Ce 17 septembre, c’est à De Kreun, à Courtrai que nous avions rendez-vous pour y retrouver les américains de Agriculture, qui nous en avaient mis plein la vue à Paris en avril dernier. Le groupe était accompagné de Machukha que l’on a découvert ce soir là, pour une belle soirée black métal !

La salle De Kreun, située dans un grand complexe artistique et liée au Wilde Westen, nous a accueilli avec sa scène large laissant beaucoup de place aux musicen.ne.s pour nous offrir le spectacle le plus captivant. Et autant vous dire que Machukha se sont servi de cet espace avec brio. Le groupe venu basé en Allemagne nous plongea en quelques instants dans un post black métal envoutant où riffs et rythmiques ciselées viennent vous emporter dès les premiers instants. On sentit dès la longue plage instrumentale qui ouvrit le show que ce concert va nous laisser sans voix. Les riffs de Ihsah et Blathin sont taillés pour vous filler des frissons. Recroquevillée sur scène Nataliia, semblait laisser la musique l’habiter, puis se lança dans un chant où ses cris sont semblables à des appels à l’aide dans un monde tourmenté. Le tout était sublimé par les rythmiques servies par Mykola à la basse et Pedra à la batterie, tous deux au sommet de leur art. Les morceaux chantés en ukrainien sont venu nous toucher au cœur et nous dévoiler tout le talent de la formation. On s’est pris ce show émouvant à souhait en pleine face et il est tout simplement impossible de décrocher de cette prestation unique. Le groupe nous dévoila les morceaux de son album Mochari, sorti un peu plus tôt cette année, et autant vous dire que l’envie de l’écouter dès notre retour est grande! Sur certains titres Mykola troqua sa basse pour un saxophone qui vient ajouter des sonorités assez inédites dans ce genre musical. L’ensemble est captivant et la prestation habitée de Nataliia renforca l’immersion déjà forte offerte par la musique. Nous n’avons pas vu le temps passer et lorsque les derniers riffs viennent à nos oreilles on ne peut qu’applaudir longuement la formation pour ce spectacle total. On ne peut que vous encourager à aller les découvrir, et de notre côté on suivra avec attention leurs prochaines annonces de live! C’est donc un véritable coup de cœur pour Machukha pour débuter cette soirée.
Après un changement de plateau relativement rapide c’est au tour d’Agriculture de monter sur scène. Le groupe arriva sur scène au son d’un titre de Bob Dylan, « Brownsville Girl ». Ce morceau nous est d’ailleurs présenté avec enthousiasme par Dan Meyer qui le présente comme une des 50 meilleures chansons du chanteur américain. Après ce début de concert qui montre déjà que le groupe aime le contact avec le public, nous voilà partis pour une belle dose d’ extatic black metal. Le groupe commenca avec un inédit tiré de The Spiritual Sound, leur nouvel album à venir le 3 octobre prochain, et autant vous dire que le quatuor nous emporta dès les premiers instants avec une prestation de haute volée. Dan Meyer alterna aisément entre un chant hurlé surpuissant et un chant clair doux le tout en lançant des riffs magistraux en compagnie de Richard Chowenhill. Le groupe enchaina avec deux autres nouveaux titres, eux déjà bien connus du public puisque déjà disponibles à l’écoute, à savoir « The Weight » et « Bodhidharma ». Un dernier inédit pris la suite avec deux membres du groupe jouant avec des archers pour des sonorités toujours plus envoutantes. Leah B. Levinson excella aussi bien à la basse qu’au chant! Son chant hurlé offre de nombreuses nuances et vient, lui aussi, nous coller des frissons. Enfin le jeu versatile de Kern Haug à la batterie vient nous faire remuer la tête à l’envie. Le duo vocal formé par Leah et Dan était magistral et s’illustra pleinement sur des titres comme « Relier ». Le groupe alterna morceaux longs et titres plus courts, mais non moins très travaillés ou chaque musicien.ne a sa place pour montrer tout son talent. Le concert fila à une vitesse folle et on sent que le public de De Kreun en redemande vu à quel point les applaudissements ne cessent d’augmenter en intensité. Après une petite heure, le groupe clôtura son concert sur le superbe « Living Is Easy » qui vient nous donner une dernière dose d’un black métal maîtrisé et absolument magistral servi par la formation californienne. On quitta la salle comblés et impatient de découvrir la nouvelle sortie du groupe, et on espère les voir débarquer à Lille au plus vite!

