Lors du tout premier Dark Lab concocté par IMC, la crème du milieu Goth/Darkwave/Post-punk, et The Black Lab qui avait lieu le samedi 2 novembre pour fêter la fête des morts, tous les Goths étaient réunis pour un max de bruit et de mélancolie. Il y en avait pour tous les goûts, du plus dark au plus excentrique. Une soirée plus que réussi jusqu’au bout de la nuit, avec six groupes d’exception : Partikul, Denuit, Dageist, Bragolin, les fougueux Das Ich, les incontournables Rosa Crux, et un after party avec Sampler et Sans Reproches DJ Set, rien que ça. Clairement, une soirée comme ça, ça ne s’oublie pas.

On commence la soirée tranquillement mais sûrement avec nos voisins Belges de Partikul. Le duo nous vient de Bruxelles et se sont formés en 2024. Encore fraîchement arrivé depuis quelques années mais déjà un gros potentiel. Une parfaite première partie pour bien commencer ce Dark Lab, qui séduit de suite le public de connaisseurs du style Goth/Darkwave/Post-punk. Avec des rythmiques frénétiques, presque hypnotiques, des mélodies de guitares enivrantes et une capacité plus que plaisante à entraîner nos oreilles à leur son envoûtant, le tout avec une voix totalement ensorcelante et c’est de suite la magie qui opère sans tarder. Avec deux albums à leur actif, Related Memories (paru en 2022) et Having Gone (paru en 2023), le duo est plus que prometteur dans les années à venir, et nous à déjà prouvé, pas plus tard que lors de cette parfaite première partie en guise d’ouverture du Dark Lab, que leur son Post Punk rétro couplé à des rythmiques électro modernes à su parfaitement faire preuve en élaborant aux maximum ses capacités musicales dignes de ce nom.

Encore un duo, cette fois-ci de chez nous, plus particulièrement de Montpellier mené par Lis Araignée aux vocaux et Ivi Topp au synthé. Cette fois on plonge dans le Goth mixé à une Electro froide et sensuelle, limite intimiste, qui vient vous chercher au fond des draps pour mieux vous faire frissonner un soir d’hiver. Tout y est, variation des mélodies, tantôt rapides, contrôlées ou encore savamment harmonisées avec ce synthé progressant entre grâce et volupté dans un univers de fête sombre qui en dit long. Denuit nous offre une atmosphère sexy, luxurieuse en vous donnant envie de danser sous une pleine lune rouge sang, et c’est clairement envoûtant. Avec des lyrics en Anglais comme en Français, ils évoluent dans une atmosphère à la fois brute comme délicate, jusqu’à la naïveté presque enfantine qui vient s’amuser avec vous dans une drôle de farce espiègle et malicieuse. Avec trois albums à leur actif, Black Sun paru en 2021, Inferno en 2022, Ritual en 2023 et un show à la perfection, ce furent de très gros applaudissements pour Denuit, qui à largement séduit.

Oh tiens, un petit chouchou du coin ! J’ai nommé Dageist qui nous vient de Lille. On reste toujours dans les duo, avec Schago aux vocaux et Fred à la basse. On file de suite dans une veine beaucoup plus branchée années 80, où l’on se replonge dans les mélodies du passé qui ont bercé nos jeunes années. Dageist est un savant mélange de Pop, Rock, et d’Electro travaillées au millimètre près, flirtant avec la New Wave, entraînées par des rythmiques électro et suivies de la voix grave et profonde de Schago, menant sa barque sereinement, mais à la fois puissamment. Fred nous enivre de sa basse flottante, aérienne et délicieusement répétitive, nous donnant l’impression de sombrer dans une rêverie teintée de nostalgie délicatement triste, morose, mais à la fois absolument magnifique de par les mélodies captivantes que nous proposent Dageist. Avec deux albums à leur actif, 40 paru en 2015 puis Sexy en 2019, Dageist restent toujours fidèle à eux-mêmes une référence dans le paysage musical des Hauts-de-France. Et même chez les Goths, la fête est présente, car c’était effectivement l’anniversaire de Fred le même soir, qui eu droit à un magnifique lâché de ballons noirs s’envolant vers un public enthousiaste et amusé, avec la présence de sa fille sur scène lors du final de leur show, qui rejoint son papa avec une guitare miniature. Moment magique gravé dans le temps tellement c’était touchant. Sans oublier le petit mot de Fred qui remercia les groupes avec gratitude, ainsi que toute l’équipe de The Black Lab, car son anniversaire tombait forcément pile le jour où il organisa The Dark Lab histoire de fêter ça comme il se doit. Le tout suivi d’une superbe pièce montée en l’honneur de Dageist qui arriva sur scène peu après. Un instant extraordinaire, qui laissera place lors de cette soirée, à tant d’éclatants mystères.

