Le Rock In Bourlon est de retour après une édition 2023 des plus réussies! Pour la cuvée 2024, le festival et son équipe ont mis les petits plats dans les grands avec une nouvelle affiche à tomber. C’est donc entourés de nos amis, et ravis de retrouver des têtes connus que nous rejoignons le joli village niché entre Cambrai et Arras pour trois jours de musique pleins de promesses. Après une installation rapide, il est temps de retrouver la jolie place de l’Abreuvoir pour cette première journée. Au programme : Ciśnienie, Krzta, Ni, Deûle, Spotlights, Iffernet, Oxbow, Morne, Wormrot et Hulder.

Ciśnienie

Les balances nous avaient déjà bien donné envie, mais dès l’arrivée sur scène des Polonai.se.s de Ciśnienie, on se prend notre toute première claque du festival, et ça n’est que le premier groupe sur scène. Le festival continue de se remplir petit à petit mais on voit très rapidement le monde affluer vers la scène pour profiter au plus près du post rock chaotic boosté au jazz du groupe de Katowice. Il s’agit là de leur tout premier passage en France, et on ne remerciera jamais assez Pierre, programmateur du festival, pour cette découverte incroyable. Les claviers, le saxo baryton et le violon se mêlent à merveille à la basse et la batterie pour un son unique qui nous émeut autant qu’il nous surprend. C’est simple, chaque seconde est un émerveillement pour les oreilles, et même si on a du mal parfois à savoir où les titres commencent et finissent on ne boude pas notre plaisir et on se délecte de chaque note proposée par le quintet. On ne pouvait rêver mieux pour débuter ce festival et on laisse le groupe nous quitter sous de larges applaudissements de tout le public. On espère très fort les revoir dans le coin au plus vite pour une nouvelle prestation en salle cette fois-ci, en tout cas on tient avec Ciśnienie notre premier coup de cœur du weekend!

Krzta

Direction la scène du Paon pour continuer sur la découverte de la scène underground polonaise avec Krzta venus tout droit de Olsztyn. Ici on part sur un son beaucoup plus sludge et noisy blindé de sonorités math qui font leur petit effet. Là aussi pour le public on est sur une découverte totale et quelle découverte! Andrzej (batterie), Kuba (bass) et Kamil (guitare et chant) nous balancent les morceaux de leur album ŻÓŁĆ.NISZCZENIE.ZGLISZCZE sorti en 2022, et il faut dire que ça tape très fort. C’est simple le trio ne laisse rien au hasard et donne une première très belle dose d’énergie brute au public déjà présent en nombre devant la petite scène du festival. On sent l’envie du groupe de marquer les esprits et c’est réussi! Comme pour le groupe précédent, on a aucun mal à imaginer le trio revenir rapidement dans une salle de la région tant le public est énergique tout au long du set et les encourage vivement entre chaque titre. Une fois encore la découverte est totale et on sent dans les remerciements du trio en fin de set qu’ils sont ravis par cet accueil chaleureux que le public de Bourlon leur a réservé! On vous encourage là aussi à aller les découvrir au plus vite!

Ni

Prêt à nous présenter leur album Fol Nais, que nous vous avions chaudement recommandé, la joyeuse bande de Ni arrive sur la grande scène et se lance directement dans une avalanche rock aussi barrée qu’impressionnante de maîtrise. Les morceaux évoquant les différents fous du roi de l’Histoire, comme Triboulet ou Dagonet par exemple, sont des leçons de musique jazzy à souhait et blindée de polyrythmies. On avait hâte de découvrir le groupe sur scène et on ne pouvait clairement pas espérer mieux du quatuor rhônalpin, chaque musicien étant au sommet de son art et donnant tout pour rendre cette musique si surprenante accessible au plus grand nombre. Le public se délecte de la prestation et n’hésite pas à applaudir à tout rompre entre chaque titre joué en ce début de soirée ensoleillée. Nos mâchoires se décrocheront plusieurs fois face à la maestria évidente qui émane de chacun des quatre musiciens. Ici pas de pignole gratuite, mais une envie de faire virevolter les guitares dans un amas sonore foutraque qui réussi à ne jamais perdre le spectateur et qui ravis nos tympans. Clairement un des groupes à ne pas manquer de cette première journée, Ni ont conquis les cœurs et prouvé une fois de plus qu’une musique aussi intense et recherchée que la leur trouve aisément son public quand l’énergie et l’âme mise dans l’interprétation se ressent autant. Un coup de cœur renouvelé de notre côté et un accueil du public qui en dit long sur l’amour de notre scène française qui règne à Bourlon.

