Sous le ciel sombre de ce dimanche 20 avril, direction le Trix pour une soirée que le line-up promet intense ! Ce soir, le programme n’annonce rien de moins que les Suédois de thrown en tête d’affiche, avec leur metalcore incisif. Leur tournée en Europe et au Royaume-Uni nous permet enfin de savourer en live les morceaux de leur premier album Excessive Guilt. Pour nous présenter tout ça comme il se doit, ils sont accompagnés par trois groupes parfaitement sélectionnés : Crystal Lake, UnityTX et Graphic Nature. On part pour une soirée qui s’annonce déchaînée, remplissant le format Club du Trix avec un magnifique sold-out, c’est d’ailleurs le cas sur la plupart des dates de la tournée !

Arrivant d’Angleterre, le quintet Graphic Nature s’impose depuis 2018 sur la scène metalcore. Ils nous ont livré l’été dernier leur deuxième album Who Are You When No One Is Watching?, qu’ils profitent de présenter au public. On a droit à des titres tels que “Fractured” ou “Locked In”. Mais ils passent tout autant de temps sur l’album précédent A Mind Waiting To Die, notamment en ouvrant leur set avec “Headstone”. Dès le départ, ils semblent être le choix parfait pour ouvrir le bal ce soir. Leur son violent nous projette face à un mur de guitares, dont les riffs sont appuyés par la férocité et la précision de Jack Bowderie derrière la batterie. On leur offrirait bien une scène un peu plus grande à Harvey Freeman et ses compères, afin que leurs déplacements et sauts s’amplifient. Une chose est sûre : leur son metalcore, flirtant parfois avec le cyberpunk grâce à des ajouts électro, n’a pas fait traîner les gens pour ouvrir un pit timide mais intense !
On traverse ensuite l’Atlantique avec UnityTX, venu des États-Unis. Après avoir demandé deux fois l’envoi de la track, le set démarre sur une intro menée par la basse et la guitare, à un rythme lent, lourd, mais puissant. L’influence de groupes tels que Body Count est clairement présente. On se retrouve face à Jay Webster, qui délivre ses paroles avec une précision et une force qu’on ne peut pas manquer, le tout ponctué de “motherfucker” et “pussies”. Encore une fois, le groupe parcourt l’ensemble de sa discographie, depuis leur premier EP Mad Boy sorti en 2019 avec “HAIL MARY” ou encore “CROSS ME”, jusqu’à leur dernier single “HEINOUS.”, sorti au début du mois. Ils n’oublient pas de passer par leur album Ferality, avec “WORLD OF MALICE” qui ouvre leur set, ou encore “DIAMOND DIEZ”, qui permettra à Jay Webster d’ouvrir le pit aux “Ladies” uniquement. UnityTX a très clairement agrandi l’espace du moshpit, mais a aussi permis à la foule de s’ancrer davantage dans le show en reprenant aisément les paroles.
Si la salle ne nous paraissait peut-être pas si pleine avant, ce n’est désormais plus le cas. La foule s’est rapprochée de la scène et trépigne d’impatience de voir les Japonais de Crystal Lake prendre place. La réputation du groupe n’est plus à faire ; présent depuis 2002 sur la scène metalcore, les changements internes n’ont en rien entamé les éloges. On assiste à un changement presque brutal : alors que UnityTX nous proposait un rap puissant sur des accords proches du beatdown, Crystal Lake remet les riffs et envolées de guitares au centre, avec une approche bien plus deathcore que les groupes précédents. Dès le départ, le pit grandit encore un peu. Plus question d’être timide : tout le monde s’y jette. John Robert Centorrino, qui a rejoint le groupe début 2023, s’impose dès les premières secondes de “BlüdGod”, nous balançant toute la puissance de sa voix, alliée à l’énergie des musiciens qui font la réputation de Crystal Lake. C’est ensuite une véritable vague qui se déferle sur nous, presque littéralement, puisque le chanteur tire les gens sur scène pour les faire sauter dans la foule. Aucun membre ne semble tenir en place, que ce soit les guitaristes ou le bassiste ; l’un d’eux s’aventure même sur la foule ! C’est un véritable show que le groupe nous livre, tout en restant sur des titres plutôt récents, puisque leur discographie ne remonte pas plus loin que leur dernier album Helix, sorti en 2019, avec notamment le titre “Apollo” qui clôture leur set en beauté.
Alors qu’on reprend notre souffle, la foule se hâte toujours un peu plus près de la scène. Certains d’entre nous ont déjà pu voir thrown en première partie de While She Sleeps cet automne et on en attend bien plus d’eux maintenant qu’ils sont en tête d’affiche. Depuis leurs débuts en 2021, ils se sont imposés avec un chant/rap agressif posé sur des guitares lourdes et distordues. Le quatuor renvoie une image assez énigmatique, et leur entrée sur le morceau “On My Hip” de GRXGVR ne fait que renforcer cette impression, sans parler du peu de lumière présent sur scène pendant leur set. Le morceau de hip-hop est brutalement interrompu par le riff d’intro de “backfire”, tiré de leur album Excessive Guiltsorti en août dernier. Un démarrage en pleine puissance qui relance instantanément les moshpits, et ceux-ci ne comptent pas s’arrêter. Les morceaux sont courts, mais s’enchaînent facilement, ponctués de quelques mots pour annoncer le titre ou dire qu’ils sont heureux d’être de retour. thrown ne partage pas beaucoup plus, mais on s’en contente : leur musique a une force brute qui représente une belle dose d’adrénaline, un shot nécessaire. Avantage des morceaux courts : presque tout rentre dans la setlist. On a donc l’album Excessive Guilt dans son intégralité, à l’exception d’un seul morceau, avec des moments forts comme “bitter friend”, “on the verge” ou encore “guilt”. Ils en profitent aussi pour jouer presque tous les titres de leur premier EP Extended Pain. Les Suédois nous offrent un set d’une quarantaine de minutes, mais qui nous ravit par son intensité et sa puissance sonore, mettant tout le monde d’accord.
Cette soirée au Trix aura tenu toutes ses promesses : un sold-out explosif, des sets puissants du premier au dernier groupe, et une montée en intensité parfaitement maîtrisée. Entre violence sonore, énergie débordante et communion avec le public, thrown et leurs invités nous ont offert un condensé de ce que le metalcore a de plus percutant à offrir en 2025.

