Après douze années d’activité, c’est avec une certaine sérénité que les Allemands du groupe de death metal Endseeker tirent leur révérence. Pour l’occasion, le quintet nous fait le plaisir de clore son chapitre discographique ce 19 juin avec l’EP Coffin Born via Metal Blade Records. Cette ultime sortie fait directement écho à leurs débuts, lorsque le combo avait publié son tout premier format court en 2015. L’occasion idéale pour eux de dévoiler tout le savoir-faire acquis durant ces années.

Fin avril 2026, la formation hambourgeoise, toujours constituée de son line-up historique avec Lenny Osterhus (chant), Ben Liepelt (guitare), Jury Kowalczyk (guitare), Torsten Eggert (basse) et André Kummer (batterie), annonçait son retrait de la scène après plus d’une décennie à créer de la musique. Douze années de travail, d’amitié et bien sûr de death metal, pour le plus grand bonheur des fans. Toutefois, l’annonce de ce retrait avait de quoi surprendre le public au vu de la forme éclatante du groupe. Pris dans un rythme soutenu d’une sortie tous les deux ans et par peur de s’enliser dans la répétition ou de livrer des compositions bâclées, le quintet a consciencieusement choisi de privilégier la qualité à la quantité afin d’achever son parcours au sommet de son art tout en conservant cette « bromance » forgée sur la route. Quoi de mieux donc que de terminer l’aventure comme elle avait commencé, avec un EP de cinq titres dont la pochette, toujours aussi morbide, n’en est pas moins (allègrement) explicite.
L’assaut est donné avec “Enemies of Peace”, un titre d’ouverture extrêmement lourd puisant dans les racines hardcore et crust punk antifascistes, qui sublime un propos éminemment politique contre la montée du fascisme dans notre société. Coffin Born se poursuit avec le frénétique “No After. No Before”, annoncé comme le morceau le plus rapide jamais composé par la formation. Intrépide dès les premières secondes, il maintient un rythme effréné porté par l’immense voix grave de Lenny, mettant cette fois-ci en lumière les systèmes politiques défaillants.
Introduit par des sirènes de police hurlantes, le morceau éponyme “Coffin Born” délaisse un instant la politique pour se concentrer sur l’image macabre de cadavres donnant la vie, faisant vibrer les tympans de l’auditeur avec un riff groovy poisseux et de multiples variations vocales. Vient ensuite “Life Breeds Death”, qui démarre les hostilités par un énorme blast. Ce morceau épique, le plus long de cet EP, concentre tout le savoir-faire du groupe. Mettant en scène un bourreau médiéval, le titre brille notamment par son énorme section rythmique, mise en lumière par des séquences instrumentales et portée par des musiciens particulièrement inspirés. Quel travail de Ben, Jury, Torsten et André !
L’EP se clôture sur l’OVNI “True Survivor”, la fameuse reprise du titre de David Hasselhoff tiré de la bande originale du film Kung Fury. Rejoint par son compatriote de Hambourg Chris Harms, chanteur de Lord of the Lost, le quintet allemand nous offre une version metal inattendue et accrocheuse, forcément plus accessible que les précédentes compositions de l’œuvre. Fidèle à son habitude d’inclure régulièrement une cover dans ses disques, Endseeker fait ici le choix de faire un beau pied de nez aux puristes en s’attaquant à une chanson de synth-pop !
Si l’expérience est aussi courte qu’intense, Coffin Born permet au groupe de faire ses adieux en scellant son héritage comme il se doit. Quand bien même le coup de sifflet final de cette aventure résonnera une dernière fois lors d’un concert le 12 décembre 2026 à Hambourg, leur musique continuera quant à elle de faire trembler les murs. Et soyez rassurés, certains membres de la formation ont bien l’intention de continuer de créer et reviendront certainement sur les planches sous peu !

After twelve years in the business, the German death metal band Endseeker are bowing out with a sense of calm. To mark the occasion, the quintet are delighted to bring their recording career to a close on June 19th with the EP Coffin Born, released via Metal Blade Records. This final release directly echoes their early days, when the band released their very first EP in 2015. It is the perfect opportunity for them to showcase all the expertise they have acquired over the years.
In late April 2026, the Hamburg-based band, still comprising its original line-up of Lenny Osterhus (vocals), Ben Liepelt (guitar), Jury Kowalczyk (guitar), Torsten Eggert (bass) and André Kummer (drums), announced their retirement from the stage after more than a decade of making music. Twelve years of hard work, friendship and, of course, death metal, much to the delight of their fans. However, the announcement of their retirement came as something of a surprise to the public, given the band’s outstanding form. Caught up in a steady rhythm of releasing an album every two years, and fearing they might become bogged down in repetition or deliver slapdash compositions, the quintet conscientiously chose to prioritise quality over quantity in order to bring their journey to a close at the height of their artistry, whilst preserving the ‘bromance’ forged on the road. What better way, then, to end the adventure than as it began, with a five-track EP whose cover art, as morbid as ever, is nonetheless (blithely) explicit.
The album kicks off with “Enemies of Peace”, an extremely heavy opening track drawing on the roots of anti-fascist hardcore and crust punk, which powerfully conveys a highly political message against the rise of fascism in our society. *Coffin Born* continues with the frenetic “No After. No Before”, billed as the fastest track the band has ever written. Intrepid from the very first seconds, it maintains a breakneck pace driven by Lenny’s immense, deep voice, this time shining a light on failing political systems.
Introduced by wailing police sirens, the title track “Coffin Born” briefly sets politics aside to focus on the macabre image of corpses giving life, making the listener’s eardrums vibrate with a sticky, groovy riff and a multitude of vocal variations. Next comes “Life Breeds Death”, which kicks off the action with a massive blast beat. This epic track, the longest on the EP, showcases the band’s full range of skills. Featuring a medieval executioner, the track particularly shines thanks to its massive rhythm section, highlighted by instrumental passages and driven by exceptionally inspired musicians. What a performance from Ben, Jury, Torsten and André!
The EP rounds off with the unexpected track “True Survivor”, the famous cover of David Hasselhoff’s song from the soundtrack to the film Kung Fury. Joined by his fellow Hamburg native Chris Harms, lead singer of Lord of the Lost, the German quintet treats us to an unexpected and catchy metal version, which is inevitably more accessible than the previous tracks on the album. True to their habit of regularly including a cover on their records, Endseeker have chosen here to give purists a proper snub by tackling a synth-pop song!
Whilst the experience is as brief as it is intense, Coffin Born allows the band to bid farewell whilst cementing their legacy in style. Even though the final whistle on this adventure will sound one last time at a concert on December 12th 2026 in Hamburg, their music will continue to make the walls shake. And rest assured, some members of the band fully intend to keep creating and will certainly be back on stage before long!
