Thornhill sont de retour avec BODIES, leur troisième album studio, qui sortira le 4 avril via UNFD. Originaire de Melbourne, le groupe d’alt metal a toujours su se réinventer, et cette fois-ci, plutôt que d’élaborer un album conceptuel comme le précédent Heroine, ils ont cherché à capturer ce que Thornhill incarne en ce moment : à la fois féroce et vulnérable. S’éloignant de la production soignée de leurs précédents travaux, BODIES embrasse une énergie plus brute, plus instinctive – urgente, intense et spontanée. Bien que l’album conserve le poids émotionnel et l’intensité qui définissent le quatuor, il introduit également une énergie festive inattendue, donnant l’impression d’une bande-son de fête tordue trempée dans la passion, l’obsession et l’autodestruction.

S’ouvrant sur « DIESEL », l’album donne immédiatement le ton avec des guitares djenty et une lourdeur implacable, un morceau conçu pour que nous commencions à headbanger dès la première note. « Revolver » suit sans transition, se calmant momentanément avant de plonger dans une intensité saisissante, imprégnée de nu-metal. Le contraste entre l’agressivité brute et l’atmosphère inquiétante devient encore plus évident sur « Silver Swarm », où l’instrumentation lourde et les mélodies obsédantes évoquent une inspiration claire, et pas nouvelle, de Deftones.

« Only Ever You » marque un changement, avec des guitares qui mènent la danse tandis que la voix de Jacob Charlton prend une place plus importante dans le mix. La structure du morceau est presque plus pop, ouvrant la porte à de nouveaux auditeurs tout en conservant les moments où les guitares sont lourdement distordues. C’est un titre marquant, qui réduit l’agression au profit d’une profondeur émotionnelle. Ce changement d’énergie se traduit par « fall into the wind », un court interlude instrumental qui sert de moment de calme avant que « TONGUES » n’explose de nouveau avec toute sa force. Ce morceau résume toute l’essence de l’album : la tension entre des forces opposées, un son à la fois imposant et vulnérable, qui nous pousse dans sa beauté chaotique.

« nerv » est un air obsédant, équilibrant des mélodies de guitare sinistres et délicates avec un chaos de distorsions, créant une tension qui fait la transition avec le premier single de ce nouveau chapitre : « Obsession ». Même un an après sa sortie, le titre n’a rien perdu de sa superbe, toujours aussi hypnotique et immersif. Puis vient « CRUSH », qui offre le moment le plus inattendu de l’album, un titre électronique au rythme soutenu qui se démarque des autres. « Under the knife » suit brièvement cette ambiance atmosphérique avant de plonger dans un travail de guitare profond et distordu et des voix envolées. Enfin, « For Now » clôt l’album sur une note plus légère, les sons clairs de la guitare offrant un moment de respiration après la tempête.

Bien que BODIES ne suive pas une narration stricte ou une vision cinématographique, chaque morceau est comme un nouveau chapitre dans l’exploration de Thornhill de l’attirance obsessive. La tourmente de l’obsession, du désir et de la toxicité est ancrée dans les riffs et les rythmes, ce qui en fait un album qui ne demande pas seulement à être écouté, mais ressenti. Après les avoir vus en live deux fois l’année dernière (à Paris avec Polaris et à Bruxelles avec Bury Tomorrow), nous savions déjà que nous parlerions d’eux bientôt, BODIES ne fait que confirmer que ce ne sera pas la dernière fois.

This track encapsulates the entire essence of the album: tension between opposing forces, a sound both commanding and vulnerable, pushing us into its chaotic beauty.

« nerv » is an earworm, balancing eerie, delicate guitar melodies with distortion-driven chaos, creating a push-and-pull tension that seamlessly transitions into the first single of this new chapter: « Obsession. » Even a year after its release, the track didn’t lose a thing, still hypnotic and immersive. Then comes « CRUSH, » offering the most unexpected moment of the album, an electronic-driven, steady beat-led track that stands apart from the rest. « under the knife » briefly follows that atmospheric vibe before plunging into deep, distorted guitar work and soaring vocals. Finally, « For Now » closes the album on a lighter, airier note, the clear guitar tones providing a moment of breath after the storm.

While BODIES doesn’t follow a strict narrative or any cinematic view, each track feels like a new chapter in Thornhill’s exploration of dangerous attraction. The turmoil of obsession, desire, and toxicity is embedded within the riffs and rhythms, making for an album that doesn’t just demand to be heard but felt. After catching them live twice last year (in Paris with Polaris and in Brussels with Bury Tomorrow), we already knew we’d be talking about them again soon, BODIES just confirms that it won’t be the last time.