Un peu plus loin que la Belgique, cette fois on s’arrête aux Pays-Bas, plus précisément à Utrecht avec le Post punk absolument magnifique de Bragolin. A nouveau un duo, comme les trois précédents qui nous a clairement ensorcelé de par l’intensité et la profondeur de leur mélodies. C’est beau, frais, polarisant et étonnement fascinant, tendant à la fois vers la lumière, que dans la noirceur. Le duo, mené par Edwin van der Velde aux vocaux et à la guitare, nous propose une palette impressionnante de sonorités toutes droit sorties des années 80, influencées par la guitare baritone et le Shoegaze, des synthés et drum machines, et des orgues des années 60/70, le tout lié à des lyrics postapocalyptiques et de films d’horreur. Mais aussi tout en faisant référence au peintre Bragolin de par leur même nom, connu pour ses peintures d’enfants qui pleurent. La musique de Bragolin nous plonge dans une désolation des plus totale, lié à un assombrissement mélodique, comme un cafard noir qui vient nous gratouiller derrière l’oreille avec une certaine forme de répétition dont on s’y habituerait presque. Une consternation qui en dit long sur un état dépressif qui frôle délicatement et avec finesse, une splendeur délectable dans laquelle nous absorbe l’univers musical de Bragolin. Avec deux albums dont I Saw Nothing Good So I Left paru en 2018 et Let Out the Noise Inside en 2019, Bragolin aura conquis avec aisance et assurance le public de The Black Lab qui en a été absolument ravi jusqu’à se laisser enivré à en être totalement extasié.

On passe maintenant à une vitesse supérieure avec les cultissimes Das Ich. Venus de Bayreuth en Allemagne, on a été s’enfoncer encore plus loin pour vous dégoter des perles du genre. Flirtant en pleine Darkwave, Electro-Industrial, Indus et Dark Ambient, Le tout premier trio de cette soirée qui ne fût jusqu’à présent armé que de duo, nous offre un savant mélange d’électronique dark et complètement azimutée, dans un univers loufoque, barré, et admirablement cintré. Le groupe est un des pionniers de la Neue Deutsche Todeskunt (nouvel art allemand de la mort), genre musical ayant émergé en Allemagne au début des années 90, dont on attribue l’implantation de la langue allemande dans le mouvement Dark Wave. Un mix de style qui en dit long sur l’atmosphère à venir, tellement Das Ich sont véritablement les maîtres en la matière. On commence d’abord avec une longue intro médiévale sinistre et ténébreuse, comme une première mise en bouche avant un show peuplé d’étrangetés et de bizarreries en tout genre, le tout baignant dans la plus grande extravagance musicale, flirtant parfois presque avec la folie. On se régale d’une magnificence absolue, jusqu’au déchaînement final qui nous emporta tous dans une déflagration magistrale. Un show de toute beauté, entre la voix flirtant avec la folie de Stefan Ackermann, l’Électronique magistralement orchestré par Bruno Kramm et son fidèle acolyte qui nous offrirent des danses de synthé des plus fantastiques, Das Ich nous envoie directement tout droit dans un univers peuplé de trolls des cavernes, de lutins démoniaques, et de démons en tout genre. Avec 14 albums à leur actif et une tripotée de morceaux complètement dingues, c’était un pur plaisir de pouvoir assister à un show aussi fantasque, clownesque qui nous aura fait passer une heure avec les mythiques Das Ich absolument extraordinaire. Das Ich, ou littéralement l’une des perles de The Dark Lab.

