Le 8 mai, le groupe de métal finlandais Torchia franchit une nouvelle étape dans sa carrière avec la sortie de son quatrième album nommé They Are Born Under Rules of the Darkness via le label Rockshots Records. Produit par Janne Saksa et masterisé par le renommé Dan Swanö, cet opus marque une évolution profonde vers un univers plus sombre et cinématographique.

Depuis ses premières années forgées dans un death metal mélodique imprégné de thrash, la formation finlandaise, originaire de Tampere et formée en 2010, n’a cessé de s’orienter vers un terrain de plus en plus obscur tout en étoffant son monde fantastique maudit peuplé de divinités anciennes, de pratiques occultes et visions mythologiques lugubres. Toutefois, la volonté du groupe avec They Are Born Under Rules of the Darkness est que le simple melodeath laisse la place à une approche bien plus cinématographique et théâtrale avec des teintes « blackened ». Ce nouveau disque nous plonge d’ailleurs dans une vision particulièrement lugubre et poisseuse du XIXe siècle qui atteint son paroxysme avec “The Tiamat Machine”, titre évoquant les ruelles brumeuses de Whitechapel et l’ombre menaçante d’un certain « tueur de Whitechapel »…
Musicalement parlant, Torchia ne fait pas dans la dentelle et propose neuf chansons agressives mais équilibrées, ne laissant aucun répit à l’auditeur. Dès le frénétique “Nekromanteion”, l’impérial growl de Nox se fait entendre couplé aux riffs épiques proposés par Ville « Villemorte » Riitamaa (lead guitare / voix) et Henri von Hardy (guitare). La descente vertigineuse vers l’Enfer se poursuit avec l’implacable “Hellmouth”. Au cours de ce titre, Torchia nous offre une évolution sonore inédite avec l’introduction de lignes de chant clair par le lead guitariste dans une volonté d’augmenter d’un cran la dimension dramatique du morceau. De son côté, le chanteur masqué Nox, véritable incarnation de la malédiction au cœur même de l’identité du groupe, continue de cracher ses lignes avec fureur tout du long de cet album. Une fureur que l’on retrouve également avec des riffs diablement groovys comme sur l’excellent “Into Hell” (à l’instar de “Black Cat”), signant sans conteste l’un des titres les plus efficaces de l’œuvre. Et que dire du faussement romantique “Die Amour” qui laisse plutôt place à une mélodie puissante et ravageuse.
Torchia n’oublie pas non plus ses racines puisque l’influence du heavy et power metal ressurgit à travers des mélodies héroïques et des duels de guitares à foison propres à ces styles. C’est tout bonnement flagrant sur “Stygian Waters”, une chanson particulièrement épique dépeignant la lutte désespérée d’un équipage face à un océan déchaîné et des forces surnaturelles.
Les portes du monde des morts se referment avec le vampirique “Sanguine Masquerade” où les doigts en feu de Ville délivrent une prestation de haute volée, accompagné d’une section rythmique tout aussi qualitative grâce notamment à Vulkan (basse / chœurs) et Vincent Oscar Mill (batterie).
En une quarantaine de minutes, They Are Born Under Rules of the Darkness s’impose comme un tour de force de la part de Torchia qui réussit ici le pari d’assombrir son propos tout en livrant des compositions plus accrocheuses et grandioses que par le passé. Cette atmosphère est d’ailleurs superbement retranscrite à travers la pochette du disque signée par l’artiste Caelan Stokkermans. De plus, la plume de Ville Riitamaa (épaulé à l’occasion par Nina-Maria Ahola et Eetu Hentunen), la production de Janne Saksa et le mastering du renommé Dan Swanö y sont indéniablement pour beaucoup dans cet album qui a définitivement tout pour convaincre les fans de Behemoth, Cradle of Filth ou encore Children of Bodom.

On May 8th, Finnish metal band Torchia reached a new milestone in their career with the release of their fourth album, They Are Born Under Rules of the Darkness, via Rockshots Records. Produced by Janne Saksa and mastered by the renowned Dan Swanö, this album marks a significant shift towards a darker, more cinematic sound.
Since its early years, shaped by a style of melodic death metal infused with thrash, the Finnish band, originally from Tampere and formed in 2010, has steadily moved towards increasingly darker territory, whilst expanding its cursed fantasy world populated by ancient deities, occult practices and gloomy mythological visions. However, with They Are Born Under Rules of the Darkness, the band’s intention is for simple melodic death metal to give way to a far more cinematic and theatrical approach with ‘blackened’ undertones. This new album plunges us into a particularly gloomy and oppressive vision of the 19th century, reaching its climax with “The Tiamat Machine”, a track evoking the misty alleyways of Whitechapel and the menacing shadow of a certain “Whitechapel Ripper”…
Musically speaking, Torchia pulls no punches, delivering nine aggressive yet well-balanced tracks that give the listener no respite. Right from the frenetic “Nekromanteion”, Nox’s imperial growl makes itself heard, coupled with the epic riffs provided by Ville “Villemorte” Riitamaa (lead guitar / vocals) and Henri von Hardy (guitar). The dizzying descent into Hell continues with the relentless “Hellmouth”. During this track, Torchia offers us a novel sonic evolution with the introduction of clean vocal lines by the lead guitarist, in a bid to ramp up the track’s dramatic intensity. For his part, the masked vocalist Nox, the very embodiment of the curse at the very heart of the band’s identity, continues to spit out his lines with fury throughout the album. A fury that is also evident in devilishly groovy riffs, as on the excellent “Into Hell” (much like “Black Cat”), undoubtedly one of the album’s most effective tracks. And what of the deceptively romantic “Die Amour”, which instead gives way to a powerful and devastating melody.
Torchia hasn’t forgotten its roots either, as the influence of heavy and power metal resurfaces through the heroic melodies and abundant guitar duels characteristic of these genres. This is particularly evident on “Stygian Waters”, a truly epic track depicting a crew’s desperate struggle against a raging ocean and supernatural forces.
The gates of the underworld slam shut with the vampiric “Sanguine Masquerade”, where Ville’s fiery fingers deliver a top-class performance, backed by a rhythm section of equally high calibre, thanks in particular to Vulkan (bass / backing vocals) and Vincent Oscar Mill (drums).
In around forty minutes, They Are Born Under Rules of the Darkness stands as a tour de force from Torchia, who here succeeds in darkening his narrative whilst delivering compositions that are more catchy and grandiose than in the past. This atmosphere is superbly captured in the album artwork by artist Caelan Stokkermans. Furthermore, the songwriting of Ville Riitamaa (occasionally supported by Nina-Maria Ahola and Eetu Hentunen), the production by Janne Saksa and the mastering by the renowned Dan Swanö undeniably play a major part in this album, which certainly has everything it takes to win over fans of Behemoth, Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom.
