La Bulle Café accueille ce soir une belle soirée autour du fuzz rock français organisée par Roaring Tubes. Au programme les toulousains de Fuzzy Grass et les nantais désormais basés à Paris de Decasia, deux groupes qui peuplent nos playlists depuis de nombreux mois et qu’on avait hâte de voir ou revoir en live! C’est donc avec une grande joie que Sounding Shivers s’est retrouvé partenaire de cette soirée qui s’annonçait excellente pour ce 1er mai!

Le 1er mai à Lille est synonyme de transports en communs à l’arrêt et de Fête de la Soupe, c’est donc un public venu directement en vélo ou depuis la fiesta de l’après midi qui se retrouve à La Bulle Café pour le set de Decasia qui ouvrent cette soirée. Avec le souvenir vif de leur concert à Issy-Les- Moulineaux en janvier 2024 encore bien en tête nous étions ravis de retrouver le groupe parisiano-nantais à la maison! D’entrée le duo rythmique mené par Fabien Proust à la basse et Geoffrey Riberry à la batterie nous en met plein la vue. Leur heavy psych rock est une véritable bombe d’énergie brute qui prend seulement quelques secondes à captiver le public lillois qui n’hésite pas à la faire savoir entre chaque titre. « Monarch » laisse à Maxime Richard l’occasion de nous montrer tout son talent de guitariste. Tout au long du set, une cymbale récalcitrante ne cessera de se faire la malle mais pas de soucis, Geoffroy continue de jouer quoi qu’il arrive quand beaucoup d’autre auraient été décontenancés par ce soucis technique. Le groupe nous proposera également de l’inédit dans ce set, et autant vous dire qu’on attend leur nouvelle sortie de pied ferme après avoir entendu ces nouvelles compositions du trio. L’énergie rock qui se dégage du set de Decasia met tout le monde d’accord et nous fait remuer la tête sans discontinuer. Le public n’hésitera pas à répondre à l’appel du groupe pour avoir des bières sur scène, ce qui renforce un peu plus l’ambiance de camaraderie qui flotte ce soir à la Bulle, surtout quand on entend les exclamations de joie entre chaque titre, signe que la soirée se passe excellement bien. Après « Ilion » qui subjugue une fois de plus toute l’audience présente ce soir, le groupe se lance déjà dans son dernier titre « Skeleton ». Mais c’est mal les connaître de penser qu’ils nous laisserons avec juste une interprétation du morceau. Ils termineront sur une jam qui laisse voir une fois de plus la complicité très forte qui règne entre ces trois excellents musiciens. Cela faisait donc quasi un an et demi qu’on avait pas vu Decasia sur scène et on peut vous dire que la prestation était largement à la hauteur de nos souvenirs. On vous encourage vivement à aller les découvrir et de notre côté, on attend avec impatience leur prochaine sortie studio et évidemment leur retour dans le coin!
Il est temps pour Fuzzy Grass de monter sur la scène et dès le début du set, on sent que le groupe veut marquer les esprits. Audric Faucheux commence le set en chantant dans ce qui s’avère être un synthétiseur vocal, de forme assez étrange. Ses vocalises sont accompagnées des riffs fuzzy à souhait de Laura Luiz qu’on est ravis de retrouver sur scène après des concerts mémorables vécus quand elle jouait avec Red Cloud. Le groupe met évidemment en avant son album The Revenge Of The Blue Nut sorti l’an dernier mais sans oublier les morceaux plus anciens. La communion entre les musiciens est évidente et le set met tout le public d’accord en quelques instants. Thomas Hobeck (basse) et Clément Gaudry-Santiago (batterie) forment un duo magistral qui renforce l’immersion déjà forte dans les aventures de l’homme cacahuète, personnage principal de leur dernière sortie. Chaque titre nous plonge un peu plus dans les influences très 70’s du groupe, avec en particulier les claviers parfaitement mis en valeur par le jeu de Audric. La fête aux instruments étranges continue puisque sur plusieurs titres ce soir Audric mettra en avant une shruti box, instrument traditionnel indien entre un accordéon et un harmonium au niveau du son. Laura continue de nous émerveiller avec son jeu de guitare toujours inventif pendant que les rythmiques nous font remuer la tête à l’envie. Le set est parfait de bout en bout et met en valeur la qualité de jeu de chaque musicien. Là encore l’ambiance est excellente dans la salle tant tout le monde est émerveillé par le niveau de jeu des groupes. Après un dernier titre endiablé le groupe nous en propose un supplémentaire à la demande générale avant de nous annoncer une surprise à venir. Et quelle surprise! Decasia rejoignent la scène pour un titre en commun. La scène est petite mais les musiciens donnent tout pour émerveiller nos oreilles une fois de plus! On verra même les deux batteurs échanger de place entre batterie et tambourin en milieu de morceau sans effort. Là encore quel bonheur d’entendre de la musique de ce niveau jouée avec un aussi grand bonheur par deux groupes clairement amis. Le morceau se termine mais Laura Luiz et Maxime Richard ne l’entendent pas de cette oreille et continuent en jam accompagnés par un mix des musiciens des deux groupes pendant que les autres rejoignent le merch. Une fin de concert en apothéose qui nous conforte dans l’idée que les deux formations mènent le rock français toujours plus haut ce soir.
