Après un premier single en 2024, le groupe de métal progressif finlandais Royal Sorrow nous propose en cette fin septembre de découvrir son tout premier album studio. Intitulé Innerdeeps, il est disponible dès le 26 septembre via InsideOut Music. Les premiers titres dévoilés nous ont enthousiasmé, nous voilà donc prêt à plonger avec hâte dans l’univers de cette jeune formation.

L’album s’ouvre sur « Let Go » qui laisse l’atmosphère se poser avant une explosion sonore et l’arrivée de la voix de Markus Hentunen, également guitariste de la formation. On sent l’envie d’entrée de jeu de proposer un son moderne, qui n’est pas sans nous rappeler Vola en particulier en ce qui concerne les harmonies vocales. Le chanteur excelle aussi bien dans les riffs percutants que vocalement et nous voilà déjà emportés dans un univers sonore qui nous emporte. L’intro du titre suivant et la rythmique en arrière plan semble tout droit sortie de l’album de Igorrr, mais on revient vite au prog métal avec des refrains restant en tête dès la première écoute. L’évolution sonore est bien présente portée par le travail rythmique de Eero Maijala à la basse et Janne Mieskonen à la batterie. Le single ultra efficace « Samsara » confirme que le groupe a voulu faire de ce premier album une écoute indispensable de ce début d’automne. On retrouve l’influence de groupes comme Vola dans le titre « Release Your Shadow », mais le trio garde une identité forte avec un son clairement taillé pour la scène. Royal Sorrow n’hésitent pas à ajouter des sons de claviers à des titres comme « Evergreen » pour une immersion plus grande, sons qui nous font espérer la présence d’un musicien supplémentaire pour les concerts, ou qui rejoindrait le groupe dans le futur. La puissance vocale de Markus nous bluffe tout au long du disque avec même quelques incursions de chant saturé très réussies.  « Survival Complex » montre lui à fond le côté métal moderne du trio, avec des signatures rythmiques très marquées dans le djent, pour notre plus grand plaisir. Les moments plus doux comme la seconde partie de « Bloodflower » viennent contraster avec l’énergie brute d’un titre comme « Give In ». Depuis le début de ce disque chaque titre nous marque un peu plus que le précédent, et il en sera de même pour le morceau titre. Avec encore une fois des rythmiques prog à souhait, des harmonies magistrales et des riffs à tomber on se délecte vraiment de ce disque jusqu’à la dernière seconde.

Avec Innerdeeps, Royal Sorrow frappent très fort et montrent dès leur première sortie qu’ils sont une formation sur laquelle il faudra compter dans le futur. Autant dans la composition que dans l’interprétation le groupe impressionne par sa maturité. Les morceaux restent en tête et l’album fait clairement partie de ceux qu’on a envie de se repasser en boucle. On suivra clairement leur travail avec attention! 

Autant vous dire qu’on a hâte de voir le groupe en live sur la future tournée européenne de Leprous qui s’arrêtera à Rennes le 29 octobre, à Bordeaux le 30, à Perpignan le 31, à Montpellier le 6 novembre, Anvers (Belgique) le 20 novembre et à Bethune le 23 novembre prochain.

After releasing their first single in 2024, Finnish progressive metal band Royal Sorrow are set to release their debut studio album at the end of September. Entitled Innerdeeps, it will be available from 26 September via InsideOut Music. We loved the first tracks we heard, so we can’t wait to dive into the world of this young band.

The album opens with ‘Let Go’, which allows the atmosphere to settle before an explosion of sound and the arrival of Markus Hentunen‘s voice, who is also the band’s guitarist. Right from the start, you can sense the desire to offer a modern sound, which is reminiscent of Vola, particularly in terms of the vocal harmonies. The singer excels both in the powerful riffs and vocally, and we are immediately swept away into a captivating soundscape. The intro to the next track and the rhythm in the background seem straight out of Igorrr‘s album, but we quickly return to prog metal with choruses that stick in your head from the first listen. The sonic evolution is clearly present, carried by the rhythmic work of Eero Maijala on bass and Janne Mieskonen on drums. The ultra-effective single ‘Samsara’ confirms that the band wanted to make this debut album an essential listen for the beginning of autumn. The influence of bands such as Vola can be heard in the track ‘Release Your Shadow’, but the trio retains a strong identity with a sound clearly tailored for the stage. Royal Sorrow doesn’t hesitate to add keyboard sounds to tracks such as ‘Evergreen’ for greater immersion, sounds that make us hope for the presence of an additional musician for concerts, or who might join the band in the future. Markus’ vocal power impresses us throughout the album, with even a few very successful forays into saturated singing. ‘Survival Complex’ fully showcases the trio’s modern metal side, with very pronounced djent rhythms, much to our delight. Softer moments, such as the second part of “Bloodflower”, contrast with the raw energy of a track like ‘Give In’. From the beginning of this album, each track leaves a slightly stronger impression than the previous one, and the same is true of the title track. With once again prog rhythms galore, masterful harmonies and killer riffs, we truly revel in this album until the very last second.

With Innerdeeps, Royal Sorrow have made a strong impact and shown from their very first release that they are a band to be reckoned with in the future. Both in terms of composition and performance, the band impresses with its maturity. The tracks stick in your head and the album is clearly one of those you want to play over and over again. We will definitely be following their work closely!