En parlant de perles, nous voici enfin arrivé à la consécration, le grand final de The Dark Lab avec Rosa Crux, un groupe qui nous vient à nouveau de chez nous. Formés le 19 Avril 1984 à Rouen, Rosa Crux (ou Rosa†Crvx) est une formation musicale majeure de la scène Gothique Française, se réclamant eux-même du style Dark Ritual, avec un univers sombre, mélancolique, rituel et parfois assez martial. La particularité du groupe est qu’ils chantent en latin, nous plongeant de suite dans un ensemble musical à la fois beau, fort, émotionnel et complexe. Mené par Olivier Tarabo aux vocaux et à la guitare, et de Claude Feeny qui oscille aisément entre piano, carillon et backing vocaux, le public de The Black Lab a été très rapidement charmé en se plaisant à se laisser aller aux sonorités étranges et captivantes que nous offrait aussi une joueuse de cornemuse sur certains morceaux, ainsi qu’Olivier Tarabo et sa horde de quatre squelettes trônant fièrement derrière lui en arrière scène, le tout monté sur des mécaniques, un procédé électromagnétique qu’Olivier Tarabo inventa en 1995 lui permettant d’actionner des baguettes de tambour de façon précise, reproduisant à la perfection des rythmiques guerrières et presque militaires. On est dans le grandiose, le monumental, et l’éléphantesque tellement la puissance de leurs sonorités nous prennent de la tête aux pieds, et surtout par les oreilles, en pénétrant nos âmes tel de misérables mortels. Rosa Crux à l’art et la manière de savoir faire parler les morts dans les voix des vivants, et surtout dans leurs oreilles, tout en nous laissant, bouche bée, entre admiration et stupéfaction. On a comme la sensation d’être le jour de notre dernier jugement, et l’on sent que ça va trancher. La théâtralité de leur musique frôle divinement le grandiose tellement le tout est majestueux orchestré. Entre sonorités de guitares angoissantes, cloches percutantes, cornemuse hypnotique, le tout parfaitement harmonisé avec la voix d’Olivier Tarabo, et ce ne pouvait être qu’une représentation à la limite du fantasmagorique. Avec un total de trois albums absolument magistraux dont Proficere autoproduit en 1995, Noctes Insomnes autoproduit en 1998, In Tenebris autoproduit en 2002 et 16 titres extraordinaires joué lors de ce tout premier Dark Lab, dont entre autres « Declinate », « Terribilis » et « Incorrupti », puis suivi par une magnifique performance par deux danseuses lors de “la Danse de la Terre” en plein milieu de The Black Lab, accompagnant leur tout dernier morceau “Eli-Elo”, c’est avec une profonde gratitude que le public de The Black Lab a remercié Rosa Crux de son époustouflante venue.

Et pour clôturer ce tout premier Dark Lab qui s’est passé dans toute sa splendeur et au meilleur de son apogée, les deux excellents DJ et animateurs radio Greg et Walter de l’émission Sampler et Sans Reproches tout les lundi de 20h à 22h sur Galaxie Radio 95.3 FM, nous ont fait danser jusqu’au bout de la nuit sur des sons phares des années 80, avec leur EBM/Industrial/Cold Wave/Synthpop j’en passe et des meilleures, pour le plus grand plaisir de tous les noctambules de la dernière heure.

The very first Dark Lab, organised by IMC, the cream of the Goth/Darkwave/Post-punk scene, and The Black Lab, took place on Saturday 2 November to celebrate the Day of the Dead, and brought together all the Goths for a maximum of noise and melancholy. There was something for everyone, from the darkest to the most eccentric. The evening went on like clockwork, with six exceptional bands: Partikul, Denuit, Dageist, Bragolin, the fiery Das Ich, the unmissable Rosa Crux, and an after party with Sampler and Sans Reproches DJ Set, no less. Clearly, an evening like this is not to be forgotten.

