Quatre ans après la sortie de l’excellent Noktvrn, ce mois de septembre marque l’arrivée du nouvel album des allemands de Der Weg Einer Freiheit. Intitulé Innern, il sera disponible via Season Of Mist le 12 septembre prochain. Son titre nous incite à laisser l’extérieur et à nous plonger dans notre fort intérieur. Nous voilà impatients de plonger dans l’écoute de ces six nouveaux titres que l’on sait déjà emplis d’émotions fortes à l’écoute des singles déjà disponibles.

Depuis de nombreuses années, Der Weg Einer Freiheit nous proposent des titres longs et évolutifs qui viennent interroger en permanence l’étiquette black métal qui leur est collée tant leur son regorge d’influences multiples. « Marter », le morceau d’ouverture le confirme d’entrée avec un son taillé pour nous faire passer par un ensemble d’émotions toutes plus fortes les unes que les autres. Les guitares de Nicolas Rausch et de Nikita Kamprad viennent avec des riffs ciselés vous coller des frissons d’entrée de jeu, pendant que les rythmiques dantesques de Alan Noruspur à la basse et Tobias Schuler à la batterie nous renvoient avec force aux racines musicales de la formation. Ces presque dix minutes de musique nous laissent apprécier à quel point le groupe a travaillé son identité sonore, une fois de plus, pour cette nouvelle sortie. La voix de Nikita Kamprad vient nous émouvoir au plus haut point sur « Xibalba » avec un chant habité qui montre toute l’étendue du talent du musicien et chanteur. Sur ce titre, le groupe apporte encore de nouvelles variations sonores venant apporter de nouvelles textures à un son déjà diablement travaillé et captivant. Ce titre puissant évoque la machine de peur médiatique actuelle en nous invitant à retrouver un chemin plus introspectif et plus clair que ce torrent continu d’informations qui nous assaille.

Le single « Eos » nous avait envouté dès sa sortie avec son identité très naturaliste portée par des musiciens au sommet de leur art. « Fragment » le confirme une fois de plus avec des prestations à tomber, où le chant clair de Nikita vient nous étonner tout en gardant cette capacité à nous coller des frissons en quelques instants. Ce titre illustre parfaitement cette identité sonore évoquée plus haut, évidemment le black métal est présent mais toute la première partie du titre vient nous plonger dans notre amour du post métal sans effort dans une déferlante sonore tout aussi maîtrisée. Après l’interlude « Finisterre III », le groupe nous offre « Forlorn » pour clôturer l’album en beauté. Ce titre chanté en anglais, contrairement au reste de l’album chanté dans la langue de Goethe, nous vois retrouver après une longue intro planante la voix claire de Nikita et des riffs définitivement loin du black métal, avant que en milieu de titre les blasts ne soient de retour mais avec toujours ce chant presque lointain. Puis le chant hurlé reprend ses droits avec toujours cette force émotionnelle assez incroyable. Puis la douceur est de retour pour une fin en apothéose.

Avec Innern, Der Weg Einer Freiheit nous montrent à quel point leur travail des compositions offre des titres tous plus marquants les uns que les autres. Le voyage sonore et mental offert par cet album est décidément très prenant, mais nous donne une véritable envie d’y replonger encore et encore pour y trouver de nouvelles choses à chaque écoute. Une vraie pépite de la rentrée qui cimente le groupe allemand dans nos groupes immanquables, tant ils savent faire évoluer leur musique pour toujours plus de frissons.

Entitled Innern, it will be available via Season Of Mist on September 12th. Its title encourages us to leave the outside world behind and delve into our inner selves. We can’t wait to dive into these six new tracks, which we already know are full of powerful emotions from listening to the singles already available.

For many years now, Der Weg Einer Freiheit have been offering us long, evolving tracks that constantly challenge the black metal label attached to them, as their sound is brimming with multiple influences. ‘Marter’, the opening track, confirms this right from the start with a sound designed to take us through a range of emotions, each one stronger than the last. The guitars of Nicolas Rausch and Nikita Kamprad deliver finely crafted riffs that send shivers down your spine from the outset, while the Dantean rhythms of Alan Noruspur on bass and Tobias Schuler on drums forcefully remind us of the band’s musical roots. These almost ten minutes of music allow us to appreciate how much the band has worked on its sound identity, once again, for this new release. Nikita Kamprad‘s voice moves us to the highest degree on ‘Xibalba’ with a haunting vocal performance that shows the full extent of the musician and singer’s talent. On this track, the band introduces new sound variations that add new textures to an already devilishly crafted and captivating sound. This powerful track evokes the current media fear machine, inviting us to find a more introspective and clearer path than the constant torrent of information that assails us.

The single ‘Eos’ captivated us from the moment it was released, with its naturalistic identity carried by musicians at the peak of their art. ‘Fragment’ confirms this once again with performances to die for, where Nikita‘s clear vocals surprise us while retaining the ability to give us chills in an instant. This track perfectly illustrates the sound identity mentioned above. Obviously, black metal is present, but the entire first part of the track effortlessly immerses us in our love of post-metal in an equally masterful wave of sound. After the interlude ‘Finisterre III’, the band offers us ‘Forlorn’ to close the album in style. This track, sung in English, unlike the rest of the album sung in the language of Goethe, sees us return after a long, dreamy intro to Nikita‘s clear voice and riffs that are definitely far from black metal, before the blasts return in the middle of the track, but still with that almost distant singing. Then the screaming vocals take over again with the same incredible emotional force. Then the softness returns for a grand finale.

With Innern, Der Weg Einer Freiheit show us how their compositional work offers tracks that are each more striking than the last. The sonic and mental journey offered by this album is decidedly captivating, making us want to dive back in again and again to discover new things with each listen. A real gem of the new season, cementing the German band’s place among our must-see acts, as they know how to evolve their music to deliver ever more thrills.
