les derniers morceaux finissent de faire renter la formation anglaise dans la longue liste de groupes qu’on a instantanément hâte de retrouver. Il fallait être là pour ce début de soirée à l’Aéronef, car Knives ont livré une prestation parfaite de bout en bout qui nous laisse avec la furieuse envie de nous plonger instantanément dans leur discographie.

On enchaine assez vite avec The Armed qui arrivent sur scène en nous balançant une belle dose de stroboscopes d’entrée de jeu. Comme toujours avec les américains ça joue fort mais leur punk le mérite clairement! L’énergie mise par chacun des musiciens sur scène est dingue, et on verra très vite certains membres de la formation descendre de scène pour venir au plus près du public lillois. « ALL FUTURES » et « Spot Of Form » lancent les hostilités et c’est parti pour une heure d’énergie brute en pleine face. Les sonorités punk résonnent dans nos oreilles avec force et nous donnent envie de nous jeter dans le pit. On avait eu echo de la réputation live du groupe et clairement elle n’est pas volée. On est même étonnés qu’il n’y ait pas beaucoup plus de monde dans la salle tant la communion est totale entre les musiciens et le public. « FKA World » ou encore « Everything’s Glitter » font encore monter la température dans la salle lilloise et donnent à chaque musicien l’occasion de nous montrer une fois de plus leur immense talent. Punk oblige la soirée file à grande vitesse, et on arrive assez rapidement aux derniers titres du concert. Les trois dernières occasions de remuer sont vécues pleinement par chaque personne présente ce soir, avec de nouvelles visites dans la fosse du chanteur et un pogo endiablé illuminé par des stroboscopes toujours plus épileptiques. Le concert se clôt sur « BIG SHELL » qui sera laissera tout le monde vidé de son énergie mais prêt à applaudir longuement cette étonnante formation qui nous a clairement livré un set d’anthologie.

The lights go down and Knives take to the stage, kicking off an energetic set. Jay Schottlander instantly makes you want to move in the pit with his powerful yet committed vocals. This is a band with all the codes of punk, but who also know how to blur them with the presence on stage of two saxophonists who alternate between brass parts to great effect and frenzied backing vocals. Little by little, new people start to appear in the pit, and you can feel that the band’s performance leaves no one indifferent. The crowd were moving, dancing and pogoing to their hearts’ content, and given our electoral hangover, that was just what we needed. Quite simply, Knives is the punk remedy we’ve been craving, and each new track is a new crush on this band from Bristol! Each musician brings his or her own identity to a sound where punk, post-punk and other varied genres blend together with the same success. You can feel a real maturity in the band’s music and yet on stage you don’t see anyone very old, a sign once again that rock in England is very, very far from dead and still has a great future ahead of it. The songs came thick and fast, but Jay had no hesitation in beading the audience a few times. The party is already in full swing and the last few tracks put the English band back on the long list of bands we can’t wait to see again. You had to be there at the start of the evening at L’Aéronef, because Knives delivered a perfect performance from start to finish, leaving us with a furious desire to dive straight into their discography.

Then it’s on to The Armed, who take to the stage with a nice dose of strobe lighting from the off. As always with the Americans, they play hard, but their punk clearly deserves it! The energy put on by each of the musicians on stage is insane, and we soon see some of the band members get off stage to get closer to the audience in Lille. « ALL FUTURES » and « Spot Of Form » kicked things off, and we were in for an hour of raw, in-your-face energy. The punk sounds resound in our ears with force and make us want to throw ourselves into the pit. We’d heard about the band’s live reputation and it’s clearly not stolen. We’re even surprised that there aren’t many more people in the room, such is the total communion between the musicians and the audience. « FKA World » and « Everything’s Glitter » further raised the temperature in the Lille venue, giving each musician the chance to show off their immense talent once again. Punk being the order of the day, the evening went by at breakneck speed, and it wasn’t long before the last songs of the concert were played. The last three opportunities to shake things up were fully enjoyed by everyone present this evening, with further visits to the pit by the singer and a frenzied pogo illuminated by ever more epileptic strobes. The concert ended with « BIG SHELL », which left everyone drained of energy but ready to give a long round of applause to this astonishing band, who had clearly delivered an anthology set.

Another fine evening at L’Aéronef this June, with two bands at the top of their game. Knives and The Armed gave their all for our greatest pleasure, taking our minds off the troubles of today’s world with their impressive on-stage energy. We hope to see both bands again very soon, and of course we’ll be keeping a close eye on their respective careers.
