The Devil And The Almighty Blues.

Review and pictures by Victor Brunerie

The evening kicks off in a packed venue with Skyjoggers and their wildly psychedelic space rock. The trio from Tampere electrify the crowd in a matter of moments with a thoroughly danceable sound that simultaneously transports us to another world. The riffs are furious and the rhythms frenzied. The three musicians give it their all, not hesitating for a second to let loose on stage themselves. The audience is ecstatic and gives the band a huge round of applause, making this start to the evening at La Bulle an unforgettable moment. We’re taken on a journey through the band’s already extensive discography, and every track makes us want to delve into it with even greater attention. It’s hard to take your eyes off Alexi Belle (guitar), Juan Rico (bass) and Gabo Sabor (drums), as they bring their songs to life like no one else. Their set flies by far too quickly, and when the final track is announced, you find yourself wishing there’d been a bit more. But we savour the final notes like a real musical treat, our minds drifting far off into space, carried away by these notes masterfully played by musicians in top form. The band leaves the stage to thunderous applause from a captivated audience. We have no doubt whatsoever that they’ll be keen to put Lille on the map of cities to revisit on a future headlining tour, given what a warm welcome they received tonight! We strongly encourage you to go and discover Skyjoggers as soon as possible, and as for us, we’re off to listen to their albums!

Now it’s the turn of The Devil And The Almighty Blues, straight from Norway, to cast their spell over us. Here, space is no more; we’re heading off to the depths of the blues for a total rock experience. The notes played by Torgeir Waldemar Engen and Petter Svee on guitars are breathtakingly beautiful and, in the space of a few moments, plunge us into a unique musical universe, one we’re discovering for the first time tonight. On the rhythm side, Kim Skaug on bass is literally possessed throughout the set and, together with Kenneth Simonsen on drums, forms a duo that leaves no one unmoved. Finally, Arnt O. Andersen takes to the stage; clad in his robe and bracelets, he reminds us of a shaman who has come to cast a spell over us. And that’s exactly what he does, with vocals that are as captivating as can be, switching effortlessly between the raw emotion of the blues and more rock-infused passages that really get under your skin. Yet the singer doesn’t hesitate to step back into the shadows from time to time to let the musicians shine. And even though the atmosphere in La Bulle is sombre, we can assure you that they all shine with their immense talent. We delve into the band’s discography and discover real gems that make us wonder why we didn’t dive into the world of The Devil And The Almighty Blues sooner. The audience is in seventh heaven, revelling in the concert in a silence that allows them to savour these masterful tracks from start to finish. The emotional power of the Norwegians’ performance is overwhelming, and every part sung by Arnt sends shivers down our spines, such is the way he commands the stage with his voice and presence. The set is unstoppable from start to finish, and when it comes to an end, you realise that every note played tonight has been a delight, and that you wouldn’t hesitate for a second to go and see the band again the next time they’re in town. And just as with Skyjoggers before them, given the reception they’ve received from the Lille audience tonight, there’s not a doubt in our minds that they’ll be back.
