Pour terminer le mois de février en beauté, les russes de Grima nous proposent de découvrir leur sixième album studio. Intitulé Nightside, il est disponible depuis le 28 février via Napalm Records. Une nouvelle plongée dans les forêts de Sibérie nous attends dans ces 10 nouveaux titres du duo. Pour cet album les deux musiciens sont accompagnés de Vlad à la batterie et Serpentum aux guitares.

L’album s’ouvre sur une intro de guitares magnifiques qui sont rapidement rejointes par le byan, un accordéon russe, qui accompagnera le disque tout du long. La voix de Vilhelm est magistrale dans le premier titre « Beyond the Dark Horizon », tout comme le trio guitares qu’il porte avec Morbius et Serpentum. Sur le titre suivant on voit toute la force du duo à sublimer un instrument peu habituel dans le black métal avec de magnifiques orchestrations. Les morceaux longs permettent à chaque musicien de s’illustrer de la plus belle des manières. La double ligne de chant de « Skull Gatherers » nous prend aux tripes avec toujours ces lignes d’accordéon venant parfaire des riffs ciselés. La formation n’oublie pas sa langue natale avec des parties en russe dans « Impending Death Premonition », véritable merveille musicale de cet album, tout comme le morceau titre qui colle des frissons en quelques instants. D’ailleurs dans le morceau cité le groupe s’autorise une ligne de chant plus death métal avec des growls parfaitement maîtrisés. La force du projet se trouve dans un black métal mélodieux à souhait qui sait laisser aux hurlements de Vilhelm la place qu’ils méritent. Le voyage musical offert par le duo russe et leurs invités ne cesse de surprendre titre après titre. L’univers du duo est captivant et « We Are The Lost » nous le confirme une fois de plus avec une composition taillée pour tout emporter sur son passage. Dans ‘Curse Of The Void » des choeurs en chant clair viennent compléter les hurlements du chanteur dans une pièce qui ne manquera pas de vous coller une fois de plus de beaux frissons dès la première écoute. On arrive déjà à la fin de ce disque avec « Mist and Fog » et l’outro qui complètent notre aventure avec encore une fois de sublimes envolées musicales comme on les adore.
Avec Nightside, Grima viennent parfaire un univers musical et visuel des plus riches. Ce disque regorge de pépites vers les quelles on aura aucun mal à se replonger. L’écoute est captivante de bout en bout et clairement sublimée par l’usage du byan tout au long du disque. Cet instrument encre toujours plus le groupe dans ses terres russes et vient nous apporter des sonorités qu’on adore voir compléter un black métal des plus mélodieux.

To round off February in style, Russian band Grima have released their sixth studio album. Entitled Nightside, it has been available since 28 February via Napalm Records. The duo’s 10 new tracks take us on another plunge into the forests of Siberia. For this album, the two musicians are accompanied by Vlad on drums and Serpentum on guitars.
The album opens with an intro of magnificent guitars, quickly joined by the byan, a Russian accordion, which accompanies the album throughout. Vilhelm‘s voice is masterful on the opening track ‘Beyond the Dark Horizon’, as is the guitar trio he carries with Morbius and Serpentum. The following track shows the duo’s strength in sublimating an unusual instrument in black metal with magnificent orchestrations. The longer tracks give each musician a chance to shine. The double vocal line on ‘Skull Gatherers’ takes you by storm, with the accordion lines adding the finishing touches to the chiselled riffs. The band don’t forget their native tongue, either, with parts in Russian on ‘Impending Death Premonition’, the album’s musical marvel, just like the title track, which sends shivers down your spine in a matter of moments. In the aforementioned track, the band also allow themselves a more death metal vocal line, with perfectly controlled growls. The project’s strength lies in its melodious black metal, which gives Vilhelm‘s screams their rightful place. The musical journey offered by the Russian duo and their guests never ceases to surprise track after track. The duo’s universe is captivating, and ‘We Are The Lost’ confirms this once again with a composition designed to sweep away everything in its path. In ‘Curse Of The Void’, the singer’s screams are complemented by clear backing vocals in a track that’s sure to send shivers down your spine from the very first listen. We’ve already come to the end of the album, with ‘Mist and Fog’ and the outro rounding off our adventure with another of the sublime musical flights of fancy we’ve come to love.
With Nightside, Grima complete a rich musical and visual universe. The record is packed with gems that will be hard to resist. The listening experience is captivating from start to finish, and clearly enhanced by the use of the byan throughout. The use of the byan throughout the album is clearly sublime, inking the band ever more deeply into their Russian roots and bringing us sounds that we love to see complementing their melodious black metal.