On ne pouvait rêver plus beau 1er mai que celui que nous avons vécu en compagnie de Decasia et Fuzzy Grass. Ceux qui étaient présents ce soir vous diront que vous avez manquer une soirée de haute volée, et on partage largement cet avis! On terminera en citant nos amis présents ce soir en disant « Youpi le Rock, Youpi La Musique! » car effectivement le rock n’a jamais été aussi vivant que ce soir à la Bulle.

Tonight, La Bulle Café is hosting a great evening of French fuzz rock organised by Roaring Tubes. On the bill are Fuzzy Grass from Toulouse and Decasia from Nantes, now based in Paris, two bands who’ve been on our playlists for months and who we can’t wait to see live! So Sounding Shivers was delighted to be a partner on what promised to be an excellent May 1st evening!
May 1st in Lille is synonymous with public transport at a standstill and the Fête de la Soupe, so it’s a crowd that’s come straight by bike or from the afternoon fiesta that finds itself at La Bulle Café for Decasia‘s set to open the evening. With the vivid memory of their concert in Issy-Les-Moulineaux in January 2024 still fresh in our minds, we were delighted to welcome the Parisian-Nantes-based group back to the house! From the outset, the rhythmic duo led by Fabien Proust on bass and Geoffrey Riberry on drums were a sight to behold. Their heavy psych rock is a veritable bomb of raw energy that takes just a few seconds to captivate the Lille audience, who don’t hesitate to let it be known between each track. « Monarch » gives Maxime Richard a chance to show off his guitar-playing talent. Throughout the set a recalcitrant cymbal kept getting in the way, but no worries, Geoffroy kept on playing no matter what, when many others would have been disconcerted by this technical problem. The band will also be offering us some new material in this set, and it’s fair to say that we’re eagerly awaiting their new release after hearing these new compositions by the trio. The rock energy that emanates from Decasia’s set gets everyone on the same wavelength and keeps our heads bobbing non-stop. The audience were quick to respond to the band’s call for beers on stage, adding to the atmosphere of camaraderie that pervaded the Bulle this evening, especially when you heard the exclamations of joy between each track, a sign that the evening was going extremely well. After “Ilion”, which once again captivated the entire audience, the band launched into their final track, “Skeleton”. But you wouldn’t know them well if you thought they were going to leave us with just a rendition of the song. They finish with a jam that once again shows the strong bond between these three excellent musicians. So it’s been almost a year and a half since we’ve seen Decasia live on stage, and we can tell you that the performance lived up to all our memories. We urge you to check them out, and for our part we can’t wait for their next studio release and, of course, their return to our neck of the woods!
It’s time for Fuzzy Grass to take to the stage, and right from the start of their set you can tell the band want to make their mark. Audric Faucheux kicks off the set by singing into what turns out to be a strangely shaped vocal synthesiser. His vocals are accompanied by the fuzzy riffs of Laura Luiz, who is delighted to be back on stage after her memorable concerts with Red Cloud. The band obviously showcased their album The Revenge Of The Blue Nut, released last year, without forgetting the older tracks. The communion between the musicians is obvious and the set has the whole audience on the same wavelength in a matter of moments. Thomas Hobeck (bass) and Clément Gaudry-Santiago (drums) form a masterful duo that reinforces the already strong immersion in the adventures of Peanut Man, the main character of their latest release. Each track plunges us a little deeper into the band’s very 70s influences, with Audric‘s keyboard playing in particular bringing out the best in them. The feast of strange instruments continues, with Audric featuring a shruti box (a traditional Indian instrument somewhere between an accordion and a harmonium in terms of sound) on several tracks this evening. Laura continues to amaze us with her ever-inventive guitar playing, while the rhythms keep our heads bobbing. The set was perfect from start to finish, showcasing the quality of each musician’s playing. Once again, the atmosphere in the room was excellent, with everyone marvelling at the level of the bands’ playing. After a frenzied final track, the band played one more by popular demand before announcing a surprise to come. And what a surprise it was! Decasia join them on stage for a joint track. The stage is small but the musicians give it their all to amaze our ears once again! We even saw the two drummers effortlessly swap places between drums and tambourine in the middle of the track. Once again, what a pleasure to hear music of this level played with such great joy by two groups who are clearly friends. The song comes to an end, but Laura Luiz and Maxime Richard are having none of it and continue jamming, accompanied by a mix of musicians from the two groups, while the others join in the merch. It was a climactic end to the concert, reinforcing the idea that these two bands are taking French rock to new heights this evening.
We couldn’t have dreamt of a better May 1st than the one we enjoyed with Decasia and Fuzzy Grass. Those of you who were there tonight will tell you that you missed out on a top-notch evening, and we largely share that opinion! We’ll end by quoting our friends who were there tonight, saying ‘Yippee Rock, Yippee Music!’ because rock has never been as alive as it was tonight at La Bulle.