Deûle

6ème review de Deûle entre nos lignes en un peu plus d’un an, et 6ème prestation totalement réussie ! Le trio Lillois est un de nos coups de cœur, et leur univers noisy doom électronique est un pur régal, et ce dès les premières notes de « Le Goût du Sang ». Pierre, caché derrière ses lunettes de soleil donne la rythmique lente et lourde à Elya et JB qui s’élancent dans un tourbillon de sonorités. Du synth doom qui captive tout le monde, et c’est pas mince de le dire quand on voit le silence religieux dans le public. Avec des musiciens aussi prolifique, portant un nombre de projets musicaux incalculables derrière eux, Deûle, c’est un peu comme un aboutissement de tout leur talent respectif, qui s’exprime avec douceur mais plein d’émotions.

Spotlights

On ne compte plus le nombre de personnes qui nous ont dit d’écouter Spotlights, et qui les ont mis dans leur playlist (coucou Clément Duboscq), il est donc évident que cette prestation est dans les immanquables de la journée. Le trio vont nous apprendre la définition de distorsions pendant ces 50 minutes de set. Mario Quintero, Sarah Quintero et Chris Enriquez sont en pleine forme et c’est un univers assez aérien, et presque mystique qui se présente à nous. C’est un travail de la basse qui frémit, tel un bourdonnement inquiétant qui nous captive, et on se mets à headbanger quasiment instantanément. Spotlights sont impressionnants, et on est heureux de les avoir découverts ce soir.

Iffernet

Du black métal en duo, mais qui sonne comme 5 ! Nous attendions avec impatience la venue de Iffernet, et nous ne nous sommes pas trompé ! Dans une profondeur de désespoir, les Rouennais nous ont bluffé pendant ce set. Un chant très lourd, et plein d’émotions, qui vient pleurer sur la profondeur des notes. Leur prestation, c’est comme un jeu de tennis où les deux musiciens se répondent. On voit très vite le public bouger la tête au rythme rapide de la caisse claire, avant que tout le set s’accélère avec l’apparition de la double pédale. On se fait écrabouiller tout doucement pour finir vide d’énergie. C’est totalement gagné pour nous, on ne peut que vous encourager à aller les voir.

Oxbow

Il est temps d’accueillir Oxbow sur la grande scène et l’arrivée de Eugene S. Robinson en costume jaune en marquera plus d’un. Les musiciens se lancent dans ce qu’ils font de mieux depuis 1988, un rock expérimental où blues, jazz, heavy métal s’entrechoquent dans une avalanche de riffs qui font mouche. Le public est très nombreux et beaucoup sont ravis de retrouver le combo américain dans le cadre du festival. On sent rapidement que l’énergie monte en flèche mais l’attitude scénique un peu trop sexualisée du chanteur nous fera malheureusement un peu sortir du show. Ce dernier finira d’ailleurs en caleçon un peu trop moulant et mettra toute son énergie dans chaque ligne de chant. Niko Wenner est clairement impérial à la guitare tout comme le duo rythmique mené par Greg Davis à la batterie et Dan Adams à la basse. On part prendre une petite pause pendant qu’une large partie du public profite pleinement de la fin du set. On est donc sur une petite déception car musicalement on est quand même sur des morceaux parfaitement interprétés et bourrés de mélange des genres comme on les aime tant.

