Originaire de Rennes, le groupe Ab-Natural s’impose une nouvelle fois dans la scène néo-metalcore française avec son nouvel EP CATABASE qui sortira le 14 novembre. Composé de six titres, ce projet s’annonce comme la première moitié d’un diptyque dont la suite, ANABASE, paraîtra en 2026. Inspiré de l’imagerie de la mythologie gréco-romaine, l’EP explore la notion de descente aux enfers à travers un ton sombre et profondément pessimiste.

On avait déjà évoqué Ab-Natural dans nos chroniques express à la sortie de Le Beau Monde, un premier album qui nous avait intrigués par son équilibre entre brutalité et envolées plus symphoniques. Avec Catabase, le groupe semble délaisser la douceur pour plonger dans une noirceur plus technique, plus viscérale, et surtout plus maîtrisée.
Dès “Phobos”, l’introduction donne le ton : une citation tirée de Fullmetal Alchemist plante un décor tragique et introspectif avant que les guitares n’explosent. Alternant entre français et anglais, le titre dénonce la dépression et l’absurdité de sa glorification. Le ton est cru, désabusé, mais lucide. Avec “Merchant of Misery”, seul morceau intégralement en anglais, Ab-Natural flirte avec le deathcore : entre passages ultra-violents et flow rappé sur fond de beat techno, le groupe s’en prend ici à l’impunité des puissants. Les émotions s’intensifient sur “Les eaux du Léthé”, qui navigue entre moments rappés et un chant clair prenant. Le contraste entre douceur et douleur y est saisissant : une montée progressive vers un cri viscéral sur le thème du suicide. Ce morceau dévoile une sensibilité dans le groupe qu’on n’avait qu’entrevue jusqu’ici. Puis vient “Invidia”, où l’on retrouve brièvement l’ancien duo vocal du groupe. Les influences s’élargissent : un phrasé rappelant la façon de délivrer les paroles qu’à Vithia de Rise Of The Northstar, une énergie brute, et des paroles sur la haine réciproque. “Vol 718” introduit une dimension plus expérimentale : les guitares se font encore plus techniques, flirtant avec un univers dystopique sous l’influence du roman Sa Majesté des Mouches. Le titre se conclut sur un beat techno surprenant mais parfaitement intégré, comme un écho moderne à la folie humaine qu’il dépeint. Enfin, “Catastrophe Imaginée” referme l’EP avec intensité. Les riffs complexes s’entrelacent à des textures électroniques, décrivant le chaos mental de celui qui s’invente des problèmes pour fuir la réalité.
Avec CATABASE, Ab-Natural signe un retour percutant et conceptuel. Là où Le Beau Monde laissait encore transparaître une part d’espoir, cette nouvelle œuvre s’enfonce dans les ténèbres avec une assurance déconcertante. Plus agressif, plus précis, mais aussi plus réfléchi, le groupe semble avoir trouvé son identité : un équilibre entre rage moderne, profondeur thématique et ambition musicale.

Hailing from Rennes, the band Ab-Natural is once again making its mark on the French neo-metalcore scene with its new EPCATABASE, due for release on November 14th. Comprising six tracks, this project is the first half of a diptych, the sequel to which,ANABASE, will be released in 2026. Inspired by imagery from Greco-Roman mythology, the EP explores the notion of descent into hell through a dark and deeply pessimistic tone.

We already mentioned Ab-Natural in our express reviews when Le Beau Monde was released, a debut album that intrigued us with its balance between brutality and more symphonic flights of fancy. With Catabase, the band seems to have abandoned gentleness in favour of a more technical, visceral and, above all, more controlled darkness.
Right from the start, “Phobos” sets the tone: a quote from Fullmetal Alchemist sets a tragic and introspective scene before the guitars explode. Alternating between French and English, the song denounces depression and the absurdity of its glorification. The tone is raw, disillusioned, but lucid. With ‘Merchant of Misery’, the only track entirely in English, Ab-Natural flirts with deathcore: between ultra-violent passages and rap flow against a techno beat, the band attacks the impunity of the powerful. Emotions intensify on ‘Les eaux du Léthé’, which navigates between rap moments and captivating clean vocals. The contrast between gentleness and pain is striking: a gradual build-up to a visceral cry on the theme of suicide. This track reveals a sensitivity in the band that we had only glimpsed until now. Then comes ‘Invidia’, where we briefly hear the band’s former vocal duo. The influences broaden: phrasing reminiscent of the way Vithia from Rise Of The Northstar delivers lyrics, raw energy, and lyrics about mutual hatred. « Vol 718 » introduces a more experimental dimension: the guitars become even more technical, flirting with a dystopian universe under the influence of the novel Lord of the Flies. The track concludes with a surprising but perfectly integrated techno beat, like a modern echo of the human madness it depicts. Finally, « Catastrophe Imaginée » closes the EP with intensity. Complex riffs intertwine with electronic textures, describing the mental chaos of someone who invents problems for themselves in order to escape reality.
With CATABASE, Ab-Natural makes a powerful and conceptual comeback. Where Le Beau Monde still revealed a glimmer of hope, this new work plunges into darkness with disconcerting confidence. More aggressive, more precise, but also more thoughtful, the band seems to have found its identity: a balance between modern rage, thematic depth and musical ambition.
