Who Are You When No One Is Watching ? sorti sur Rude Records, explore les émotions humaines et la relation avec soi-même, notre vrai moi.

Le premier morceau, « Who Are You », sert parfaitement d’introduction à Graphic Nature. On y entend quelques grésillements et interférences au fur et à mesure que l’intensité augmente. Cependant, le quintet n’a pas le temps d’accompagner lentement son public dans son univers. « Locked In » démarre de manière brute et puissante, une chanson qui nous traverse comme un électrochoc, nous rappelant pourquoi le groupe s’est fait connaître si rapidement. Tout au long de Who Are You When No One Is Watching?, on redécouvre leur son contemporain et agressif, influencé principalement par le nu-metal et le metalcore des années 2000. Graphic Nature n’est pas paresseux avec des riffs de guitare lourds et tranchants, des breakdowns et des chansons rapides. Il y a une grande rotation entre les morceaux, mettant en avant les guitares de Pete Woolven et Matas Michailovskis ou la voix de Harvey Freeman. Parfois, l’alternance se fait même au sein d’une même chanson, comme dans « Blinded » ou « Breathe ». Même au sein de certains morceaux, Harvey Freeman alterne entre cris et paroles chuchotées, laissant parfois la musique s’arrêter complètement pour mettre en valeur une phrase ou deux qui nous marqueront. C’est le cas de « Breathe », où la tension monte jusqu’à ce que tout s’arrête pour qu’il puisse dire « I can’t hold on » avant que le breakdown n’arrive. Si vous l’entendez en live, je suis certain que vous devrez vous préparer à des mosh pits intenses dans la foule.

Graphic Nature est également connu pour la profondeur de ses textes et son ouverture d’esprit. Avec ce disque, Harvey Freeman exprime son désespoir sur des titres comme « Something I’m Not ». L’atmosphère est inquiétante au début, comme dans l’introduction « Who Are You ». Cependant, les paroles sont prononcées avec calme et une certaine douleur alors qu’il parle de la haine qu’il endure pour quelqu’un qui l’a profondément blessé et qui lui a tout pris. Nous pouvons ressentir la violence et la crudité de tout cela. « Fractured » aborde le sujet de l’adaptation et de la guérison lorsque l’on grandit sans que personne ne comprenne ce qui nous arrive. « Low » parle plutôt de notre état le plus bas, avec Harvey Freeman qui crie « I hate myself », ce qui en fait l’un des morceaux les plus émouvants de l’album.

Cependant, Graphic Nature a également profité de ce nouvel album pour se renouveler sur certains points. De nombreux éléments électro ont été inclus dans des chansons comme « No One Is Watching », mais « Session24 », un interlude dans l’album, est probablement le morceau le plus surprenant car il apporte un rythme drum’n’bass. On retrouve d’autres éléments de drum’n’bass incorporés dans d’autres titres comme « When No One Is Watching ». Ils sont si bien incorporés mais aussi si remarquables qu’ils nous prennent un peu au dépourvu. Bien sûr, le groupe ne perd rien de son son original. Des titres comme « N.F.A. » ou « Blinded » vous donneront envie de headbanguer. Tout au long de l’écoute de Who Are You When No One Is Watching ?, on est ému par les paroles et la façon dont Harvey Freeman se dévoile et révèle son traumatisme, mais on a toujours envie de noyer notre rage et nos sentiments dans la fosse.

Le groupe de cinq musiciens a été acclamé pour son premier album ainsi que pour ses performances live. Who Are You When No One Is Watching ? suivra probablement le même chemin, et il ne serait pas exagéré de dire que ce disque est certainement l’une des meilleures sorties de 2024 pour le genre nu-metal/metalcore. Graphic Nature peut facilement se connecter à son public grâce à ses paroles crues sur des sujets tels que la maladie mentale, auxquels beaucoup de gens peuvent s’identifier. Nous ne pouvons qu’espérer que cet album a été une expérience cathartique pour le groupe autant qu’il peut l’être pour le public lors d’un concert.

British band Graphic Nature has been rising fast for the past few years, and they do not seem to be slowing down. In February 2023, they released their debut album, and now, on July 12th, they are already back with a brand new album! Who Are You When No One Is Watching?, released via Rude Records, delves into human emotions and the relationship with oneself, our true self.

The first track, « Who Are You, » serves perfectly as an introduction to Graphic Nature. We can hear some cracklings and interferences as the intensity grows. However, the quintet does not have the time to slowly accompany their audience into their universe. « Locked In » starts in a raw and powerful way, a song that goes through us like an electric shock, reminding us why the band became prominent so quickly. Throughout Who Are You When No One Is Watching?, we rediscover their aggressive contemporary sound, influenced mainly by nu-metal and 2000s metalcore. Graphic Nature is not lazy with heavy and sharp guitar riffs, breakdowns, and fast-paced songs. There is a great rotation between tracks putting forward Pete Woolven and Matas Michailovskis’ guitars or Harvey Freeman’s voice. Sometimes the rotation even happens within one song, as in « Blinded » or « Breathe. » Even within some tracks, Harvey Freeman switches between screams and whispered lyrics, letting sometimes the music stop entirely to highlight a sentence or two that will leave a great impression on us. This is the case for « Breathe, » where tension builds until everything pauses so he can say, “I can’t hold on » before the breakdown arrives. If you hear this live, I’m quite sure you will need to prepare yourself for some intense mosh pits in the crowd.

Graphic Nature is also known for their lyrical depth and raw openness. With this record, Harvey Freeman expels his despair on tracks such as « Something I’m Not. » The atmosphere is worrying at the beginning, as in the introduction “Who Are You.” However, the lyrics are spoken with calm and a certain amount of pain as he talks about the hate he endures for someone who hurt him deeply and took everything away. We can feel the violence and rawness of it all. « Fractured » addresses the subject of coping and healing when growing up with no one understanding what is happening to you. « Low » is more about being at our lowest point, featuring Harvey Freeman screaming « I hate myself » making it one of the most emotional tracks of the record.

However, Graphic Nature also took the chance with this new album to renew themselves in some parts. Many electro elements were included in songs such as « No One Is Watching, » but « Session24, » an interlude in the album, is probably the most surprising track as it brings in a drum’n’bass beat. We can find other drum’n’bass elements incorporated into other titles such as « When No One Is Watching. » They are so well incorporated but also quite remarkable that they catch us a little off guard. Of course, the band loses nothing of their original sound. Tracks like « N.F.A. » or « Blinded » will make it impossible not to headbang. During the whole listening of Who Are You When No One Is Watching? we are moved by the lyrics and how Harvey Freeman reveals himself and his trauma, but we still want to drown our rage and feelings in the pit.

The five-piece band has been acclaimed for their debut album as well as for their live performances. Who Are You When No One Is Watching? will probably follow the same path, and it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that this record is certainly one of the best releases of 2024 for the nu-metal/metalcore genre. Graphic Nature can easily connect with their audience through their raw lyrics about subjects such as mental illness that many people can relate to. We can only hope that this album was a cathartic experience for the band as much as it might become for the public during a concert.