Morne

Avec Engraved With Pain sorti en fin d’année dernière, Morne avaient frappé fort et mis nos sentiments à rudes épreuves. Il est temps pour nous de découvrir le groupe en live et en quelques secondes, on retrouve tout ce qui nous enchante dans le groupe américain. La nuit sied parfaitement à la musique du trio, toujours nichée entre sludge, crust et post métal. Chaque titre laisse aux musiciens toute la latitude pour nous montrer l’étendue de leur talent. Loin de la scène on prend en pleine face un son massif qui vient nous retourner les tripes et nous emmener toujours plus profond dans les méandres de nos esprits. Ebloui par la prestation des américains, le public du Paon se plonge à corps perdu dans les notes puissantes jouées par nos amis de Boston. C’est simple on aimerait que leur set ne cesse pas tant il nous émeut et nous transporte. Le set semble filer beaucoup trop vite à notre goût et il est déjà temps de dire au revoir à Morne, mais leur dernier titre viendra parfaire un set déjà dans notre liste des tout meilleurs de cette première journée de festival. Le groupe quitte la scène en ayant mis tout le monde d’accord et vu l’accueil qui leur a été réservé on espère qu’ils mettront la région Lilloise au programme de leur prochaine tournée Européenne.

Wormrot

Wormrot, c’est une aventure particulière pour moi. Tout d’abord, c’est tomber amoureuse de la pochette de leur album Hiss, sorti en 2022. Puis une écoute assez mitigé, qui ne m’a pas vraiment convaincu. C’est leur passage à The Black Lab en mai 2023 qui nous a fait changer d’avis. Ce soir, on a hâte de voir l’accueil et la prestation qu’ils peuvent avoir en festival et sur une aussi grande scène. Et bien, on n’a jamais vu autant de main et doigt levé dans les airs pour mimer le rythme de la batterie que pendant ce concert. Ah c’est sûr, Wormrot, c’est rapide, c’est plein d’intelligence, c’est du très bon grind ! Ils arrivent à convaincre non sans mal et proposent un show assez impressionnant. Le public s’y mets à cœur joie et voilà que tout le monde bouge et se lance dans la bagarre !

Hulder

Cette première journée se termine au son du black métal de Hulder et de ses musiciens. Les flemmes de l’enfer sont descendues sur Bourlon et c’est parti pour une plongée dans un monde sombre qui clairement colle parfaitement à cette nuit nuageuse. Totale découverte pour nous Hulder nous capte avec ses morceaux puissants en quelque seconde pour ne plus nous lâcher. Les headbangs sont nombreux et on sent que le public trouve largement son compte dans la prestation impeccable de l’artiste américaine, qui nous hurle ses paroles avec brio tout en balançant des riffs à réveiller les morts. Les morceaux issus de sa longue discographie sont tous plus prenants les uns que les autres on adore voir un black métal aussi dévastateur devant un public aussi engagé dans la performance. Les flemmes réchauffent l’atmosphère et habillent un peu plus un décorum déjà sublime. La fatigue commence à frapper à la porte mais on profite encore de quelques titres majestueux avant de sentir nos jambes commencer à nous signaler l’heure tardive. On reste sur un véritable coup de cœur qui nous a fait découvrir une artiste dont on ira sans aucun doute poncer la discographie dès notre retour.

Life In Bourlon 

C’est totalement conquis par cette première journée qu’on part terminer la soirée sur le camping du festival. Le Rock In Bourlon a proposé une belle dose de découvertes, de belles confirmations et surtout un accueil parfait qui ne fait que renforcer un peu plus notre amour déjà grand pour ce festival On vous donne rendez-vous demain pour la suite des aventures!

Rock In Bourlon is back after a highly successful 2023 edition! For the 2024 edition, the festival and its team have pulled out all the stops with a new line-up to die for. So, surrounded by our friends, and delighted to see some familiar faces, we head to the pretty village nestled between Cambrai and Arras for three days of music full of promise. After a quick settling in, it was time to return to the pretty Place de l’Abreuvoir for this first day. On the bill for today : Ciśnienie, Krzta, Ni, Deûle, Spotlights, Iffernet, Oxbow, Morne, Wormrot and Hulder.