On September 17th, we had a date at De Kreun in Kortrijk to see the American band Agriculture, who had blown us away in Paris last April. The band was accompanied by Machukha, whom we discovered that evening, for a great night of black metal!

The De Kreun venue, located in a large arts complex linked to Wilde Westen, welcomes us with its large stage, leaving plenty of room for the musicians to give us the most captivating show. And suffice to say that Machukha make brilliant use of this space. The band based in Germany, plunges us into a spellbinding post-black metal sound where chiselled riffs and rhythms sweep you away from the very first notes. From the long instrumental piece that opens the show, we sense that this concert is going to leave us speechless. Ihsah and Blathin‘s riffs are designed to give you chills. Curled up on stage, Nataliia seems to let the music inhabit her, then launches into a song where her cries are like calls for help in a tormented world. The whole thing is enhanced by the rhythms provided by Mykola on bass and Pedra on drums, both at the top of their game. The songs sung in Ukrainian touch the heart and reveal the band’s talent. This deeply moving show hits you right between the eyes, and it’s simply impossible to tear yourself away from this unique performance. The band unveils tracks from their album Mochari, released earlier this year, and suffice to say that we can’t wait to listen to it as soon as we get home! On some tracks, Mykola swaps his bass for a trumpet, adding some rather unusual sounds to this musical genre. The whole thing is captivating, and Nataliia‘s passionate performance reinforces the already powerful immersion offered by the music. Time flies by, and when the last riffs reach our ears, we can only applaud the band at length for this spectacular show. We can only encourage you to go and discover them, and for our part, we will be keeping a close eye on their upcoming live announcements! Machukha is a real favourite to start the evening.
After a relatively quick changeover, it’s Agriculture‘s turn to take to the stage. The band arrives on stage to the sound of Bob Dylan’s ‘Brownsville Girl’. Dan Meyer enthusiastically introduces the song, describing it as one of the American singer’s 50 best songs. After this start to the concert, which already shows that the band loves interacting with the audience, we’re off for a good dose of ecstatic black metal. The band starts with a new track from The Spiritual Sound, their new album due out on October 3rd, and suffice to say that the quartet sweeps us away from the very first moments with a high-flying performance. Dan Meyer alternates effortlessly between powerful screams and soft clean vocals, all while delivering masterful riffs alongside Richard Chowenhill. The band follows up with two other new tracks, already well known to the audience as they are available to listen to online, namely ‘The Weight’ and ‘Bodhidharma’. A final unreleased track follows, with two members of the band playing with bows for even more captivating sounds. Leah B. Levinson excels on both bass and vocals! Her screamed vocals offer many nuances and also send shivers down our spines. Finally, Kern Haug‘s versatile drumming makes us want to bang our heads. The vocal duo formed by Leah and Dan is masterful and really shines on tracks like ‘Relier’. The band alternates between long and shorter tracks, but each is equally well crafted, with every musician given the opportunity to showcase their talent. The concert flies by at breakneck speed, and you can tell that the audience at De Kreun is hungry for more, given the ever-increasing intensity of the applause. After an hour, the band closes their concert with the superb ‘Living Is Easy’, giving us one last dose of masterful black metal from the Californian band. We leave the venue feeling satisfied and eager to discover the band’s new release, and we hope to see them in Lille as soon as possible!