Under the dark skies of this Sunday, April 20th, we head to the Trix for an evening that the line-up promises to be intense! Tonight’s line-up features nothing less than Sweden’s Thrown as headliners, with their incisive metalcore. Their tour of Europe and the U.K. has finally given us the chance to enjoy live tracks from their debut album, Excessive Guilt. They’re accompanied by three perfectly selected bands: Crystal Lake, UnityTX and Graphic Nature. We’re in for what promises to be a wild evening, filling the Club du Trix format with a magnificent sell-out, as is the case on most of the tour dates!

Graphic Nature, a quintet from England, have been making their mark on the metalcore scene since 2018. Last summer, they delivered their second album Who Are You When No One Is Watching? which they are now presenting to the public. We’re treated to tracks like “Fractured” and “Locked In”. But they spend just as much time on previous album A Mind Waiting To Die, opening their set with “Headstone”. From the outset, they seem the perfect choice to open the evening’s proceedings. Their violent sound throws us in front of a wall of guitars, whose riffs are backed by the ferocity and precision of Jack Bowderie behind the drums. We’d love to give Harvey Freeman and his cohorts a slightly bigger stage, so that their moves and jumps can be amplified. One thing’s for sure: their metalcore sound, sometimes flirting with cyberpunk thanks to electro additions, didn’t drag people out to open a shy but intense pit!
We then cross the Atlantic with UnityTX, from the USA. After asking twice for the track to be sent, the set kicks off with a bass- and guitar-driven intro, at a slow, heavy but powerful pace. The influence of bands like Body Count is clearly present. We find ourselves face to face with Jay Webster, who delivers his lyrics with a precision and force that can’t be missed, punctuated by “motherfucker” and “pussies”. Once again, the band run through their entire discography, from their debut EP Mad Boy released in 2019 with “HAIL MARY” or even “CROSS ME”, to their latest single “HEINOUS.”, released earlier this month. They don’t forget to go through their Ferality album, with “WORLD OF MALICE” opening their set, or “DIAMOND DIEZ”, which will allow Jay Webster to open the pit to the “Ladies” only. UnityTX clearly expanded the moshpit space, but also allowed the crowd to anchor themselves more firmly in the show, easily picking up the lyrics.
The venue may not have seemed so full before, but that’s no longer the case. The crowd has moved closer to the stage, and is eagerly anticipating the arrival of Japan’s Crystal Lake. The band’s reputation is well established; they’ve been a fixture on the metalcore scene since 2002, and internal changes have done nothing to dampen their praise. There’s an almost abrupt change: whereas UnityTX offered us powerful rap over beatdown chords, Crystal Lake puts riffs and guitar flights back at the center, with a much more deathcore approach than previous bands. Right from the start, the pit grows even bigger. There’s no need to be shy: everyone jumps in. John Robert Centorrino, who joined the band at the beginning of 2023, makes his presence felt from the very first seconds of “BlüdGod”, throwing all the power of his voice at us, combined with the energy of the musicians for whom Crystal Lake are renowned. It’s then a veritable wave that washes over us, almost literally, as the singer pulls people on stage to make them jump into the crowd. No member of the band seems to hold still, whether guitarist or bassist; one of them even ventures out onto the crowd! It’s a real show that the band delivers, while sticking to rather recent titles, since their discography doesn’t go back further than their latest album Helix, released in 2019, with notably the track “Apollo” closing their set in style.
As we catch our breath, the crowd rushes ever closer to the stage. Some of us have already seen Thrown in support of While She Sleeps this autumn, and we’re expecting a lot more from them now that they’re headlining. Since their debut in 2021, they’ve established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, with their aggressive vocals/rap laid over heavy, distorted guitars. The quartet project a rather enigmatic image, and their entrance on GRXGVR‘s “On My Hip” only reinforces this impression, not to mention the scant lighting present on stage during their set. The hip-hop track is brutally interrupted by the intro riff of “backfire”, taken from their album Excessive Guilt released last August. It’s a full-throttle start that instantly gets the moshpits going, and they don’t intend to stop. The tracks are short, but flow easily, punctuated by a few words to announce the title or say that they’re happy to be back. thrown don’t share much more, but we’re content with that: their music has a raw strength that represents a nice dose of adrenalin, a necessary shot. The advantage of short tracks is that almost everything fits in the setlist. So we have the entire Excessive Guilt album, except for one track, with highlights like “bitter friend”, “on the verge” and “guilt”. They also took the opportunity to play almost all tracks from their debut EP Extended Pain. The Swedish band’s set lasts around forty minutes, but its intensity and sonic power leave everyone in agreement.
This evening at the Trix lived up to all its promises: an explosive sell-out, powerful sets from the first band to the last, and a perfectly controlled build-up of intensity. Between sonic violence, overflowing energy and communion with the audience, Thrown and their guests offered us a compendium of the best metalcore has to offer in 2025.