The evening gets off to a slow but sure start with our Belgian neighbours Partikul. The duo hail from Brussels and were formed in 2024. They’ve only been around for a few years, but they’ve already got great potential. A perfect opening act to get this Dark Lab off to a good start, immediately winning over an audience of Goth/Darkwave/Post-punk connoisseurs. With frenetic, almost hypnotic rhythms, intoxicating guitar melodies and an uncanny ability to draw our ears into their spellbinding sound, all topped off with a totally bewitching voice, the magic starts to happen straight away. With two albums to their credit, Related Memories (released in 2022) and Having Gone (released in 2023), the duo are more than promising for the years to come, and they’ve already proved, as recently as their perfect opening slot at Dark Lab, that their retro post-punk sound coupled with modern electro rhythms is a perfect example of their musical abilities.

Another duo, this time from Montpellier, led by Lis Araignée on vocals and Ivi Topp on synths. This time it’s Goth mixed with cold, sensual, almost intimate Electro, which reaches deep into your sheets to send shivers down your spine on a winter’s evening. It’s all there, the melodies varying from fast and controlled to skilfully harmonised with a synth that moves between grace and voluptuousness in a dark party world that speaks volumes. Denuit gives us a sexy, lustful atmosphere that makes you want to dance under a blood-red full moon, and it’s clearly bewitching. With lyrics in both English and French, they create an atmosphere that’s both raw and delicate, right down to the almost childlike naivety that plays along with you in a mischievous, mischievous farce. With three albums to their credit, Black Sun released in 2021, Inferno in 2022 and Ritual in 2023, and a show to perfection, the applause for Denuit was overwhelming.

Oh look, a local favourite! Dageist from Lille. It’s still a duo affair, with Schago on vocals and Fred on bass. But we’re moving straight into a much more 80s vein, where we’re immersed in the melodies of the past that rocked our youth. Dageist is a skilful blend of Pop, Rock and Electro worked to the millimetre, flirting with New Wave, driven by electro rhythms and followed by Schago‘s deep, gravelly voice, steering his ship serenely, but at the same time powerfully. Fred intoxicates us with his floating, ethereal and deliciously repetitive bass, giving us the impression of sinking into a nostalgic reverie that is delicately sad and morose, but at the same time absolutely magnificent, thanks to the captivating melodies that Dageist offer us. With two albums to their credit, 40 released in 2015 and Sexy in 2019, Dageist remain a benchmark in the Hauts-de-France music scene. And even the Goths are celebrating, as it was Fred ‘s birthday that evening, with a magnificent release of black balloons flying towards an enthusiastic and amused audience, and the presence of his daughter on stage during the finale of their show, who joins her daddy with a miniature guitar. It was a magical moment, so touching that it will live on forever. Not forgetting a few words from Fred, who gratefully thanked the bands, as well as the whole team at The Black Lab, as his birthday happened to fall on the very day he was organising The Dark Lab to celebrate in style. All this was followed by a superb pièce montée in honour of Dageist, who arrived on stage shortly afterwards. It was an extraordinary moment, and one that would give way to so many dazzling mysteries that evening.

A little further afield than Belgium, this time we stop off in the Netherlands, in Utrecht to be precise, with the absolutely magnificent post-punk of Bragolin. Once again a duo, like their three predecessors, who have clearly bewitched us with the intensity and depth of their melodies. It’s beautiful, fresh, polarising and astonishingly fascinating, tending both towards the light and the dark. The duo, led by Edwin van der Velde on vocals and guitar, offer us an impressive palette of sounds straight out of the 80s, influenced by baritone guitar and shoegaze, synths and drum machines, and organs from the 60s and 70s, all linked to post-apocalyptic and horror film lyrics. But it’s also a reference to the painter Bragolin, famous for his paintings of crying children. Bragolin ‘s music plunges us into total desolation, linked to a melodic darkening, like a black cockroach scratching at the back of our ears with a certain form of repetition that we almost get used to. It’s a dismay that speaks volumes about a depressive state that delicately and finely borders on the delectable splendour in which Bragolin‘s musical universe absorbs us. With two albums to his name, including I Saw Nothing Good So I Left released in 2018 and Let Out the Noise Inside in 2019, Bragolin has easily and confidently won over the audience at The Black Lab, who were absolutely delighted to the point of being intoxicated to the point of being totally ecstatic.

