Il y a quelque chose dans la vie sur la route qui transforme un groupe, et avec One Of Us, Self Deception s’y adonne pleinement. Désormais signé chez Napalm Records pour la première fois, le groupe suédois canalise l’énergie de ses tournées dans son septième album studio. Celui-ci sortira le 15 mai et s’articule autour des thèmes de la connexion, de l’exclusion et du besoin d’appartenance. Comme ils l’expliquent : « Tourner autant nous a plongés dans une sorte de “bulle live”, et ce sentiment imprègne l’écriture des chansons. » Ce sentiment de faire partie de quelque chose de plus grand est au cœur de l’album, le transformant en bien plus qu’une simple collection de chansons : on a l’impression d’un appel au rassemblement.

Dès les premières secondes de « ONE OF US », le ton est donné. Une courte intro cyberpunk laisse rapidement place à des guitares vibrantes et à l’énergie explosive caractéristique du groupe. C’est entraînant, immédiat, et conçu pour être repris en chœur par la foule, avec cette question mobilisatrice, « Are you one of us ? », qui transforme le morceau en véritable hymne. Écrite sur la route et inspirée par le chaos de la fosse, le groupe la décrit comme « une chanson sur les fans, pour les fans… plus une famille qu’une foule ». Et c’est vraiment ce qu’on ressent. L’album continue sur sa lancée avec « TIME’S UP », qui adopte d’abord une approche légèrement plus douce et plus sobre. L’intensité monte progressivement, avec un break électro qui ajoute de la texture avant de déboucher sur un refrain qui reste facilement en tête. « WAKE UP » s’enchaîne naturellement, portant ce même élan, comme une suite, une poussée en avant, un rappel de bouger, de réagir, de ne pas rester figé face à ce qui se passe autour de nous.
L’ambiance prend une tournure plus émouvante avec « DON’T B E L O N G ». Ici, le groupe aborde des thèmes plus sombres, évoquant la dépendance et la santé mentale. C’est le genre de morceau qui touche différemment, où des mélodies envoûtantes se marient à une section rythmique puissante, et où le chant revêt une réelle intensité. On le ressent : c’est le moment où l’album s’ouvre émotionnellement, où l’on a juste envie de tout laisser sortir avec eux. Cela n’empêche toutefois pas le groupe de revenir aussitôt à un côté plus ludique et énergique. « DEATH OF ME » donne presque l’impression d’une fête, avec des influences électro marquées qui pourraient faire écho à leur période en tournée, notamment avec Electric Callboy, tandis que « BREAK! » va encore plus loin. Une batterie puissante, des guitares glitch, des nappes électroniques, tout se fond dans un morceau qui ne laisse pas rester immobile. Le breakdown monte en puissance, explose, puis revient, ce qui en fait l’un des moments les plus dynamiques de l’album.
Vient ensuite « THE WEDDING », sans doute l’un des morceaux les plus surprenants de l’album. Écrit la nuit même du mariage de leur batteur, il transforme une célébration réelle en quelque chose de bien plus sombre : une histoire dystopique mettant en scène un couple qui souhaite secrètement s’entre-tuer. Le contraste est saisissant : la mélodie semble presque enjouée, tandis que l’histoire qui se cache derrière est tordue et cinématographique, ajoutant une nouvelle dimension à la narration de l’album. « KETAMINE COWBOY » ramène une ambiance entraînante, presque hypnotique, jouant avec des structures de berceuse tout en y injectant l’énergie du metal moderne. Il y a aussi une touche satirique dans la façon dont le morceau porte un regard sur la société et la richesse. « BLAME » suit avec une énergie plus militante, presque comme une marche vers la bataille, avec des éléments électro menant à un refrain fait pour être partagé, crié et vécu ensemble. Vers la fin, « ENTERTAINED » se distingue par l’un des breakdowns les plus puissants de l’album. Il commence presque de rien, s’intensifiant lentement jusqu’à ce que tout s’écroule. C’est intense, puissant et parfaitement placé dans la tracklist. Enfin, « GODDAMN ME » clôt l’album sur une note épique, réunissant tout ce qui définit Self Deception : des refrains accrocheurs, des chœurs massifs, des riffs tranchants et des breakdowns qui tombent à pic.
One Of Us se nourrit de cet équilibre constant entre énergie et émotion, entre le besoin d’appartenance et le sentiment d’exclusion. From the very first seconds of “ONE OF US”, the tone is set. A short cyberpunk intro quickly gives way to trembling guitars and the band’s signature explosive energy. It’s catchy, immediate, and built to be screamed back in a crowd, with that rallying question, “Are you one of us?”, turning the track into a true anthem. Written on the road and inspired by the chaos of the pit, the band describes it as “about the fans, for the fans… more like a family than a crowd.” And it really feels like it. The record keeps moving with “TIME’S UP”, which takes a slightly softer and more restrained approach at first. The intensity builds progressively, with an electro break adding texture before opening into a chorus that easily sticks. “WAKE UP” follows naturally, carrying that same momentum, like a continuation, a push forward, a reminder to move, to react, to not stay still to what is happening around us.
Things take a more emotional turn with “DON’T B E L O N G”. Here, the band leans into heavier themes, touching on addiction and mental health. It’s the kind of track that hits differently, where haunting melodies meet a strong rhythm section, and where the vocals carry a real weight. You can feel it, it’s the moment where the album opens up emotionally, where you just want to let it all out with them. However that doesn’t stop the band from bringing back a more playful, high-energy side right after. “DEATH OF ME” feels almost like a party, with noticeable electro influences that could echo their time on tour, namely with Electric Callboy, while “BREAK!” pushes even further. Heavy drums, glitchy guitars, electronic layers, everything blends into a track that’s impossible to stand still to. The breakdown builds, explodes, and then comes back again, making it one of the most dynamic moments on the record.
Then comes “THE WEDDING”, probably one of the most surprising tracks here. Written the same night their drummer got married, it flips a real-life celebration into something much darker: a dystopian story about a couple secretly wanting to kill each other. The contrast is striking, the melody feels almost uplifting, while the story behind it is twisted and cinematic, adding another layer to the album’s storytelling. “KETAMINE COWBOY” brings back a catchy, almost hypnotic vibe, playing with lullaby-like structures but injecting them with modern metal energy. There’s also a satirical edge in how it looks at society and wealth. “BLAME” follows with a more militant energy, almost like a march into battle, with electro elements leading into a chorus made to be shared, shouted, and lived together. Near the end, “ENTERTAINED” stands out with one of the heaviest breakdowns on the album. It starts almost from nothing, slowly building until everything crashes in. It’s intense, powerful, and perfectly placed in the tracklist. Finally, “GODDAMN ME” closes the record on an epic note, bringing together everything that defines Self Deception: catchy hooks, massive choruses, sharp riffs, and breakdowns that hit just right.
One Of Us thrives on that constant balance between energy and emotion, between the need to belong and the feeling of being left out.
