Ce mardi 4 novembre, nous avons pris la direction du Splendid pour lancer une tournée qui nous semble immanquable : Rise Of The Northstar. Le groupe parisien s’apprête à sortir son nouvel album dans la semaine, alors quoi de mieux que de les retrouver en live pour fêter cela ? Pour cette tournée, ils sont bien accompagnés : venus du Québec, Get The Shot conquiert le public par sa puissance, et les Allemands de Half Me échauffent la salle dès 19 h ! Une soirée qui nous fera voyager, c’est certain (surtout dans les pogos).

Découvrir Half Me sur cette tournée était un plaisir. N’ayant pas encore eu l’occasion de les voir, on ne pouvait qu’attendre impatiemment de les avoir devant nous. Lorsque la lumière se tamise, la salle est encore un peu vide, mais le centre se dessine déjà comme un pit pour les premiers courageux qui s’y engouffrent. Pas de mise en bouche en douceur : le groupe fonce directement dans le vif du sujet, un coup de tom résonne comme un coup de feu dans l’air avant de partir en toute puissance. À la fin du premier titre, le chanteur fait une courte pause pour demander comment on va, la réponse est claire, le public est prêt pour la soirée, même en ce début de semaine. Lors du deuxième morceau, quand le breakdown frappe, on entend les “oow” de satisfaction du public. Pour le troisième titre, le chanteur lance un “I need more moshpits” avant de repartir de plus belle dans leur musique aux riffs lourds et puissants.
Malheureusement, la petite foule reste encore timide et le centre bien vide. Après une courte pause, le chanteur remercie le public pour cet “insane tour” avant de lancer un titre où sa voix prend toute la place sur le premier couplet avant que les musiciens ne se joignent à lui. Le groupe en profite aussi pour nous jouer une toute nouvelle chanson.
Même si le pit reste clairsemé, quelques personnes s’y aventurent, armées de high kicks et de moulinettes. L’énergie du groupe est palpable, et ils nous offrent tout ce dont on a besoin pour lancer cette soirée ; seul regret : on entend parfois difficilement la voix claire du chanteur. Des titres comme « Wraith » ou « Fatalist » sont des immanquables de la discographie de Half Me, et on est ravi de les découvrir en version live.
La foule commence à s’amasser. Comparé à Half Me, qui avait encore un peu de place sur scène, Get The Shot se retrouve à l’étroit sur le petit avant-scène du Splendid, tellement à l’étroit qu’on ne remarque le troisième guitariste sur la gauche que bien plus tard. Leur set s’ouvre sur une mélodie électro accompagnée d’un rythme de batterie (malheureusement pas en live). Puis Get The Shot nous balance son mur de riffs et de sons lourds en pleine tête, faisant paraître Half Me comme un simple échauffement. Le pit aussi s’est bien rempli : il faut dire que le groupe a déjà sa réputation et son public à Lille, bien que l’ancien chanteur Jean-Philippe ne soit plus avec eux. Cette fois, le groupe n’a pas besoin de demander qu’un circle pit soit lancé : la foule s’exécute d’elle-même au son des riffs lourds et puissants. C’est aussi l’occasion pour le groupe de mettre en avant ses guitaristes avec quelques solos permettant de reprendre son souffle avant que la suite ne s’enchaîne sans réelle pause.
Le groupe a récemment présenté son nouveau chanteur, Matthieu Dhani, avec un nouveau single : « Torture Your Corpse ». Lors de son annonce, la foule semble déjà bien le connaître et plus qu’enjouée à l’idée de le découvrir en live. Nous avions pu apprécier le passage du groupe en novembre dernier au Black Lab avec encore Jean-Philippe au chant, la salle s’était retrouvée sans dessus dessous, avec des passages dans le public, tandis qu’ici l’ambiance reste un peu plus soft.
On remarque que lorsque le bassiste prend la parole, c’est pour se rapprocher du public et rappeler un message important : fuck le nazisme, fuck le fascisme, et fuck la toxicité. Le groupe québécois ne manque pas de lancer des wall of death et des circle pits, tandis que quelques crowdsurfers profitent de la foule rassemblée devant la scène. La performance de Matthieu Dhani reste à la hauteur : il ne déçoit pas et prouve que Get The Shot est prêt pour une nouvelle ère. Le public hardcore du Nord leur étant fidèle, on ne devrait pas trop attendre avant de les revoir par ici !
Une pause s’installe dans la soirée pour l’installation de la scénographie de Rise Of The Northstar. Nous nous retrouvons soudainement plongés dans une impasse japonaise. Du pylône électrique au distributeur de boissons, en passant par le cerisier emblématique aux feuilles roses, tout est millimétré pour que le groupe nous plonge dans son univers entre manga et metal. Lorsque les lumières faiblissent, un son hip-hop introduit leur entrée sur scène.