Now we’re moving up a gear with the cult-classic Das Ich. Hailing from Bayreuth in Germany, we’ve gone even further afield to unearth some gems of the genre. Flirting with Darkwave, Electro-Industrial, Indus and Dark Ambient, the very first trio of the evening, who until now have only been armed with a duo, offer us a clever mix of dark and completely crazy electronics, in a zany, crazy and admirably curved universe. The band are one of the pioneers of the Neue Deutsche Todeskunt (New German Art of Death), a musical genre that emerged in Germany in the early 90s and is credited with introducing the German language into the Dark Wave movement. It’s a mix of styles that says a lot about the atmosphere to come, as Das Ich are truly masters of their craft. We begin with a long, sinister, dark medieval intro, like a first appetiser before a show full of strangeness and weirdness of all kinds, all bathed in the greatest musical extravagance, at times almost flirting with madness. It’s a feast of absolute magnificence, right up to the final outburst that sweeps us all away in a masterful explosion. A beautiful show, with Stefan Ackermann‘s vocals flirting with madness, and Bruno Kramm and his faithful sidekick orchestrating some fantastic synth dances, Das Ich sent us straight into a universe populated by cave trolls, demonic goblins and demons of all kinds. With 14 albums to their credit and a whole host of completely mad tracks, it was a pure pleasure to be able to attend such a whimsical, clownish show, which gave us the chance to spend an absolutely extraordinary hour with the mythical Das Ich. Das Ich, or literally one of The Dark Lab‘s gems.

Speaking of pearls, we’ve finally reached the consecration, the grand finale of The Dark Lab with Rosa Crux, a band that once again comes to us from home. Formed on 19 April 1984 in Rouen, Rosa Crux (or Rosa†Crvx) is a major musical group on the French Gothic scene, claiming to be Dark Ritual themselves, with a dark, melancholy, ritualistic and sometimes quite martial universe. The band’s distinctive feature is that they sing in Latin, immediately immersing us in a beautiful, strong, emotional and complex musical whole. Led by Olivier Tarabo on vocals and guitar, and Claude Feeny who moves effortlessly between piano, carillon and backing vocals, the audience at The Black Lab was quickly charmed by the strange and captivating sounds that a bagpiper also played on some of the tracks, Olivier Tarabo and his horde of four skeletons stood proudly behind him in the background, all mounted on mechanics, an electromagnetic process invented by Olivier Tarabo in 1995 that enables him to operate drum sticks precisely, reproducing warlike, almost military rhythms to perfection. It’s grandiose, monumental and elephantine, the power of their sounds taking us from head to toe, and above all through the ears, penetrating our souls like wretched mortals. Rosa Crux has the art and manner of making the dead speak in the voices of the living, and above all in their ears, leaving us breathless with admiration and amazement. It’s as if it’s the day of our final judgement, and we can feel that it’s going to be a decisive one. The theatricality of their music verges divinely on the grandiose, so majestically orchestrated is the whole thing. An eerie guitar sound, percussive bells, hypnotic bagpipes, all perfectly harmonised withOlivier Tarabo‘s voice, and it could only be a performance bordering on the phantasmagorical. With a total of three absolutely masterful albums, including Proficere, self-released in 1995, Noctes Insomnes, self-released in 1998, In Tenebris, self-released in 2002, and 16 extraordinary tracks played at this very first Dark Lab, including ‘Declinate’, ‘Terribilis’ and ‘Incorrupti’, Then followed by a magnificent performance by two dancers during the ‘Earth Dance’ in the middle of The Black Lab, accompanying their latest track ‘Eli-Elo’, it was with deep gratitude that the audience at The Black Lab thanked Rosa Crux for their breathtaking appearance.

And to round off this first Dark Lab in all its splendour and at the height of its popularity, two excellent DJs and radio presenters, Greg and Walter, from the Sampler et Sans Reproches programme on Galaxie Radio 95.3 FM every Monday from 8pm to 10pm, kept us dancing until the end of the night to the key sounds of the 80s, with their EBM/Industrial/Cold Wave/Synthpop, to the delight of all the late-nighters.
