Deux ans depuis la sortie de Crimson Sky, les nordistes de Nothing For Free font leur grand retour ce 1er mai 2026 avec Sailing Among The Lost Souls, leur troisième album ! Un album dense qui sent bon le punk rock US, tout en vous embarquant à bord d’un bateau pirate, au départ de Valenciennes ! Promis ça a du sens !

Pour leur retour, Nothing For Free frappent fort avec pas moins de treize morceaux aussi énergiques qu’accrocheurs. Si vous ne connaissez pas encore le groupe, on pourrait facilement vous dire que certains titres évoquent The Offspring, notamment sur « Ode To Lazyness » ou encore Rise Against sur « Modern Pirates ». Mais ce serait bien trop réducteur. Certes, Nothing For Free pratiquent un punk rock aux sonorités très US, mais ils savent surtout y injecter une multitude d’idées et de nuances intéressantes.
Prenez « Dream Seller », par exemple : un morceau à l’approche nettement plus orchestrale, enrichi par une trompette qui apporte une vraie profondeur et une richesse supplémentaire. Avec « Duel Time », le groupe explore un terrain folk aux accents western, installant une ambiance tendue avant de lâcher un affrontement rock’n’roll des plus explosifs, le tout conclu par un clin d’œil savoureux à Retour Vers Le Futur 3
L’album reste cependant profondément ancré dans un punk rock aux relents skate punk, comme en témoigne « Friends », et n’hésite jamais à accélérer le tempo quand il le faut. « Rebel Frequencies » en est le parfait exemple, porté par une section rythmique qui propulse littéralement le morceau. C’est le genre de titres taillés pour déclencher des pogos en concert et faire mouche à chaque écoute. Sur « Big Guy », le plaisir de jeu est palpable, notamment dans les parties de guitare et de basse : inutile de voir le groupe sur scène, leur énergie transpire directement de leurs instruments. La conclusion de l’album se fait avec « Balade et Mots », une véritable balade emo, comme le nom l’indique et comme on les aime, mêlant atmosphères aériennes et screams puissants, pour une fin tout en intensité et en émotion.
Impossible de ne pas avoir envie de partir à l’aventure avec ce quintet, que ce soit à bord d’un navire pirate ou au cœur d’une fête débridée entre amis. Nothing For Free ne déçoivent jamais, et on ne peut que leur souhaiter de continuer sur cette superbe lancée au sein de la scène punk rock. On a déjà hâte de les retrouver en live, sans aucun doute pour passer un moment mémorable. D’ailleurs, les paroles sont déjà en cours d’apprentissage !

Two years on from the release of Crimson Sky, the Valenciennes-based band Nothing For Free are making a big comeback on May 1st 2026 with Sailing Among The Lost Souls, their third album! A rich, dense album with a distinct US punk rock vibe, taking you on a journey aboard a pirate ship setting sail from Valenciennes! Trust us, it all makes sense!
For their comeback, Nothing For Free have made a big splash with no fewer than thirteen tracks that are as energetic as they are catchy. If you’re not yet familiar with the band, it would be easy to say that certain tracks bring to mind The Offspring – particularly on “Ode To Lazyness” – or Rise Against on “Modern Pirates”. But that would be far too simplistic. Admittedly, Nothing For Free play punk rock with a distinctly American sound, but above all they know how to inject it with a wealth of interesting ideas and nuances.
Take “Dream Seller”, for example: a track with a distinctly more orchestral approach, enriched by a trumpet that adds real depth and extra richness. With “Duel Time”, the band explores folk territory with Western accents, building a tense atmosphere before unleashing a highly explosive rock ’n’ roll showdown, all rounded off with a delightful nod to Back to the Future 3.
The album remains, however, deeply rooted in punk rock with hints of skate punk, as evidenced by ‘Friends’, and never hesitates to pick up the pace when needed. “Rebel Frequencies” is the perfect example, driven by a rhythm section that literally propels the track forward. It’s the sort of track tailor-made to spark mosh pits at gigs and hit the mark every time you listen. On “Big Guy”, the sheer joy of playing is palpable, particularly in the guitar and bass parts: there’s no need to see the band on stage; their energy radiates directly from their instruments. The album concludes with “Balade et Mots”, a true emo ballad, as the name suggests and just the way we like them, blending ethereal atmospheres with powerful screams for a finale brimming with intensity and emotion.
It’s impossible not to want to set off on an adventure with this quintet, whether aboard a pirate ship or in the midst of a wild party with friends. Nothing For Free never disappoint, and we can only hope they continue this superb run within the punk rock scene. We’re already looking forward to seeing them live, no doubt for a memorable experience. In fact, we’re already learning the lyrics!
