Quand on nous demande « Quels sont les groupes de métal moderne, métalcore à Lille ? », le nom de AĦNA est le premier à nous venir en tête, et pourtant, le groupe ne sort ce 27 septembre que leur tout premier EP, Waves. Autant vous dire que les Lillois ont réussi à faire parler d’eux sur la scène locale, et posent aujourd’hui une nouvelle pierre au monument qu’ils sont en train d’ériger.

AĦNA ont, depuis leur création en 2022, fait le tour des salles de la région et des petits festivals, marquant au fer rouge chacun de leur passage. Un nom désormais bien connu de tous, qui leur a permis de lancer la création de leur premier EP, Waves, en financement participatif via la plateforme Ulule. Le public a répondu présent et c’est à 127% que le financement s’est clôturé, de quoi donner de la force au groupe pour finaliser l’arc de lancement du groupe. Car oui, depuis 2022, les quatre compères nous ont fait découvrir leur musique que ce soit en électrique qu’en acoustique, via des clips, sur les plateformes mais il était temps pour eux de figer tout cela dans un EP. Si vous avez déjà vu le groupe en live, nul doute que vous allez reconnaitre certains des titres de cet EP, mais prenons le temps de l’écouter, comme une réelle découverte.

Le métal d’AĦNA est plein d’inspirations qui permets d’en faire un album totalement à part entière. Ils proposent des compositions de métal alternatif, frôlant les frontières avec l’électro, le post métal ou encore le hardcore. Expliquons nous : Si on prends « Your Ghost’, titre d’ouverture de l’album, on retrouve un rythme parfait pour faire du 2-step, et pourtant, c’est une grosse partie instrumentale qui finit sur un son plus électronique qui vient totalement changé la donne du morceau. Chacun des titres est plutôt composé de la même manière avec ces passages instrumentaux laissant toute la place aux musiciens. On note assez facilement les inspirations de chacun et nul doute que le post métal d’Amenra est caché dans la partie guitare la plus calme de « Distant Melody ». On commence à connaitre la passion d’Oriane au chant pour Spiritbox, ce qui se ressent dans le travail de versatilité de sa voix, sans jamais en devenir une copie.

Les lillois nous proposent donc 7 titres qui prennent l’espace, sans jamais de temps morts. Les compositions sont assez denses mais prennent une certaine légèreté avec les sonorités électroniques qui s’ajoutent tout au long des compositions. Le morceau « What You Believe » est le morceau le plus pop de l’EP, introduisant même une partie piano. On est totalement convaincu par les parties les plus métal de l’album, porté par une section rythmique assez importante, surplombant le chant screamé, avec « Fireflies » comme apogée. Un gros riff pour lancer le morceau, un refrain hyper catchy, et un son très propre.

AĦNA clôturent deux ans de travail dans cet EP, représentant assez bien leur univers. Nul doute qu’il faudra compter sur eux pour représenter Lille sur des plateaux à la fois pop punk que metalcore. Et c’est ce qui fait la force du groupe, rester proche de pleins de styles musicaux, sans paraitre fouillis. Un grand bravo.

When we’re asked “What are the modern metal, metalcore bands in Lille?”, the name AĦNA is one of the first to spring to mind, and yet the band are only releasing their very first EP, Waves, this September 27th. Suffice to say, they’ve managed to make a name for themselves on the local scene, and are now adding another stone to the monument they’re building.

Since their creation in 2022, AĦNA have toured the region’s venues and small festivals, making their mark every time they play. Now a household name, they were able to launch the creation of their first EP, Waves, via crowdfunding on the Ulule platform. The public responded, and the financing closed at 127%, giving the band the strength they need to finalize their launch arc. Yes, since 2022, the four friends have been introducing us to their music, both electric and acoustic, via clips and on platforms, but it was time for them to freeze it all in an EP. If you’ve already seen the band live, no doubt you’ll recognize some of the tracks on this EP, but let’s take the time to listen to it, as a real discovery.

AĦNA‘s metal is full of inspirations that make for an album in its own right. They offer alternative metal compositions, skirting the borders with electro, post-metal and even hardcore. Let’s explain: If we take “Your Ghost”, the album’s opening track, we find a perfect 2-step rhythm, and yet it’s a big instrumental part that ends on a more electronic sound that totally changes the song. Each track is composed in much the same way, with instrumental passages leaving the musicians free rein. It’s easy to see where the inspiration comes from, and there’s no doubt that Amenra’s post-metal sound is hidden in the calmer guitar part of “Distant Melody”. Oriane’s passion for Spiritbox on vocals is well known, and this is reflected in the versatility of her voice, without ever becoming a copy.

The band from Lille offer us 7 tracks that take up the space, with never a dull moment. The compositions are fairly dense, but take on a certain lightness with the electronic sounds that are added throughout. The track “What You Believe” is the most pop of the EP, even introducing a piano part. We’re totally convinced by the album’s more metal parts, driven by a sizeable rhythm section, overhanging the screamed vocals, with “Fireflies” as the climax. A big riff to kick off the track, a hyper catchy chorus, and a very clean sound.

AĦNA close two years of work on this EP, which represents their universe quite well. No doubt they’ll be a force to be reckoned with when it comes to representing Lille on stages ranging from pop punk to metalcore. And that’s the band’s strength, staying close to many musical styles, without sounding cluttered. A big bravo.