Pas besoin d’introduction pour Rise Of The Northstar : le groupe avait fait salle comble il y a un an dans ce même lieu, et une fois encore, le public est au rendez-vous, sifflant et célébrant leur arrivée avant le lancement en puissance de « Neo Paris ». Ils s’apprêtent à sortir un tout nouvel album le 14 novembre, mais pas de surprise ce soir : aucun inédit, simplement une succession de bangers couvrant l’ensemble de leur discographie, avec « Showdown » de Showdown (2023), puis « Welcame » de Welcame (2014), sur lequel un circle pit est lancé dès les premières notes.
Il s’agit ce soir de la première date de la tournée, quoi de plus logique pour Rise Of The Northstar que de commencer dans le Nord ? Et le public leur a fait honneur. L’enchaînement de « Here Comes the Boom » et « One Love » déclenche encore plus de mouvement dans la foule, qui reprend en chœur les paroles de ces titres iconiques. En entamant un nouveau morceau, le groupe s’interrompt brusquement à la sonnerie d’un téléphone posé sur scène : on entend alors la voix grave symbolisant le démon dans The Legacy Of Shi dire “I’m back” avec un rire diabolique. Le groupe enchaîne alors avec « Raijin » et « Kozo ». Le son de Rise Of The Northstar se fond parfaitement dans la salle, mélangeant l’énergie du metal avec des passages plus rappés qui ne perdent rien en puissance. Bien rodé après toutes ces années, le groupe n’en oublie pas de s’amuser avec le public. Le guitariste profite d’un moment pour jouer quelques mélodies reprises par la foule avant de lancer le riff de « Back 2 Basics », sorti cet été en featuring avec Flo de LANDMVRKS : deux univers qui se mélangent parfaitement. La découverte de ce titre en live ne demande que la présence de Flo pour compléter l’énergie.
À partir de ce moment, le groupe enchaîne sur ses derniers singles qui ont préparé la sortie de l’album, le backdrop tombe révélant ainsi la nouvelle toile : la cover du disque à venir. Après « A.I.R. Max », le groupe enchaîne avec « Rise » pour un retour aux sources émouvant : des feuilles de cerisier tombent du haut de la scène, rendant le moment encore plus immersif.
Pour le rappel, un changement de tenue s’impose : retour aux sources, pour de vrai, avec les tenues du début de ROTNS. Vithia en profite pour prendre la parole, précisant qu’ils se fichent de la mode : s’écouter et s’affirmer selon nos goûts est le seul moyen de se distinguer et de devenir unique. Puis vient « What The Fuck », avant de remonter encore plus tôt dans leur discographie avec « Demonstrating My Saiya Style », tiré de leur premier EP. Pour conclure, le chanteur demande si « Again and Again » nous dit quelque chose : le public acclame, les riffs démarrent, et c’est parti pour le dernier titre, le dernier moment de déchaînement de la soirée.
En quittant la salle, difficile de ne pas sentir l’énergie encore vibrer dans l’air. Trois groupes, trois approches du metal, mais une seule certitude : tout le monde s’est bien dépensé. Et si cette première date annonce le ton de la tournée, alors celle-ci s’annonce explosive.

On Tuesday 4th November, we headed to the Splendid to kick off a tour that we think is unmissable: Rise Of The Northstar. The Parisian band is set to release their new album this week, so what better way to celebrate than to see them live? They are in good company on this tour: Get The Shot from Quebec wins over the audience with their powerful sound, and Half Me from Germany warms up the crowd at 7 p.m.! It’s sure to be an evening that will take us on a journey (especially in the mosh pits).

Discovering Half Me on this tour was a pleasure. Not having had the opportunity to see them yet, we could only wait impatiently to have them in front of us. When the lights dim, the room is still a little empty, but the centre is already taking shape as a pit for the first brave souls who rush in. There was no gentle introduction: the band got straight to the point, a tom drum resounding like a gunshot in the air before launching into full power. At the end of the first song, the singer paused briefly to ask how we were doing, and the answer was clear: the audience was ready for the evening, even at the start of the week. During the second song, when the breakdown hits, you can hear the audience’s satisfied ‘oohs’. For the third song, the singer shouts ‘I need more mosh pits’ before launching back into their heavy and powerful riffs.
Unfortunately, the small crowd is still shy and the centre is empty. After a short break, the singer thanks the audience for this ‘insane tour’ before launching into a song where his voice takes centre stage on the first verse before the musicians join in. The band also takes the opportunity to play us a brand new song.
