Derrière ce nom énigmatique, on retrouve notamment JB Le Bail (Igorrr, ex-Svart Crown) et Rémi Serafino (Igorrr). Mais loin d’un simple projet parallèle, le groupe propose ici une identité forte : un rock à la fois lourd, hypnotique, mélodique et profondément sombre.

Avec ce premier EP, Messalina trace les contours d’un univers à la croisée d’un rock lourd, hypnotique et mélodique, constamment tiré vers quelque chose de plus sombre, de plus introspectif. Une musique qui ne cherche pas forcément l’impact immédiat, mais plutôt l’emprise progressive. « Golden Wounds » ouvre le bal avec une introduction légèrement inquiétante, presque suspendue. On navigue entre rock industriel et doom, dans une attente palpable. Puis le morceau se déploie, et ce refrain… presque inattendu. Une sensibilité qui évoque subtilement Deftones, avec ce mélange de tension et de mélodie qui accroche sans jamais s’éclaircir totalement. « No Color » marque un tournant. Le featuring avec Tim De Gieter (Doodseskader, ex-Amenra) agit comme une évidence. Musicalement, le morceau flirte avec un rock teinté de shoegaze mais privé de lumière, volontairement étouffé. La guitare enveloppe sans libérer, tandis que les passages portés par Doodseskader injectent une identité plus sombre, presque suffocante, avec une rythmique légèrement trap. Un featuring où Tim De Gieter vient clairement injecté sur Doodseskader pur et dur dans la composition. Le final screamé vient sceller cette montée en tension. Le thème est frontal : cet état dépressif où tout devient gris, où plus rien n’atteint vraiment.
« Cold As Before » ralentit le tempo mais renforce l’emprise. Hypnotique, minimaliste, le titre s’imprime facilement dans l’esprit. C’est probablement le morceau le plus accessible de l’EP, tout en conservant cette noirceur diffuse qui caractérise le projet. Sur « Narrow Chase », en featuring avec Kabbel, Messalina explorent une dimension plus hybride. Le lien entre rock et électronique devient ici plus marqué, évoquant des productions à la croisée de HEALTH, pas étonnant quand on sait que l’EP a été masterisé par Thibault Chaumont au Deviant Lab, qu’on retrouve derrière le mastering de Health, ou encore Carpenter Brut. Une variation intéressante qui enrichit l’EP sans le dénaturer.
« A Cross » s’enfonce dans une dimension plus symbolique. Le morceau interroge la figure du martyr et les limites du sacrifice de soi. C’est une piste introspective, presque contemplative, qui prolonge le thème des cicatrices et de leur acceptation. Enfin, « Born Again », en featuring avec Dool clôture l’EP avec élégance. Les percussions imposent une ambiance pesante, tandis que l’harmonie des voix fonctionne à merveille. La présence vocale de Ryanne Van Dorst apporte une intensité émotionnelle supplémentaire, presque mystique. Nous étions déjà fan de Dool, alors cette alliance est un sans faute.
Messalina nous proposent avec Golden Wounds un EP riche et cohérence dans son atmosphère. Ils installent une tension subtile, une lourdeur émotionnelle qui agit en profondeur, mais surtout impressionnent par sa maturité. Messalina pose d’emblée une identité forte, entre rock hypnotique, textures industrielles et introspection. Une belle découverte, qu’on vous recommande chaudement !

A new project hailing from the Baie des Anges, Messalina is making a striking debut with Golden Wounds, a debut EP due out on May 22nd, 2026 via Novo Lux Productions. Behind this enigmatic name are JB Le Bail (Igorrr, ex-Svart Crown) and Rémi Serafino (Igorrr). But far from being a mere side project, the band presents a strong identity here: a style of rock that is heavy, hypnotic, melodic and deeply dark.
With this debut EP, Messalina sketches out a world at the crossroads of heavy, hypnotic and melodic rock, constantly drawn towards something darker, more introspective. Music that doesn’t necessarily seek immediate impact, but rather a gradual hold. ‘Golden Wounds’ kicks things off with a slightly unsettling, almost suspended introduction. We navigate between industrial rock and doom, in a palpable state of anticipation. Then the track unfolds, and that chorus… almost unexpected. A sensibility that subtly evokes Deftones, with that blend of tension and melody that hooks you without ever fully clearing up. ‘No Color’ marks a turning point. The collaboration with Tim De Gieter (Doodseskader, ex-Amenra) feels like a natural fit. Musically, the track flirts with a shoegaze-tinged rock but one devoid of light, deliberately stifled. The guitar envelops without letting go, whilst the sections driven by Doodseskader inject a darker, almost suffocating atmosphere, with a slightly trap-inspired rhythm. A collaboration where Tim De Gieter’s influence is clearly injected into the composition, which is pure, unadulterated Doodseskader. The screamed finale seals this build-up of tension. The theme is stark: that depressive state where everything turns grey, where nothing really touches you anymore.
‘Cold As Before’ slows the tempo but tightens its grip. Hypnotic and minimalist, the track sticks easily in the mind. It is probably the most accessible track on the EP, whilst retaining that diffuse darkness that characterises the project. On ‘Narrow Chase’, featuring Kabbel, Messalina explore a more hybrid dimension. The link between rock and electronica becomes more pronounced here, evoking productions at the crossroads of HEALTH – hardly surprising given that the EP was mastered by Thibault Chaumont at Deviant Lab, the man behind the mastering for HEALTH and Carpenter Brut. An interesting variation that enriches the EP without distorting it.
‘A Cross’ delves into a more symbolic dimension. The track examines the figure of the martyr and the limits of self-sacrifice. It is an introspective, almost contemplative track that extends the theme of scars and their acceptance. Finally, ‘Born Again’, featuring Dool, brings the EP to a stylish close. The percussion creates a heavy atmosphere, whilst the vocal harmonies work a treat. Ryanne Van Dorst’s vocal presence adds an extra layer of emotional intensity, almost mystical in nature. We were already fans of Dool, so this collaboration is a real winner.
With Golden Wounds, Messalina deliver an EP that is rich and consistent in its atmosphere. They create a subtle tension, an emotional weight that resonates deeply, but above all impress with their maturity. Messalina immediately establish a strong identity, blending hypnotic rock, industrial textures and introspection. A wonderful discovery, which we highly recommend!