Ciśnienie

The sound check had already whetted our appetite, but as soon as the polish musicians from Ciśnienie took to the stage, we got our very first slap in the face of the festival, and this was only the first band on stage. The festival continues to fill up little by little, but it doesn’t take long for the crowd to flock to the stage to enjoy the Katowice band’s jazz-fuelled chaotic post-rock. This was their very first appearance in France, and we can’t thank festival organiser Pierre enough for this incredible discovery. Keyboards, baritone sax and violin blend perfectly with bass and drums to create a unique sound that moves and surprises. It’s simple, every second is a marvel for the ears, and even if we sometimes have trouble knowing where the tracks begin and end, we don’t hold back our pleasure and revel in every note offered by the quintet. We couldn’t have wished for a better start to the festival, and we let the band leave us to rapturous applause from the entire audience. We very much hope to see them back in the area as soon as possible for another indoor performance this time, but in any case Ciśnienie is our first favourite of the weekend!

Krzta

Head to the Paon stage to continue your discovery of the Polish underground scene with Krzta from Olsztyn. Here, the sound is much more sludgey and noisy, with an abundance of maths sounds that have a real impact. Here, too, the audience were treated to a total discovery, and what a discovery it was! Andrzej (drums), Kuba (bass) and Kamil (guitar and vocals) play tracks from their album ŻÓŁĆ.NISZCZENIE.ZGLISZCZE, released in 2022, and it has to be said that they hit hard. It’s simple, the trio leave nothing to chance and deliver their first great dose of raw energy to the crowd already packed out in front of the festival’s small stage. You can feel the band’s desire to make an impact, and they succeed! As with the previous band, it’s not hard to imagine the trio returning to a local venue in the near future, as the audience is so energetic throughout their set, cheering them on between songs. Once again, the discovery was complete, and you could tell from the trio’s thanks at the end of their set that they were delighted by the warm welcome they had received from the Bourlon audience! We encourage you to go and discover them as soon as possible!

Ni

Ready to present their album Fol Nais, which we warmly recommended, the merry band from Ni arrive on the main stage and launch straight into a rock avalanche as crazy as it is impressive in its mastery. The songs, which evoke the various madmen of history, such as Triboulet and Dagonet for example, are lessons in jazzy, polyrhythmic music. We couldn’t wait to discover the group live on stage, and we clearly couldn’t have hoped for anything better from the Rhone-Alpes quartet, each musician at the top of their game and giving their all to make this amazing music accessible to as many people as possible. The audience were delighted with their performance, and didn’t hesitate to applaud wildly between each track played on this sunny early evening. Our jaws dropped several times at the obvious mastery emanating from each of the four musicians. There’s no gratuitous penny-pinching here, just a desire to make the guitars twirl around in a mess of sound that never loses its audience and delights our eardrums. Clearly one of the not-to-be-missed bands of the first day, Ni conquered hearts and proved once again that music as intense and sophisticated as theirs easily finds its audience when the energy and soul put into the performance is felt as much. We were delighted once again, and the response from the audience says a lot about the love of the French music scene in Bourlon.

Deûle

It’s Deûle‘s 6th review on our website in just over a year, and 6th totally successful performance! The trio from Lille are one of our favourites, and their noisy doom electronica is a pure delight, right from the first notes of ‘Le Goût du Sang’. Pierre, hidden behind his sunglasses, gives the slow, heavy rhythm to Elya and JB, who take off in a whirlwind of sounds. Synth doom that captivates everyone, and that’s no mean feat when you see the religious silence in the audience. With such prolific musicians, carrying an incalculable number of musical projects behind them, Deûle is something of a culmination of all their respective talents, expressed gently but full of emotion.

Spotlights

We’ve lost count of the number of people who’ve told us to listen to Spotlights, and who’ve put them on their playlists (shoutout to Clément Duboscq), so it’s obvious that this performance is one of the day’s must-sees. The trio will be teaching us the definition of distortion during their 50-minute set. Mario Quintero, Sarah Quintero and Chris Enriquez are in top form and it’s a rather ethereal, almost mystical universe that presents itself to us. The bass shakes like an ominous buzz that captivates us, and we start headbanging almost instantly. Spotlights are impressive, and we’re delighted to have discovered them tonight.

