Depuis de nombreuses années les suédois de Port Noir nous offrent un prog rock très moderne évoluant au fil des albums vers une musique clairement taillée pour la scène et pour conquérir un large public, tout en gardant cette identité forte qui est la leur. Le 15 mai le groupe sortira via Inside Out Music son cinquième album studio intitulé The Dark We Keep. Onze nouveaux morceaux du trio pour replonger avec eux dans cet univers musical riche qu’ils ont su créer.

Dès « Complicated » on trouve ce qui a toujours fait la force de Port Noir, à savoir un son puissant et mélodique à souhait qui vient captiver l’auditeur dès les premiers instants. Leur prog rock est moderne en diable mais ne laisse en rien de côté la technicité des morceaux. La voix de Love Andersson, également guitariste et bassiste sur cet album vient nous percuter sur « Redshift » et nous émouvoir par sa puissance et sa clarté, qui est bien représentée par le halo blanc sur la pochette du disque. Côté guitares on retrouve aussi Andreas Hollstrand qui accompagne Love pour un son toujours plus travaillé et sublimé par son jeu de claviers sur plusieurs des titres de l’album. Tout comme pour la guitare, il rejoint également Love au chant pour des duos vocaux à vous coller des frissons en quelques secondes. Le single « Ebb And Flow » ou encore « My Destroyer » laissent à AW Wiberg à la batterie l’occasion de nous montrer toute sa versatilité. On retrouve dans ce nouveau disque de Port Noir une émotion forte dans chaque titre. Les trois musiciens excellent et font de chaque composition une aventure progressive forte. « Vargtimmen » ou encore « Reverie » nous laissent pantois d’admiration et nous confirment que le groupe sait alterner entre évolutions sonores constantes et sons presque pop qui sauraient ravir un public très large. « This View’ nous en remet une couche tout comme le titre de clôture « We Shall Die Together » qui laisse aux trois musiciens une dernière occasion de nous émerveiller avec des riffs percutants, des claviers aériens, une batterie toujours plus enthousiasmante et des voix émouvantes à souhait. Jusqu’à la note finale on ne peut décrocher de ce disque et on en ressort conquis une fois de plus par le travail du trio suédois.
Avec The Dark We Keep, Port Noir cimentent leur place dans la scène prog rock avec un album qui saura tout autant satisfaire les amateurs de morceaux travaillés et techniques que ceux plus enclins à écouter des titres taillés pour la scène et pour être repris en chœur. C’est là la grande force du groupe et ce disque est une superbe pierre de plus au superbe édifice construit par la formation au fil des années. On espère les voir de retour sur scène très vite et on vous encourage à foncer écouter ce disque.

For many years now, the Swedish band Port Noir have been treating us to a very modern brand of prog rock, evolving with each album towards a sound clearly tailored for the live stage and designed to win over a wide audience, whilst retaining their distinctive identity. On 15 May, the band will release their fifth studio album, The Dark We Keep, via Inside Out Music. With eleven new tracks, the trio invite us to immerse ourselves once again in the rich musical world they have created.
Right from ‘Complicated’, we find what has always been Port Noir’s strength: a powerful, perfectly melodic sound that captivates the listener from the very first moments. Their prog rock is incredibly modern, yet in no way compromises on the technicality of the tracks. The voice of Love Andersson, who also plays guitar and bass on this album, hits us hard on “Redshift” and moves us with its power and clarity, which is well represented by the white halo on the album cover. On guitar, we also find Andreas Hollstrand, who accompanies Love to create a sound that is ever more refined and enhanced by his keyboard playing on several of the album’s tracks. Just as with the guitar, he also joins Love on vocals for duets that send shivers down your spine in a matter of seconds. The singles ‘Ebb And Flow’ and ‘My Destroyer’ give AW Wiberg on drums the chance to showcase his versatility. This new Port Noir album delivers a powerful emotional impact in every track. The three musicians excel, turning each composition into a compelling progressive adventure. ‘Vargtimmen’ and “Reverie” leave us speechless with admiration and confirm that the band knows how to alternate between constant sonic evolution and almost pop-like sounds that are sure to delight a very wide audience. ‘This View’ really hits the mark, as does the closing track ‘We Shall Die Together’, which gives the three musicians one last chance to dazzle us with powerful riffs, ethereal keyboards, ever-more-thrilling drums and deeply moving vocals. Right up to the final note, you simply can’t tear yourself away from this record, and you come away once again won over by the Swedish trio’s work.
With The Dark We Keep, Port Noir cement their place on the prog rock scene with an album that will satisfy fans of intricate, technical tracks just as much as those more inclined to listen to songs tailored for the stage and for singing along to. This is the band’s great strength, and this album is yet another superb stone in the magnificent edifice the band has constructed over the years. We hope to see them back on stage very soon, and we encourage you to go and listen to this album.
