Cette semaine, découvrons donc le tout premier album éponyme de you, infinite, dont la sortie se fait chez Pelagic Records. C’est un pur retour au source du post rock qui nous est proposé par Jeremy Galindo et Raymond Brown, membre fondateur de This Will Destroy You. Une discographie grandiose dans leur groupe d’origine, qui annonce d’entrée de jeu que ce nouveau projet va être de qualité. Et on ne s’y trompe pas ! Dès le titre d’ouverture « Focus On Reflection », l’auditeur est envoyé en apesanteur tel un astronaute regardant la terre scintiller. Le titre pourrait rejoindre la B.O. du prochain Terrence Malick pour une virée côté science fiction. Ce sentiment d’apesanteur sera d’autant plus parlant sur « Cutter » et son piano. La première partie de cet album est assez calme, avec un vrai sentiment de nostalgie qui en ressort, même si la batterie est légèrement mixé au dessus des autres instruments sur « Throughlines ». Chaque morceau offre une vraie montée en puissance sur les sonorités environnantes, même quand les guitares se lancent dans de belles boucles, notamment sur « Loop 20 ».

On ressent un vrai virage à partir de « The Elder », morceau beaucoup plus mature où le son est plus saturé et distordu que sur les autres compositions de l’album. Signe d’une certaine expérience en tant que musicien ? Il est évident que you infinite offre à ce morceau un vrai clin d’oeil au fuzz et stoner, avant d’enchainer avec « Currents » et ce petit côté jazzy en ouverture.

Qui dit post rock, dit long morceau. Le mastodonte arrive avec « Understated » et ses 11 minutes de pur beauté. Chaque instrument se réponds et le titre, aussi calme qu’il soit vient superposer les couches sonores pour un morceau assez dense. De belles sonorités assez chaudes, notamment sur « Shine Eternal » et ses changements d’ambiance. « Dormant » clôturera l’album, en nous rappelant étonnamment certaines compositions de Quentin Sauvé sur son album Enjoy The View.

Ce premier album de you, infinite est une vraie réussite, confirmant notre amour pour le post rock, et le travail de This Will Destroy You en général. Cet album nous emporte totalement dans une aventure 100% instrumentale mais pleine de sens. Une expérience d’écoute totalement transcendante qui s’annonce spirituelle et émotionnelle en live.

Jeremy Galindo and Raymond Brown, founding members of This Will Destroy You, offer us a pure return to the roots of post rock. With an impressive discography in their original band, this new project is sure to be of the highest quality. And there’s no mistaking it! Right from the opening track “Focus On Reflection”, the listener is sent weightless, like an astronaut watching the earth shimmer. The track could join the soundtrack of the next Terrence Malick film for a trip into science fiction. This feeling of weightlessness is all the more evident on “Cutter” and its piano. The first part of the album is fairly quiet, with a real sense of nostalgia coming through, even if the drums are slightly mixed above the other instruments on “Throughlines”. Each track offers a real build-up of power over the surrounding sounds, even when the guitars launch into beautiful loops, notably on “Loop 20”.

A real turnaround can be felt from “The Elder”, a much more mature track where the sound is more saturated and distorted than on the other compositions on the album. Is this a sign of experience as a musician? Clearly, you infinite gives this track a real nod to fuzz and stoner, before moving on to “Currents” and its jazzy opening.

Post-rock means long tracks. The mastodon arrives with “Understated” and its 11 minutes of pure beauty. Each instrument responds to the other, and the track, calm as it is, superimposes layers of sound for a fairly dense piece. Beautiful, warm sounds, particularly on “Shine Eternal” and its changes of mood. “Dormant” closes the album, surprisingly reminiscent of some of Quentin Sauvé’s compositions on his album Enjoy The View.

This first album from you, infinite is a real success, confirming our love for post rock, and the work of This Will Destroy You in general. This album takes us on a 100% instrumental adventure, full of meaning. A totally transcendent listening experience that promises to be spiritual and emotional live.