Iffernet

Black metal as a duo, but sounding like 5! We’d been looking forward to Iffernet‘s appearance, and we weren’t mistaken! With a depth of despair, the Rouen-based band blew us away during their set. Their vocals are heavy and full of emotion, weeping over the depths of the notes. Their performance was like a game of tennis, with the two musicians responding to each other. You soon see the audience bobbing their heads to the rapid beat of the snare drum, before the whole set speeds up with the appearance of the double pedal. We’re slowly being crushed, only to end up empty of energy. It’s a total win for us, and we can only encourage you to go and see them.

Oxbow

It’s time to welcome Oxbow to the main stage, and the arrival of Eugene S. Robinson in his yellow suit. The musicians launch into what they’ve been doing best since 1988, an experimental rock where blues, jazz and heavy metal collide in an avalanche of riffs that hit home. The crowd was packed and many were delighted to see the American combo back at the festival. The energy quickly builds, but the singer’s slightly over-sexualised attitude on stage takes us out of the show. In fact, he ended up wearing a pair of pants that were a little too tight, and put all his energy into every vocal line. Niko Wenner is clearly imperial on guitar, as is the rhythm duo led by Greg Davis on drums and Dan Adams on bass. We took a short break while a large part of the audience took full advantage of the end of the set. It was a bit of a disappointment, though, as musically the tracks were perfectly performed and packed with the kind of genre-bending we’ve come to love.

Morne

With Engraved With Pain, released at the end of last year, Morne hit hard and put our feelings to the test. Now it’s time to discover the band live, and in the space of a few seconds, we find everything that enchants us about the American band. The night perfectly suits the trio’s music, always nestled between sludge, crust and post metal. Each track gives the musicians plenty of scope to show us the extent of their talent. Away from the stage, the massive sound hits you in the face, turning your guts inside out and taking you deeper and deeper into the recesses of your mind. Dazzled by the Americans’ performance, the audience at the Paon plunges headlong into the powerful notes played by our friends from Boston. It’s simple, we wish their set would never end, it moves and transports us so much. The set seems to go by far too quickly for our liking, and it’s already time to say goodbye to Morne, but their final track rounds off a set that’s already on our list of the very best of this first day of the festival. The band leave the stage having put everyone in agreement, and given the welcome they’ve received, we hope they’ll put the Lille region on the agenda for their next European tour.

Wormrot

Wormrot is a special adventure for me. First of all, I fell in love with the cover of their album Hiss, released in 2022. Then a rather mixed listening experience, which didn’t really convince me. It was their performance at The Black Lab in May 2023 that changed my mind. Tonight, we can’t wait to see how they’re received and performed at a festival and on such a big stage. Well, we’ve never seen so many hands and fingers raised in the air to mimic the rhythm of the drums as during this concert. Oh sure, Wormrot is fast, it’s clever, it’s great grind! They managed to convince the crowd, not without difficulty, and put on a pretty impressive show. The crowd goes wild and everyone gets moving and gets into the fray!

Hulder

This first day ends to the sound of black metal from Hulder and his musicians. The flames of hell have descended on Bourlon and we’re off for a plunge into a dark world that clearly fits in perfectly with this cloudy night. A total discovery for us, Hulder captures us with his powerful tracks in a matter of seconds and never lets go. There were plenty of headbangs, and you could tell that the audience was really enjoying the impeccable performance by the American artist, who screamed her lyrics brilliantly while throwing down riffs that would wake the dead. The tracks from her lengthy discography are each more gripping than the last, and we love seeing such devastating black metal in front of an audience so committed to the performance. The flames warm up the atmosphere and dress up an already sublime decorum. Tiredness begins to set in, but we enjoy a few more majestic tracks before our legs start to tell us how late it is. It was a real amazing discovery and a favorite of ours, introducing us to an artist whose discography we’ll no doubt be checking out as soon as we get home.

 

We were totally won over by this first day and headed off to finish the evening on the festival campsite. Rock In Bourlon offered a great dose of discoveries, some great confirmations and above all a perfect welcome which only strengthens our already great love for this festival.