Even though the pit remains sparse, a few people venture in, armed with high kicks and windmills. The band’s energy is palpable, and they give us everything we need to kick off the evening; the only regret is that the singer’s clear voice is sometimes difficult to hear. Songs like ‘Wraith’ and ‘Fatalist’ are must-haves in Half Me‘s discography, and we are delighted to discover them live.
The crowd begins to gather. Compared to Half Me, who still had some space on stage, Get The Shot find themselves cramped on the small front stage of the Splendid, so cramped that we don’t notice the third guitarist on the left until much later. Their set opens with an electro melody accompanied by a drum beat (unfortunately not live). Then Get The Shot hits us with a wall of riffs and heavy sounds, making Half Me seem like a mere warm-up. The pit is also well filled: it must be said that the band already has a reputation and an audience in Lille, even though former singer Jean-Philippe is no longer with them. This time, the band doesn’t need to ask for a circle pit to be started: the crowd does it on its own to the sound of heavy and powerful riffs. It’s also an opportunity for the band to showcase its guitarists with a few solos, allowing them to catch their breath before the rest of the set continues without any real break.
The band recently introduced their new singer, Matthieu Dhani, with a new single: ‘Torture Your Corpse’. When he was announced, the crowd already seemed to know him well and were more than excited to see him live. We enjoyed the band’s performance last November at the Black Lab with Jean-Philippe still on vocals. The venue was turned upside down, with the band playing in the audience, whereas here the atmosphere remains a little more subdued.
We notice that when the bassist speaks, it is to get closer to the audience and remind them of an important message: fuck Nazism, fuck fascism, and fuck toxicity. The Quebec band doesn’t fail to launch wall of death and circle pits, while a few crowdsurfers take advantage of the crowd gathered in front of the stage. Matthieu Dhani’s performance remains up to par: he doesn’t disappoint and proves that Get The Shot is ready for a new era. With the hardcore audience of the North being loyal to them, we shouldn’t have to wait too long to see them again around here!
There was a break in the evening to set up the stage for Rise Of The Northstar. We suddenly found ourselves immersed in a Japanese alleyway. From the electricity pylon to the drinks machine, via the iconic cherry tree with pink leaves, everything was meticulously planned to immerse us in the band’s world of manga and metal. As the lights dim, a hip-hop beat introduces their entrance on stage.
No introduction is needed for Rise Of The Northstar: the band played to a full house a year ago in this same venue, and once again, the audience is there, whistling and celebrating their arrival before the powerful launch of ‘Neo Paris’. They are set to release a brand new album on November 14th, but there are no surprises tonight: no new songs, just a succession of bangers covering their entire discography, with ‘Showdown’ from Showdown (2023), then ‘Welcame’ from Welcame (2014), which kicks off a circle pit from the very first notes.
Tonight is the first date of the tour, so what could be more logical for Rise Of The Northstar than to start in the North? And the audience did them proud. The sequence of ‘Here Comes the Boom’ and ‘One Love’ triggered even more movement in the crowd, who sang along to the lyrics of these iconic songs. As they begin a new song, the band is suddenly interrupted by the ringing of a telephone on stage: we then hear the deep voice symbolising the demon in The Legacy Of Shi say ‘I’m back’ with an evil laugh. The band then launches into ‘Raijin’ and ‘Kozo’. The sound of Rise Of The Northstar blends perfectly with the venue, mixing the energy of metal with more rap-like passages that lose none of their power. Well-rehearsed after all these years, the band doesn’t forget to have fun with the audience. The guitarist takes a moment to play a few melodies that are picked up by the crowd before launching into the riff of ‘Back 2 Basics’, released this summer featuring Flo from LANDMVRKS: two worlds that blend perfectly. Discovering this track live only requires Flo’s presence to complete the energy.
From that moment on, the band plays their latest singles, which paved the way for the album’s release, and the backdrop falls, revealing the new canvas: the cover of the upcoming album. After ‘A.I.R. Max’, the band follows up with ‘Rise’ for a moving return to their roots: cherry blossom petals fall from above the stage, making the moment even more immersive.
For the encore, a change of outfit is in order: a return to their roots, for real, with the outfits from the beginning of ROTNS. Vithia takes the opportunity to speak, pointing out that they don’t care about fashion: listening to ourselves and asserting ourselves according to our tastes is the only way to stand out and become unique. Then comes ‘What The Fuck’, before going even further back in their discography with ‘Demonstrating My Saiya Style’, taken from their first EP. To conclude, the singer asks if ‘Again and Again’ means anything to us: the audience cheers, the riffs start, and we’re off for the last song, the last moment of madness of the evening.
Leaving the venue, it’s hard not to feel the energy still vibrating in the air. Three bands, three approaches to metal, but one certainty: everyone gave it their all. And if this first date sets the tone for the tour, then it promises to be explosive.
