On ne présente plus le quintet californien de Stick To Your Guns. Veritable porte d’entrée au hardcore durant les années fin 2000 début 2010, Jesse et sa bande reviennent avec un nouvel album, Keep Planting Flowers,  via Sharptone Records ce 10 janvier 2025. Trois ans après Spectre, qui avait été globalement bien accueilli par la critique après un sevrage de presque 5 ans après True View. Ce nouvel album dans ces featuring nous permet de faire une certaine jonction de générations avec Scott Vogel (Terror) sur un titre ainsi que Connie Sgarbossa (SeeyouSpaceCowboy) sur un autre.

Les thématiques du groupe ne sont pas prêtes d’être changées, Jesse garde la même conviction que le nihilisme ne nous mènera nulle part et nous sollicite à préférer une certaine positivité où un futur est possible. Cette possibilité ne vient pas de gaieté de cœur mais bien de la rage et l’âme que nous mettons dans chacun de nos combats respectifs afin de faire de demain, un avenir viable. C’est dans ce sens que l’album commence avec “We all Die Anyway” qui a un petit air de “Hard Time”  de Cro Mags sur le riff de début des passages caractéristiques Stick to your Guns. Des riffs syncopés pour venir piquer le micro du chanteur et où se lancer dans un stage dive, la deuxième guitare venant faire une ligne assez simple mais aérienne pour mettre en avant les paroles pour finir sur le refrain avec les deux guitares jouant le même riff pour faire un effet mur de son. 

En grand classique de la nouvelle ère, nous avons déjà la moitié de l’album sorti au compte goutte au moment de la sortie, avec “Permanent Dark” et “Invisible Rain” déjà présents dans l’EP sorti courant 2024. Assez original d’entendre un petit passage voix clair falsetto qui change de ce qu’on peut avoir d’habitude avec Stick To Your Guns. “Invisible Rain” comme dit plus tôt, nous pousse toujours à nous battre, le titre fait aussi référence au philosophe et écrivain marxiste italien Antonio Gramsci “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters“ (traduisez : « L’ancien monde se meurt et le nouveau monde peine à naître : c’est le temps des monstres. » Un clin d’œil à son concept de l’hégémonie culturelle sur laquelle il se repose afin d’énoncer que la conquête du pouvoir présuppose celle de l’opinion publique. Malheureusement on retombe dans les travers de Stick to your guns, avec des titres comme “More than a Witness” qui reprend un riff de “Built upon the Sand”, “Keep planting Flowers” est l’archétype de la chanson cathartique du groupe avec un début doux comme a pu nous proposer “It start with me” ou “The Suspend”. 

Malgré cela, l’album nous propose quelques propositions qui permettent au groupe de ne pas se reposer sur leurs lauriers. On peut retrouver “Severed Forever” avec un début de morceau très punk permettant de mettre en avant les émotions. “Spineless” avec un riff de début qui serait parfait pour une ouverture d’un tournoi de League of Legends. Mais surtout la grande surprise de l’album , le featuring avec Connie de SYSC. Étant en tournée, les enregistrements ont été fait dans différents studios et le groupe a dû choisir ce qui allait être récupéré pour être importés dans la chanson. En sort un titre explosif, clôturant parfaitement l’album. La fin de “H84U” boucle avec le début de “We all Die” avec cette pelle qui creuse avec comme leitmotiv cette vie qui est un éternel combat.

Avec cet album Keep Planting Flowers , nous voyons le nouveau chemin que Stick to your Guns est en train de prendre avec des riffs plus punk mais toujours aussi engagé. Ils sont le parfait exemple de groupe qui rassemble ancienne et nouvelle génération. Ce lien avec la nouvelle génération va encore se diversifier avec leur tournée où il ramène No Cure, groupe straight edge formé en 2021, qu’on retrouvera pendant la tournée de ce mois de Janvier.

Le groupe sera en tournée à travers l’Europe avec Bodysnatcher, Elwood Stray et No Cure, avec entre autre des dates au Trabendo de Paris le 25 janvier, à l’Ancienne Belgique de Bruxelles le 26 janvier, à La Rayonne de Lyon le 28 janvier et à La Cabane de Toulouse le 2 février prochain.

The Californian quintet Stick To Your Guns need no introduction. A veritable gateway to hardcore during the late 2000s and early 2010s, Jesse and his band are back with a new album, Keep Planting Flowers, via Sharptone Records this January 10th, 2025. Three years after Spectre, which was generally well received by the critics after a 5-year break from True View. This new album’s featuring allows us to make a certain generation junction with Scott Vogel (Terror) on one track and Connie Sgarbossa (SeeyouSpaceCowboy) on another.

The band’s themes are not about to change, and Jesse remains convinced that nihilism will get us nowhere, urging us to prefer a certain positivity where a future is possible. This possibility doesn’t come out of the blue, but out of the rage and soul we put into each of our respective battles to make tomorrow a viable future. With this in mind, the album opens with “We all Die Anyway”, which has a hint of Cro Mags‘ “Hard Time” on the opening riff of the characteristic Stick to your Guns passages. Syncopated riffs to mic grab and stage dive, with the second guitar playing a simple but airy line to highlight the lyrics, and ending on the chorus with both guitars playing the same riff to create a wall-of-sound effect.

As a great classic of the new era, we’ve already got half the album out in bits and pieces, with “Permanent Dark” and “Invisible Rain” already present on the EP released in 2024. Quite original to hear a little falsetto clear voice passage, which is a change from what we’re used to with Stick To Your Guns. On “Invisible Rain”, as we said earlier, we’re always urged to fight, and the title also refers to the Italian Marxist philosopher and writer Antonio Gramsci: “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters”. A nod to his concept of cultural hegemony, on which he relies to state that the conquest of power presupposes the conquest of public opinion. Unfortunately, we fall back into the ways of Stick to your guns, with tracks like “More than a Witness”, which takes a riff from “Built upon the Sand”, and “Keep planting Flowers”, the archetypal cathartic song from the band, with a gentle opening like “It start with me” or “The Suspend”.

In spite of this, the album offers us a few suggestions that allow the band not to rest on their laurels. There’s “Severed Forever”, with a very punk opening that brings emotions to the fore. “Spineless” with an opening riff that would be perfect for the opening of a League of Legends tournament. But above all, the album’s big surprise, featuring Connie from SYSC. Being on tour, the recordings were made in different studios and the band had to choose what would be recovered to be imported into the song. The result is a track that explodes and ends the album perfectly. The end of “H84U” closes with the start of “We all Die”, with the shovel digging and the leitmotif of life as an eternal struggle.

With this album, Keep Planting Flowers, we see the new path Stick to your Guns are taking, with more punk riffs but still as committed as ever. They are the perfect example of a band that brings together old and new generations. This link with the new generation will be further diversified on their tour, where they are bringing back No Cure, a straight-edge band formed in 2021, who we’ll be seeing on this January’s tour.
